I haven't been able to stop thinking about this movie since I saw it in theaters! Between Austin's performance, the music, the direction and the editing, it's an absolute visual feast. And the emotional journey of Elvis has really stuck with me way beyond anything I could've anticipated. Your reaction and commentary was a treat!

one thing they did not mention in this movie, elvis did not take drugs just for the sake of it, elvis was actually sick, and he really thought he needed the drugs. plus in this time taking drugs that was given to you by ur doctors was not considered a "bad" thing.

Author Sally Hoedel's Elvis: Destined to Die Young notes that Elvis's mother's parents were first cousins, with ill-health running through that side of the family.
Elvis's mother Gladys died aged just 46, and three of his uncles also died young.
Hoedel told The Observer that while Elvis certainly did take a lot of medication, his health difficulties may have prompted him to do so.

@@elenadehaan6549 There is no proof of her claims. She is not a doctor and all the people who knew Elvis are dead... So how knows his ancestors, without a DNA test? Gladys was a drinker, started to drink and taking diet pills... Later, she developed hepatitis and died from a heart attack. Her claims are based on opinions & speculations.

This is just a few things about Gladys and the relationship she shared with Elvis for those who are interested.
Gladys Presley was very attached to Elvis and he was very attached to her. For Gladys, that attachment was created in part by the loss of Jesse Garon. Elvis was born 35 minutes after Gladys had delivered Jesse stillborn. Although she'd delivered the identical twins in their home, Gladys was close to death after hemorrhaging and both she and Elvis were taken to a hospital.
Family and friends noticed a change in Gladys when they returned home. She started expressing her belief that Elvis had inherited Jesse's soul and became paranoid that she would somehow lose him. Years later she would have a miscarriage and dash hopes of more children.
Her father had died suddenly from pneumonia when she was 18 and her mother passed from tuberculosis when she was 22, just months before Gladys had Elvis. A few years later, Vernon was sent to prison for forgery leaving her to fend for she and Elvis on her own. All these thing combined fueled her belief that she could lose her only child at anytime. This made her over protective.
The family was poverty stricken but she and Vernon did their best to provide for Elvis and created a close bond that was essentially their own little world. A big part of their world was religion. It has been said that when Gladys would take little Elvis to church he would wiggle out of her lap, run to the front of the church to watch and try to imitate the choir as they sang.
Elvis got his first guitar when he was 11. Stories vary from whether he initially wanted a bicycle or a rifle but either way Gladys didn't want him to potentially hurt himself so she decided to buy him the guitar thought to cost no more than $13.
Elvis and Gladys shared a special relationship that some may categorize as strange considering Gladys's over protective nature and their pet names and baby talking that extended even into Elvis's adult years but in their eyes it was merely their way of loving, nurturing and being there for one another.
The first song Elvis recorded was titled "My Happiness". He was 18, recorded it at Sun Records and it was meant to be a gift for Gladys. Elvis bought Graceland for his mother and doted on her. He was known to call her “Satnin” but he considered his parents his "babies" to take care of and was also known to call her his "baby". He often referred to her as his best girl.
Gladys was proud of Elvis but she had a difficult time dealing with his fame. She was constantly worrying over him. She drank and she was taking diet pills but had suffered with bloating, persistent fatigue and severe depression for years. She was terrified about Elvis's enlistment in the army. His absences always increased the amount she drank.
Elvis was in Texas preparing to be stationed in Germany when he received word that she was hospitalized in grave condition. There had been an emergency call to Graceland precipitated by months of declining health. He threatened to go AWOL to be by her side but was instead granted emergency leave. He rushed straight to the hospital when he returned to Memphis. Gladys would pass two days later. Her cause of death was a heart attack but a contributing factor was liver failure due to alcohol poisoning. She was 46 and Elvis, 23, was devastated.
At her funeral Elvis could hardly walk and sobbed uncontrollably saying 'Oh God, everything I have is gone' and 'Goodbye, darling, goodbye. I love you so much. You know how much I lived my whole life just for you'. The saddest moment was when he collapsed on her coffin and cried out ”Please don't take my baby away! She's not dead. She's just sleeping.”
He would never get over her passing and it haunted him until he passed on August 16, 1977, 19 years to the day he laid his beloved mother to rest.

Liked the review. I am definitely going to start watching your channel. I saw this movie 5 times in the theater. I was lucky enough to see him in concert twice in the 1970s. It was magical.
In regard to Elvis’s finances - Vernon only had an 8th grade education.he was married by age 17. He had no idea how to invest money or take advantage of tax shelters. Basically, Vernon was in charge of paying the bills. I don’t think Vernon knowingly did anything wrong regarding Elvis’s financial stability. Before Elvis went into the army, he paid the highest income taxes as an individual in the US. It didn’t get much better when he returned. Elvis had exorbitant spending practices. On a whim he would buy 12 Cadillacs or fly back and forth to Denver to get his favorite sandwich. In his last years, he often had to take short term loans out on Graceland to meet payroll until money from a concert tour started coming in. At the time of his death he was relatively broke for a man that had made so much money in his life time. After his death, Graceland was almost lost due to tax and estate bills.
The colonel had nothing to do with Elvis starting drugs. Though he did not intervene either. Elvis started using uppers on a regular basis when he was in the army. Military doctors prescribed them to stay awake during night maneuvers. It was pretty common then. My dad was a gunner on a bomber in WWII. He was given Dexedrine when they flew missions at night. If a person takes uppers on a regular basis, sleeping pills are needed to sleep. A vicious cycle begins. It wasn’t till Elvis started to develop serious health issues that things got dangerously out of control. His opioid use just spiraled up. Many people tried to help Elvis, but he was Elvis. He could get any doctor to prescribe him meds. No one said no to Elvis. Let’s just remember, Elvis just showed up at the White House uninvited and asked to see the president. And they let him! Who else but Elvis could get away with that.
Elvis began having weight problems as early as 1965 - quite a few years before the divorce. Watch his movies around that time. Especially Clambake. I think that’s the one. It is one of the movies with Shelley Fabre.

Even though his hair was dyed dark brown, and he wore dark brown or jet black wigs in some scenes, Austin Butler is a natural blonde. Elvis Presley, who was known to have dark brown or jet-black hair, was also a natural blonde.
In real life, "Colonel" Tom Parker was born Andreas "Dries" van Kuijk in The Netherlands on June 26, 1909. He entered the USA illegally at the age of 19 and enlisted in the army as Tom Parker a few months later. Because he joined a foreign army, he lost his Dutch citizenship, rendering him effectively stateless.
The entire film was shot on location in Queensland, Australia.
Lisa Marie Presley was initially nervous about seeing the film. Presley stated that toward the middle of viewing the film, Austin Butler's performance made her relax more. In an email published after her death, Presley praised the "incredible film," stating it helped her daughters through the difficult period after her son's suicide. It was "a break from suffering and a ray of light that hit us last year... It made them so proud and honored to be his granddaughters. It made them feel blessed for a moment and less cursed in life. It made us all so proud because it was a true depiction of who he was."
Austin Butler took tap dancing and swing dancing classes to perfect Elvis' dance moves and physical body language.
Despite his slim appearance as a young man, Elvis Presley had been a talented amateur boxer in his youth and even represented his school. This skill would come in useful during his film career where he was frequently required to get involved in a brawl.
Austin Butler and Elvis Presley are 16th cousins twice removed. Elvis' father, Vernon Presley, and Austin's mother, Lori, share a common ancestry.
Austin Butler never actually met any of Elvis Presley's extended family until after the film was completed, as they had not been involved with the production. When he finally met Lisa Marie Presley, she was teary-eyed as she hugged him and thanked him for his faithful portrayal of her dad. She then escorted him to Elvis's bedroom where they both sat on his bed and chatted into the evening.
Shonka Dukureh was born on September 3, 1977, a little more than two weeks after Elvis died. This is her first and last film. Tragically, a month after the film's release, Dukureh passed away at the age of 44.
Elvis Presley was the first person in his immediate family to earn a high school diploma. He graduated from Humes High School in 1953.
This is Baz Luhrmann's first biographical film. Originally, at some point in the 2000s, Luhrmann was going to make a biographical film about Ancient Greek King Alexander the Great. The film would've starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Nicole Kidman. However, Oliver Stone beat him to the punch by directing Alexander (2004). Luhrmann ended up abandoning the project and decided to write and direct Australia (2008).
It was estimated that over 80,000 people attended Elvis Presley's funeral. President Jimmy Carter ordered the National Guard to keep order during the procession.
The assassination of Robert F. Kennedy followed that of Martin Luther King, with Kennedy's televised statement of sympathy still being fresh on everyone's mind in which he referred to the assassination of his brother, President John F. Kennedy. With the Vietnam War at its height and great unrest in the country regarding both the war and civil rights, his almost certain Presidential win was seen as a path to sanity in both arenas. The impact of this as portrayed in the film was very strong.
This is the ninth time that Tom Hanks has portrayed a real-life person. He portrayed Jim Lovell in Apollo 13 (1995), Charlie Wilson in Charlie Wilson's War (2007), Captain Richard Phillips in Captain Phillips (2013), Walt Disney in Saving Mr. Banks (2013), James B. Donovan in Bridge of Spies (2015), Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger in Sully (2016), Ben Bradlee in The Post (2017), and Fred Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood (2019). In Catch Me If You Can (2002), he portrays Carl Hanratty, who is based on real-life FBI agent Joseph Shea. In the documentary series, Freedom: A History of US (2003), he portrays Daniel Boone, Paul Revere, Abraham Lincoln, Jacob Coxey, and Charles E. Wood in various periods.
Austin Butler was born fourteen years and a day after Elvis Presley's death. Butler's birthday is August 17.
Though not shown or mentioned in the film, after Elvis Presley and Priscilla Presley separated in 1972, Elvis briefly dated 20-year-old Mary Kathleen "Kathy" Selph, a dancer and singer at a Memphis club called World Away. She and Elvis met at the club and started dating in June. A month later, she died in an automobile accident while driving home from work. Elvis was on tour, and when he was told of her death he was devastated. He sent a large wreath and batches of flowers to Kathy's funeral.
When "Colonel" Tom Parker throws a glass, he curses with the Dutch word "Godverdomme", which translates to "goddamn" in English.

Just to let you know, at 6:09 when Elvis was given a Bottle of Pepsi to settle is stomach, it's because when Pepsi was known as Brad's drink it was sold by a doctor in his drugstore to relive dyspepsia (Indigestion) in the 1890's before he went in to full-blown production in the 1900's & selling it across the US

    Neat stuff...
For all of Parker's faults, and there were many, he always demanded that his only client be treated as the greatest star in the world. Not only did he make Elvis the highest paid entertainer on the planet, he insisted Elvis be given every perk imaginable as part of every deal he ever negotiated for his 'boy'...

A good review...apart from the burger reference at the beginning ( heard it a million times)...Elvis had underlying medical conditions most of his life and when he was creatively held back when doing all those movies, same concert tours in the 70s, rejecting big movie scripts and top song writers Elvis would fall into a depressive state and then his diet would be poor etc etc...but when Elvis had a challenge he always rose to it...68special, return to the international, Madison square garden and Aloha show... unfortunately no one knew about Parkers status..Elvis never knew.... Elvis' father was not a financial man and couldn't control Elvis' spending and what Parker said Elvis owed him scared the hell out of Elvis and Vernon because Elvis always feared being poor again...even tho it would of been laughed out of court...Parker was a promoter not a manager and he was great to begin with but unfortunately Elvis was too loyal to people and hated confrontation and that's why Parker continued to milk the cash cow that was Elvis...a talent wasted because imagine what might of been.

Your Mother is a sharp woman! When I learned of the project I prayed the film would take ‘Col Tom’ to task; for the most part, prayers answered. My one disappointment was the ending may leave some viewers feeling the Col lived a destitute life after E died, wondering the casinos. Maybe he did eventually, but only after he went on to have a career repping other successful artists- once again on the back of Elvis & on lies😡
For me PERSONALLY, I do believe ‘Col Tom’ was indeed responsible for E’s early death. It was he who got Elvis hooked on the uppers & downers to keep him on tours, doing 2 shows a nt in Vegas, churning out subpar movies, etc. He was taking 50% of every dollar Elvis earned. He had to keep that money train running. Parker even said THE most important thing was that Elvis made it on stage to perform. Not his health, not his well being, not his young family… but performing twice a nt in Vegas to line the Col’s pockets. Disgusting. I can live w 95% Col Tom’s fault😏 I have wondered what the loss of a twin from your first breath mt do to one psychologically. I do think he carried the weight of trying to be 2 beating hearts for his Mama his AND her whole life. That has to be an awfully heavy burden.
It’s worth mentioning that opioids & other drugs he was taking can cause weight gain, edema + kidney & liver function issues- which adds to the edema & ‘puffiness’. He also ate foods which were not healthy (& that’s being kind) and at THE very worst times (middle of the night) which only compounded the problems & could speed along prediabetes or full blown diabetes. Vicious cycle & ticking time b0mb all at once😔
The man and his voice were painfully beautiful, and silenced far too soon. My parents played 3 Elvis songs often & early in our home lol: If I Can Dream, In The Ghetto, & Walk A Mile In My Shoes. More than songs, they were mantras by which my parents raised us in a socially changing South in the US. How blessed we were!!💖 Still, while I love these songs, I was not a ‘super fan’. My husband, born & raised in Chicagoland, was however & actually was lucky enough to see him live. Over the years I’ve gained a certain degree of respect for the man… but also of sadness😔
As a longtime fan & having seen him live, my husband was reluctant to see the film; he walked away impressed🥰
    Nice reaction; Thank You!!
    Stay safe & love much💖

.......... The film is incorrect showing him as a "blues only" artist. Right from the start, his first recordings 1953-55, he did ballads, pop, Bluegrass, and Country/Western Music. His non blues idols were Roy Rogers, Flatt & Scruggs, Gene Autry, Hank Snow, Bill Hailey (a contemporary) and especially Dean Martin & Bing Crosby. He even had operatic influences, Mario Lanza.
None of it is mentioned in newer biographies, this new movie, recent documentaries etc. But in older news stories, books, and movies, you will find it (1980s and earlier). Hell, all you gotta do is see his entire music catalog (discography) and any music afficionado will be able to pick out the genres. Rockabilly, Elvis' own unique form of music, was his blending of multiple genres of music. Because he covered some blues is what got him into controversy, so everyone always throws out all his other influences

46 years after his death, people are still calling Elvis the King of Rock'n'Roll, but he didn't like that title, he believed that the only King was God and he actually told this to his fans several times, he said: I believe that God is the only true king.
I think that Elvis is and only the king of Rock'n roll, he is the king of music because he can sing very well in any genre, but what do you think, is he good enough to be called a music king?
Elvis was really in my mind, the King of GOSPEL and other music, no one does it better then him, he is best known for making Rockn roll famous, so he was called The King of Rockn roll, but he never liked that people called him that.
He repeatedly stopped fans who said that he was the king of rock'n roll, telling them:
I'm just an entertainer and singer, God is the only true King (sometimes he adde and that it Christ)!!
Elvis was born in the poor parts of Tupelo Missisippi and it was mainly Afroamericans living there, at the place where Elvis family lived there only lived 3 more white familys, the rest was colored people, his family was dirtpoor until he became an artist after singing in a mainly colored peoples church during his childhood.
Did you know that he had several friends that where Afroamericans, one of his friends where James Brown, yes THAT James Brown (The King of Soul), another artist was B.B King, yes that B.B King...
He also was a good friend with Mohamed Ali, yes the GREATEST boxer of all time, he even had a Robe made for him, but it was to much bling on it so Ali wouldn't where it more then one time to a fight.
He really admired Martin Luther King very much, Elvis felt that all people are equal, unfortually he never got to meet him, that would have created to much problems for both of them at that time.
He had several medical problems, Glaucoma, (Insomnia) sleeping problems, irritable bowel syndrome and that will make you constipated, these are things that affected his real life and made him need medication to function.
Yes, he took medicines that today are considered to be called drugs, but at that time doctors prescribed it to him and to ordinary people, they did not know of the problems it could give people (side effects).
He never took any so-called street drugs, but unfortunately he did not realize that those medications would be a problem for him, he thought that they where ordinary medicine because his doctor prescribed them to him and to everyone else that needed it.
Many of his relativs died at a relatively young age, so even if he wouldn't have the medication, he might have died at about the same age.
He could never be alone and thus himself, at that time the word superstar did not exist, so nothing could prepare him for that kind of life.
Did you know that a big group of white people actually smashed his records and wanted to ban his music, just because they called the music he did so called N... music, that is so painfun to think that some people actually can think like that, skincolor is just color and nothing more, when will people realise that?
There are some videos of when Elvis joking and messing up, he loved to joke around and pretend that he did not have control, but he had total control, he acctually conducted his musicans and back up choirs all the time !
He is the only person to have 2 records gone to sell Gold and 2 to to sell Platinum since he died.
Elvis is also in almost every genre of Music Hall of Fame (5 that I'm sure of Rock 'n' Roll, Country, Gospel, Rockabilly and Rhythm and Blues), if Gospel is a genre in Music Hall of fame, then he should be in there to, but no one else is in more then perhaps 2 genres.
Not bad for someone who never took a single singing lesson, yes he sang in church so perhaps he learned a little there, right?
Something else that people tend to overlook:
He always conducts his musicans and backup singers, he never gets credit for being able to do that.
Imagen you are a singer, you have great musicans, you have great backup singers, no Guest Artists, no Autotune, no Lipsinging and no Fireworks, now all is about your skill, could you handle that pressure?
At the time when Elvis started, then Autotune did not exist yet and when it became availible, then he still did not use it, he did not need to, he always sang so that you could hear every word that he sang, the Fans always felt that he sang to just you !
That is what Elvis did in over 1600 concerts (during his 20 years as an artist), despite having problems with his health, like his Glaucoma, the headlights must have hurt his eyes like crazy.
He sang over 800 songs, I wonder how he could remember them all, he never vrote a song himself, so he had to remember other peoples lyrics, well that is amazing in it self.
By the way he had Glucomea and that must have been difficult being in the headlights all the time, that could be why he sometimes closes his eyes, but also sometimes squinting !
This unfortually made him temporary blind after the shows, that is why they led him of the stage and into his car, that is something that not many people knew about Elvis.
Elvis suits was made of 100% Polyester, or 100 cotton (I'm not sure witch one), it was originally a karate suit, it was very light, but it was hot, so it made him sweat a lot, he got some bad press about that, but if you give it all then you will sweat, it should be positive, right?
About the deep basevoice JD Sumner (a member of The Stamps Quartet) he is the Basso Profundo, I think it's called that, it is the deepest base singer there is.
A video about him helping others, look at this: ua-cam.com/video/CrJ1c9tm-C0/v-deo.html
Elvis made a show where all the money went to build the Memorial after Pearl Harbour, he talked to the nations about taking the Poliovaccin, Elvis took the first injection himself, he helped by donating a big amount of money to St Jude hospital, they fight against cancer (especially children with), he also gave away juwelery, gave away cars, he even gave away some houses to total strangers.
Elvis started an organization that helps people to get out of Homelessness (Presley Charitable Foundation, Presley Place), this organization helps people even now close to 50 years after he passed away.
A thing that you perhaps did not know: Elvis ALMOST NEVER did a show OUTSIDE OF USA, yes he did sing a few in Canada: 4 concerts, 2 in Toronto, 1 in Ottowa and 1 time in Vancouver (during the 50:s).
When the Aloha From Hawaii (Live in Honolulu 1973) was showed it had close to 1.5 Billion viewers from around the whole world and 3.7 billion people lived on earth at this time, so it was close to 1/3 of all of the population on earth that wiewed the show, it was the first time a single artist was shown LIVE around the globe.
Video of Mohammad Ali speech after Elvis died:
    ua-cam.com/video/PO8Kq_3KTyI/v-deo.html
I have to say that I loved being at Graceland and seeing his home, first we were at the house in Tupelo where he lived in his early years, he was born there !
You don't have a guide taking you on a tour, you can go all over yourself, but stay outside of the ropes and do not attempt to go upstairs, the outside is huge, so is the house, but you don't realise that from the front of the house.
I don't regret for a second that I was there, or that I stood at his grave site and said out loud that this is for the humanitarian Elvis/the person/the man and then I gave him a military salute, the others there just looked at me and asked if I didn't like his music.
So I told them that he was clearly one of the best singers and artists ever, but I loved his big heart more, he helped so many people without getting credit for it, he didn't want the credit of helping others, he did it out of love and respect and to me that is what true charity is all about.
This PLACE (GRACELAND) should be a protected part of music history and also American history forever, I think that people will keep coming for years and years and years to come !
Elvis did lots of things for America to, he helped in a big way to avoid getting Polio (he took the vaccin in a tv show and that made the intrest for taking the vaccin to go up from 0,6 % all the way up to 80 % in 6 months), so in 6 months he got 79.4 % more of the American people take the Polio vaccin and shortly after it was eradicated from USA, he also helped in the figth to defeat Cancer by helping to build up St Judes children cancer treatment clinic by donating a huge amount of money to them, he also helped to build the Memorial over Pearl Harbour and many other things!

the colonel was a selfish pos but Elvis killed himself. not on purpose but he is to blame... Of course everyone around him who enabled him but he distanced himself from any friends who tried to help him with his drug problems... Its a tragedy of great proportions and whils this film covers very well the relationship between him and The Col... a lot of other important things aren't so well done
