  • I was asked to make a glow tumbler using glow powder, something I don't do very often! So here it is, 2 different glow powder cups and 2 other glow methods. And they all look pretty darn glowy in the end, if you ask me! The halloween gods laughed and laughed and laughed.

    What’s your preferred way to create a glow in the dark tumbler??

    • @Wickedkittin
      @Wickedkittin Рік тому +2

      The most fun one I did was mixing various colours of glow powder into neon glitters to make a tumbler inspired by Sally Ragdoll's dress in NBC. That I stuck on with Mod Podge. Usually I do a glow in the dark spray paint or mix the powder into resin.

      The hogg and makerflo sub ones are so bright you can basically use them as a flashlight and just so easy to grab and go. But I actually think glow vinyl is pretty easy and consistent. The powders sometimes frustrate me 🤣 but I have a ton...

    These look so cool. I mixed some glow pigment powder directly into some mod podge when I made some glow glass cans. Made kind of a gel consistency that was easy to paint on. I blow dried mine to make drying time go a little faster as well.

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  9 місяців тому

      Thanks!! Yes, after I applied the layer of resin with glow powder mixed into it, I misted the entire cup - once all the way around - with 99% (or 91% if that’s what you have) isopropyl alcohol. A lot of people use either a torch or a heat gun to pop bubbles in resin once it’s on the tumbler, but I prefer misting with alcohol - it just works better for me.

      @Luxinda  Рік тому

      Thank you!! I have used those but not since I switched to tumblers. I used the FolkArt glow paint back when I was mostly paint pouring, and I was never very impressed. That doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be good on tumblers, but my guess is you’d get a better overall application and coverage with glow spray paint than a brush on paint (but that’s just a guess).

    I’ve got a couple questions, hopefully not to annoying. Is there a reason you stopped using the Marabu Rainbow Additive? And lastly, which cup do you prefer out of those 3? If say one didn’t have a sublimation gid cup.

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  Рік тому +1

      Thank you!! Not annoying at all 😊 I still use the Rainbow alcohol ink, but I noticed awhile ago that it really doesn’t show up much unless it’s on black, so that’s why I started using the 504 for everything that’s not black, so the sparkle actually shows up. If I didn’t have the glow sub tumbler … ? I’m so used to using the glow spray paint that I’d probably choose that just because I’m so familiar with it. But I think once my glow spray paint stash is used up, I’ll switch over to the powder with tackit - I was really impressed with how that turned out! Great questions!!

    I haven't done one yet, I think one with a Christmas theme might be interesting. Although I bought some waterslide paper a while ago, I lost my nerve. Must have something to do with the water. But I gonna try. I found some glow in the dark powder in the clearance section in Michael's. They were so cheap, I didn't say a word. When prepping the Hogg Glow cup, do you do anything to prep the cup?

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  Рік тому

      I wipe it down with 91% or 99% isopropyl alcohol, but that’s all. However, if you’d prefer to sand it, then that’s fine, too. Another option is to clean it with alcohol and then spray with matte clear spray. I know I’m not providing a cut-and-dry answer, but I have yet to see actual proof that one method works better than others. I think it’s whichever method you’re most comfortable using. Thank you for the question!!

      Well, in this case, after I applied the resin with glow powder mixed in, I misted the whole cup with 99% isopropyl alcohol. That usually evens everything out, but you’ll need to test it to see if it works as well with your particular resin.

    I'm gonna make a 7 inch pyramid, how much glow powder should I use ?

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  Рік тому

      Wow! That’ll be amazing!! I don’t actually know the calculations for a solid piece like that. I mean, technically you can add as much glow powder as you want - there’s really not a limit. But at some point, there’s probably an amount beyond which the final piece won’t glow any brighter, if that makes sense. Ok, if you already know how many ounces of resin you’ll need for a 7” pyramid mold, I would suggest - and this is just a guess - 10% glow powder. So say the mold requires 10 ounces of resin, you’ll mix in 1 ounce of powder. OR you could do an experiment first with a much smaller amount, like get a silicone ice cube tray, mix up resin to fill several cubes of the tray, and mix different amounts of glow powder into each cube (10%, 20%, 30%, etc). After the resin sets up, test the cubes under UV light and decide which you like best. Then use the same ratio of powder to resin for the entire pyramid mold. Hopefully this makes some sense. Good luck!!!! I’d love to hear how your pyramid turns out!!

    What type of sandpaper did you use to sand the tumblers?

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  4 місяці тому

      Thanks for the question! I usually use an 80 grit sanding block from Walmart, but a sheet of 80 grit sandpaper would work just as well.

    Do you have to put epoxy over them in order to sublimate on them?

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  Рік тому

      Actually, no - once there is epoxy resin on a tumbler, then you can't do sublimation. Only the sublimation tumblers straight out of their box -- with nothing on them yet except the layer of polyester added by the manufacturer -- can be sublimated. So none of the 4 tumblers in this video were actually used for sublimation at all.

    I bought a Hogg Glow in the dark tumbler, but I couldn't stand the rough feel of the tumbler. Did you have the same issue or have you found a less rough option. My customer who wants them is definitely not interested in the feel of that one.

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  Рік тому

      Thank you - great question! I haven’t tried the MakerFlo glow sub tumblers yet, so I honestly don’t know if they are smoother than the Hogg brand. I know Rae over at Raes Turquoise Turtle has used MakerFlo glow cups, so she might be able to help you with that. If you can’t find a smoother tumbler, then another option is a layer of resin over the tumbler once the design is sublimated onto it. It works well but obviously adds to the time and cost of making the tumbler.

    Could you engrave in the spray painted one??

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  9 місяців тому

      That’s a great question, but I have no idea because I have never experimented with engraving so I’m not sure what would happen. I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful.

    Did you also add epoxy to the cup that came ready to go? I literally hate the feel of those glow in the dark tumblers.

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  Рік тому

      Yes, to keep this a somewhat level playing field for the comparison, I resin’d all 4 tumblers.

    Did you put epoxy on the SSD cup before you put on waterslide?

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  Рік тому

      Yes, there is epoxy resin on each of the 4 tumblers before I apply the waterslides, just to keep everything as equivalent as possible. You can see that at time stamp 9:53. Thanks for the question!!

    How do I activate my glow in the dark cup? I left it in the sun? Not working

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  Рік тому

      That could be a problem - the thing that usually happens most often with glow-in-the-dark items is overexposure to sunlight or UV light, and the glow stuff loses its ability to recharge. I don’t think there’s a fix for that, not that I’ve ever heard of. I’m sorry!
