Nightmare Before Christmas Tumbler Glow-in-the-Dark, Tattoo, Revised, Minimal Editing

  • Last year, I uploaded a video showing an early attempt at using full-sleeve temporary tattoo art of Jack Skellington and Oogie Boogie from the Nightmare Before Christmas to make a glow-in-the-dark 30-oz skinny tumbler (see that video here: • Applying Nightmare Bef... ). The video was a pretty big success -- at least for me and my channel at that time -- so this year as we start to think about getting tumblers ready for Halloween, I wanted to offer an updated video since I've made quite a few of these tumblers in the interim and have learned a few things. I did not edit much in this video, and I used very limited "fast-mo" because I wanted to show folks how I create this tumbler in real time, with tips, tricks, and suggestions. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND: This is just my way of making this cup. There are other methods, other materials to use, other ways to cut/trim the art, etc. -- all of the ways are valid and wonderful. This video simply shows how I do it.
    Send me a nice letter (I'll write back - promise!)!! I may even send you a small gift... maybe... you never know!

    I love Swirls! Mostly swirls of color, but really any swirls at all - I think they add a beauty and grace to everything. So after I started making soap a few years ago, and needing some sort of biz name that didn't sound like everyone else's version of suds-r-us, I decided on Luxinda Swirl. Luxinda is a twist on my real name, and I quickly started putting swirls of color in all of my handmade soaps.
    Now I'm branching out a bit, and I want to keep adding swirls to everything I do!

      Thank you!!! Now that 30-oz “thick” or “fatty” tumblers are available, it’s actually much easier - lots less cutting and piecing involved to get everything to fit on the tumbler.

      Yeah, it's not easy, and I can't explain what it is that makes it show up better sometimes vs others (I'm very much not technically inclined with photography in general). I just watched your vinyl wrap glow cups video, and I thought both of yours looked so cool when you showed the glow. The first one you wrapped that seemed to show somewhat less glow actually looked like all the buildings in the wrap graphic had lights glowing from the roof tops, like the whole city was on fire - I loved it!!!

      It’s funny, this video is quite old, but just today I’ve received two comments about wishing there were something other than resin to work with. You’re in luck! 😁 Here’s how I responded to the last comment:
      The most common alternative to resin is Brite Tone, which also has to be applied in multiple layers, but is considered non-toxic.
      Something like a spray or even brush-on varnish won’t provide enough protection.

    Thank you for this video. After watching your first video last year, I wanted to make this cup but never got around to it. I watched your new video and was inspired. I've got the tattoo on the cup which came out great thanks to your instructions. I still have to go around the white edges and then epoxy. My question is, it seemed like you only did one coat of epoxy in the video. If I do more than one coat, will the glow still show through? I just want to make sure my cup is good and sturdy. I'm not selling it, it's just or me.

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks! I'm glad updating the video was helpful. I tend to show only the one coat in a video because adding another coat won't really change anything so it seems like extra unnecessary video time. But, yes, I do add another coat (or two if you need it to achieve a nice smooth, flat surface) before I sell the cups. And, no, adding more clear resin will definitely not affect the glow or its brightness. Good luck with your cup -- you'll be churning them out in no time 😁

    Love ur tumbler, so clever. Quick question, how do you prepare your tumblers for spray paint? Do you coat it on the inner rim first? Or do you clean it up after the project is done and what chemical works best for you? Thanks!

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you! All I do to prep for spray paint is sand the cup, clean it with alcohol, then start spraying. I don’t coat the tumbler on the inside, although I know some people do or they line the inner rim with tape because they don’t want to clean later, and that’s great! I just figure that I’ll probably end up cleaning the finished cup anyway, so I don’t worry about prevention as much in the beginning. I clean inside the rim with acetone, then wash the whole cup really well with warm water and dish soap so there’s no leftover smell before I package it up.

    I’ve watched this video many times and I’m going to try it…I’m wondering in regards to the maribu rainbow ink…do you think if one used a very small amount it would give a metallic look to a cup? I’m making a tumbler with a beer label for a guy and just looking to give it a metallic look

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  2 роки тому +1

      Definitely give the tattoo cup a try! As for the rainbow, I don’t think it will look metallic. Even just a little bit of the rainbow alcohol ink completely disperses through the resin, and the whole cup looks sparkly. I’ve done videos where I mix a metallic marbling mica into a little resin, drizzle that onto a cup, then hit the drizzled resin with a torch flame, and the metallic drizzle sort of puffs apart and makes metallic lacing. That probably makes no sense, but here’s one of the videos: ua-cam.com/video/e9ZHQVmbCsI/v-deo.html
      I don’t know if it’ll help, but I hope it does.

    I wanted to do a glitter peek a boo but I wanted the glitter part to glow....do you think this would work spraying it over a coat of epoxy put decal on paint white and remove decal???

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  2 роки тому

      I am definitely not a peekaboo expert since I've never made one. But If you start by glow painting the cup like I do in this video, then apply a layer of epoxy that has glow powder and ultrafine glitter in it, you'll have a great glow/glitter base layer. Then over top of that, put on all your temporary vinyl, spray paint it white (or any other color) and remove the vinyl. That seems like it would work well. Maybe someone else who does peekaboo tumblers will chime in here.

    are those tumblers for collection or actually drinking cups, is the resin safe? thanks..pretty cup..

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks! The cups can absolutely be used for drinking -- resin is not inside the tumbler at all, which is double-walled stainless steel, so with the lid and straw, there's no need for the drink or the person drinking to be in contact with the resin. The resin itself is also safe for contact once fully cured, which is about 72 hours (and they aren't shipped until after they are fully cured). On the other hand, I know some folks do also collect them and never use them for drinking. Functional art :) Thank you for your question!

    • @Luxinda

      I think on the original video I made of this a year earlier, someone expressed dismay. But really, it’s separate or have someone completely covered by overlap because of the taper of the cup. Now that skinny straight (no taper) tumblers are standard, it’s not as much of an issue 😊

    Can the glow in the dark spray work on a black base or only white

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  2 роки тому +1

      I haven’t actually tried it so I can’t be 100% certain, but most glow cups you see show the glow only in the light areas of the design, not in the black areas. So my guess is glow paint on a black base won’t look like much at all except maybe a glowy faint shadow. I did put glow powder in resin and drizzle it on a black-painted cup, and you could see where the drizzles were when the cup was in a dark room and charged with a black light. But it was very faint. Video of that if you’re curious: ua-cam.com/video/DUFTqoxfdDc/v-deo.html

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks! Do you mean “shows up white?” in regular light? The glow paint layers on the cup show up as a very subtle off-white indoors. When you start spraying the first glow paint layer on the white painted cup, it will look slightly different from stark white, but it’s subtle and not noticeable on camera at all.

      Yeah, I wouldn’t say it’s supposed to be backwards, but since the creator of the tattoo art didn’t mirror it, that’s how it ends up in all the tattoos, and there’s really nothing you can do about it, unfortunately. 🤷‍♀️

      Rainbow Ink is AMAZING!

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  2 роки тому +2

      Rainbow alcohol ink adds superfine rainbow color-shifting sparkles to the resin. I haven't found anything else that works quite the same, but there are a number of super-fine "glitter additives" out there (pretty much every glitter company carries one now) that are available to add in to your resin for extra sparkle.

    I want to try this but I can’t find the 30 oz tumbler with taper. Will it work using one that is not tapered? Thanks for your help.

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  2 роки тому

      It definitely should work just fine. In fact, you may not have to do as much cutting and piecing of the tattoo with the skinny straight as I did with the tapered cup. AND if you can find a 30-oz thick, then you may not have to do any cutting except the first cut to split the tattoo in half across just above Zero's house, and it may fit even better. Rae over at Rae's Turquoise Turtle did a video with this tattoo and the 30-oz thick, and said it's basically a perfect fit. • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  9 місяців тому +1

      Yes, unfortunately that can be an issue. After a lot of trial and error, I have had the best results being able to avoid or significantly minimize cracking by being pretty quick about the entire process. I used to let the cup dry overnight after applying the tattoo, to make sure there’s no moisture at all before applying resin. But that amount of time, especially in colder, drier air, can lead to cracking. Another thing I used to do was spray the tattood cup with matte clear spray to seal it before resin. However, I think since matte spray paint dries much faster than glossy spray paint, the actual drying of the matte clear is adding to the possible cracking problem.
      So now I apply the tattoo, leave it to dry for just a couple hours, then apply resin. If you still want to seal the tattoo before resin, just to protect the tattoo image, then use a semi-gloss or even a gloss clear spray paint, then apply the resin as soon as the paint is dry. I can’t guarantee this will magically fix the cracking all the time, but it should definitely help reduce most of the cracks.

    Would you have to cut out the characters for a straight tumbler?

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  2 роки тому

      Very good question! I have not tried a 30 straight yet. I’m guessing the cutting would be slightly different but might still need to happen. I hope to do that video soon. I do know that with a 30-oz thick, no side cutting is necessary at all, so that would be the easiest cup to use if you have it and the customers are ok with the size. I don’t think 30 thicks fit in any car cup holders, but then again, not everyone takes their tumblers in a car…

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  Рік тому +1

      Well, in regards to the spray paint problem, the easiest fix would be to spray more layers of glow paint over the accidental white paint, then finish with the clear. As for the first problem, if you put the entire tattoo on upside down, there really isn’t a fix for that. You will need to repaint the cup as though you’re just starting, with all the different layers, then apply a second tattoo right side up. I’m sorry I can’t help more than that. Tattoos are notoriously fragile. You might be able to lift and reposition a waterslide, but definitely not a tattoo. 🙁

    How much marabu rainbow ink do you put in your resin?

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  2 роки тому

      Basically, I add a 'healthy squirt' -- that's really all I can say in terms of measuring anything. In the beginning, I would suggest adding a few drops, stirring it in, and seeing how you like the way that looks, then add more next time until you're happy with the overall added sparkle.

    • @Luxinda
      @Luxinda  Рік тому +1

      The most common alternative to resin is Brite Tone, which also has to be applied in multiple layers, but is considered non-toxic.
      Something like a spray or even brush-on varnish won’t provide enough protection.

      Not exactly. I’ve had the jack o’ lantern on the bottom tear completely one time when I put resin on it - that was a mess!
