Ok so I just noticed this. Marcus has a pick both on his mouth as well as on the top of his guitar in the beginning. When he starts singing he gets the one thats on top of the guitar and then drops the one from his lip to the top of the guitar, anddd to add to that he still has 6 more picks on the guitar mic. 4 grey and 2 yellow
They said in an interview that about half was made live, Reminder for sure and probably Ghosts that we knew and Lover's eyes aswell. But as you say they're amazing live, i actually prefer pretty much every live version better than their studio versions.
Anybody notice Marcus starts with a pick in his mouth and one laying on the top of his guitar. He picks with his fingers first then grabs the one on the guitar to quickly strum those first few powerful chords, spits out the one in his mouth onto his guitar, ditches the one in his hand to start picking again, then grabs the one he spit out on top of his guitar to start strumming again later on. That's f*cking genius.
perrineville, the tuning for this song is Drop D - both top & bottom strings tuned down to D. From there it's pretty straightforward, especially if you already know other Mumford songs. The chords are just variants of D, A, Bm and G - it's easy to work out from watching this video.
Standard tuning, drop your E strings down to D, then your in his tuning, the first note in the song is a D open on the first string, then he bars the bottom half including 4th string on second fret, then he moves to a B minor, back to bar, than to 3rd string on 4th fret plus 6th string on 5th fret, then back to B minor than Bar, than repeat
Track 2 on new album Babel, this will be a single methinks. Anything I ever see them do they look like they are passionate about. They are the best. xxx
Yes, that distinctive Mumford & Sons sound is created by open tunings - the main ones they use are Open D, and Open C6, as well as using a capo a lot too. As myself and bmortimore have already said though, this song is a more simple Drop D which I don't think they've used in any other song.
No it's Double Drop D, the highest string is down to a D too. The only time this string is actually even fretted in this song is on the A chord where he barres the chord (x02222).
starts on the base note of the chords then goes to highest string , then to 2nd string and then the third before backtothe base ithink. kinda of in gallop, you will need to tune down as well
i like to play spot the difference with Mumford and sons song, some will play the live song and the album version to me in a random order i then have to say which one is which i always go live cause atleast there a 50% chance i'll be right
lol @ all the people walking by the recording room. How do you not freak out!? "Oh, hey, just another work day. Nice, Mumford and Sons in my window. That's...typical..."
If I were in the hallway outside of that room, I would not just be walking by! I would hate myself to know that Mumford was playing in a room I walked by and I didn't know it!
I think this will be the next single too. They really seem to enjoy playing it live and promoting it, and it's quite punchy and radio-friendly. The comment about the 'while we are young' bit sounding like One Direction made me laugh too as I was thinking the same; if it does become a single I can imagine people might say they've ripped them off which would be funny as they first wrote this song over 3 years ago!
I would imagine it's something to do with his recent arm/wrist injury. He only started playing guitar again live in the past two months, so maybe it still hurts him sometimes.
i cant figure out what hes playing in the build in the begining i see the D A Bm Bm A G Bm Bm A D A Bm Bm A G Bm but the far down bit on the bottom frets doesnt match the sound how i see it
if you know anything about your guitar it means Down Down Up Down and I'm talking about the strumming pattern; but I guess you don't because if you did you wouldn't have asked me such a stupid question.

I have never heard a band which is absolutely fantastic on recordings and even more bloody brilliant live. Mumford & Sons is in my opinion the best!
The transition from Babel to this song on the album is absolutely amazing!!!
My favorite quote from this: "Spare my sin for the arch, I was too slow to depart. I'm a cad, but I'm not a fraud. I'd set out to serve the Lord"
Today in #SiriusXM history: Mumford & Sons gave us chills with a live performance of "Whispers In The Dark" ua-cam.com/video/o3IiIMxBCXM/v-deo.html
Ich liebe diese Band!!!!!!!!♥♥♥
I cannot describe how I love them!!
I've seen Foo Fighters, Nickelback, Fun, and Mumford and Sons live, all great bands live but Mumford and Sons was by far the best, unforgettable:)
this is rapidly becoming one of my favourite songs

mumford and sons are the greatest band on the radio today
this is by far my new favorite Mumford and Sons song.

he sounds as good live as he does in a studio recording... wow that is talent.
The most beautiful tone from a guitar I have ever heard. Love, love, love!!

I'm so glad Sirius could afford an HD camera now, you know, since they are a subscription based music service and all.
Track 2 on new album Babel, this will be a single methinks. Anything I ever see them do they look like they are passionate about. They are the best. xxx

Why was the camera on the kick drum when there was banjo going on? Seriously, Sirius, you blew that one.
In happier times for the band...
thanx ! Sooo preciuous. They use often this open chords ?
holy shit these guys sound incredible live tho
Never sounds the same without a double bass.
right now?! you mean in the history of bands and in the future of music right?!
No it's Double Drop D, the highest string is down to a D too. The only time this string is actually even fretted in this song is on the A chord where he barres the chord (x02222).
took me like 3 hours of watching this vid to learn how to play this song PROPERLY thank gawd

Wow, real mature. I wasn't saying it was a bad thing. Trust me, I love Mumford and sons cx
If I were in the hallway outside of that room, I would not just be walking by! I would hate myself to know that Mumford was playing in a room I walked by and I didn't know it!
I wish Mumford and Sons Played in my wedding.
i was actually looking for a skillet cover :P still i found something better
hahahahaha. I just got that. Totally different songs. But both awesome. :)
Does anyone the picking pattern hes doing? Sounds amazing!

its a satalite radio station...there's probably few ppl there
I would imagine it's something to do with his recent arm/wrist injury. He only started playing guitar again live in the past two months, so maybe it still hurts him sometimes.
Does anybody know what guitar Marcus is using?
i cant figure out what hes playing in the build in the begining
i see the
D A Bm
Bm A G Bm
Bm A
D A Bm
Bm A G Bm
but the far down bit on the bottom frets doesnt match the sound how i see it
Wow
beautifull.. ;___;
mumford is absolutely not my type, but I think I fell in love with him.
What is the interview that Winston is asleep on Ben's shoulder at first
i think it's DDUD but it is hard to hear :D
Are you sirius?
What’s this, Open D tuning?
Enda Farrell double drop D :)
drops pick from his mouth into his hand and catches it. like a boss.
He has one laying on his guitar. when he takes that one to play he drops the second one (that sits betweens his lips) on his guitar.
I have the same guitar pick as him :O -3
I caught it. But yeah, you're right, the masses don't, do they?
im pretty sure this song is about making love to a woman, mumford and sons is so perfect at symbolism that no one catches!
Is marcus using blue dunlop picks?!?!?! Thats a heavy gauge for what he is playing, but its probably comfortable for him.
It not standard tuning :)
im pretty sure theres no one but them in the room
