The Eat, Sleep, Console Care Approach: Caring for Infants Exposed to Opioids

Infants who were exposed to opioids during pregnancy can be born with severe withdrawal symptoms, a condition known as neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome, or NOWS.
As part of its efforts to find scientific solutions to the opioid crisis, the NIH HEAL Initiative® investigates ways to improve care of infants with NOWS. This research shows that a care approach called “Eat, Sleep, Console” (ESC) can help these infants get better with less need for opioid medications and go home from the hospital sooner.
