    I start listening classical guitar with Segovia, then start reading about the grand composers. Tarrega, Albeniz, Sor, Barrios Mangore and of course, Villa-lobos and his preludes played by Bream and cried, what a great performer, such passion and sadness, he makes love with the guitar. Amazing.

    The embellishments that Julian Bream puts in the Gran Solo are absolutely brilliant. Reading the score along we can see all the Bream's criativity.

    This is my favorite piece by my favorite guitarist. I wish the spell would be fully projected by posting the rest of this one. I very much appreciate this posting, and much thanks to venusandmars. I in no way mean to be critical, but my personal preference would be to be able (if possible) to watch Bream play all the way through; with all musical presentations I prefer this option to any video.

Let me watch a master finger his guitar and whoever is doing the intro voice over needs to be told shut up... This man Julian Bream is just too good a artist for that Mickey Mouse stuff... Let me watch and listen to him play...

    I love the feeling that Julian puts into his music and for me it Like Janis Joplin when she "Feels" her music. I know many will disagree and i'm not comparing Rock to Classical but like I said Julian Feels his music. I think its insane to bash someone for their interpretation of a musical piece because lets face it we are ALL different...:)

    I remember, back in the days when TV was all we had, programmes that featured such excellent musicians as Julian Bream were few and far between, yet, instead of being treated to the performance, we were forced to endure banal clips of scenery, and so on, while we ground our teeth to a pulp hoping that the maestro would soon reappear. I wrest my quase.

    Genius!!! I've played classical guitar since 16. I'm now 49 and even now every time I play a piece like this I have breams tone and phrasing in my head. Williams is technically better but breams feeling and musicality have never been matched IMO.

  • @CNFrostXY
    @CNFrostXY 13 років тому

    @williamduranti Yes in fact to most people he would be the most 'expressive'(romantic we should say) guitarist because he plays in that Romantic style. While others like Pepe Romero would be more of a Spanish Flamenco style. Williams plays in a more traditional and conservative style and always takes the composers' purpose as the highest instead of individual interpretations. Russell is quiet traditional as well similar to Williams but still slightly different. CDs show everyone is different.

  • @bilstew

    i agree with other contributor regarding commentary during the playing of this piece by julian bream.Full marks as usual to julian for great interpretation of the piece.The guitar comes over a little light in my opinion but could be perhaps due to accoustics.I think a guitar with a little more body within the wood would enhance the piece even more, especially at the bass end thus creating more even balance between its bass and treble register.(solely my opinion) bilstew.

  • @bilstew

    @Pitcairn2 Yes of course....after all this man is on a pedestal but maybe not yet .Did you read my comments carefully especially about the values of the instrument.???...To hear a well balanced guitar on youtube type in John Feeley...Bach Chaconne in D minor .....incomparable...

    I think I would agree with Pitcairn2 that Julian Bream is the greatest guitarist of the 20th century, but I'm amazed at his left hand posture. It looks horrible. His fingers are seldom perpendicular to the fingerboard. How does he manage to avoid accidental muting of adjacent strings?

  • @oldwhtman
    @oldwhtman 12 років тому

    Indeed. Bream is like like a colorized version of John Williams. They are both technically flawess, but Bream's playing seems so much more expresssive and rich with tonal variety.

    • @luix7481
      @luix7481 6 років тому

      oldwhtman That is because Juliam Bream can show a much higher of emotion with the guitar, meaning he is a superior player when you compare both playing the same piece of music.

  • @fingerhorn4

    The intrusive voice-over is I think probably Christopher Nupen of Allegro Films, the company that made many documentaries about music for British TV quite a while back. Considered innovative then, Allegro films now sound tired, cliched and patronising with their over-gushing, sycophantic productions about great musicians which do those musicians poor service by being obsequious rather than enquiring into the real person they are featuring. Having said that, I'm glad the footages are still available, and if you switch off the irritating commentary there are some great clips of the wonderful Bream, du Pre, Milstein and others.

    • @colletteglennon939
      @colletteglennon939 8 років тому +1

      the voice over is by Lyndon Brook a great actor from the 50· and 60's television.I have the DVD.Bream's voice is immediately recogniseable by its' south London accent.No public schoolboy he,but a child prodigy.Like Callas he will never be matched

    • @fingerhorn4
      @fingerhorn4 4 роки тому

      @@colletteglennon939 OK I stand corrected about the voice over but the film direction IS by Christopher Nupen. I am grateful that he documented and shot a lot of video footage of Bream, but I find nearly all of his films would have been better in other hands, because Nupen is a serial imposer of his own scripts on what should be a wonderfully interference-free footage of Bream's fantastic playing. By all means show clips of the Spanish countryside in between performances, but Nupen was in the habit of imposing his own EGO on top of Bream's wonderful talent.

Now, through UA-cam and its generous contributors, twelve year old children around the world can see, hear, and believe.

    • @aseerose5684

      Yes, Bream in person is such a gentleman in the classic sense, while Segovia seemed to be rather a curmudgeon. And Bream's hands are so beautiful, while Segovia had short pudgy fingers. I wondered how he could play so beautifully with such hands. I heard them both in concert and crowded around with all the other fans to see them up close, and hear their voices. Bream was so suave yet approachable and took time to actually hear and respond to his fans, and Segovia was rather distant and brusque. That was such a wonderful time, when the professional concert level guitarists were so few and every recording was bringing to life again music seldom heard for a century and more. Bream was the best, and to my mind, the pinnacle in all ways, on and off the stage. I would chop wood and carry water for that man.
