Jamaal Wilkes is one of the greatest to ever play, and perhaps the most under-appreciated. They always talk about Wilkes being surrounded by great players. They rarely talk about the Golden State team, in which he and Rick Barry led several ordinary players to a world championship. On that team Jamaal often played out of position at power forward, while being listed on the roster as a F- G. That illustrates how great an all-around player Jamaal Wilkes was.
ARIZJOE Very good, maybe excellent complimentary player. 2nd banana at UCLA and Golden State, 3rd or 4th at LA. Type of guy you need to win, sure. But not the main man or even a really dominant 2nd star (Pippen, Drexler).
It's complementary player, and he was not that. He was second star at UCLA - but did not appear that way because of Wooden's system. He probably was more integral to that GS title than Barry. In LA, he had the good fortune to play with Magic and Kareem. There is no way that a member of the basketball HOF is complementary. FYI: John Wooden's stated favorite player - shooting, defense, rebounding - Keith/ Jamaal could do it all.
ARIZJOE Why did Golden State Warriors get rid of him the very next year after Wilkes won rookie of the year and helped win a NBA championship?... 🤔 That was weird.
The first time I ever saw Jamaal Wilkes was in the movie "Cornbread, Earl, and Me" (shown in my high school auditorium). And, in that movie, he was playing basketball. And, until I played NBA2K18 "L.A. (all-time) Lakers" mode, I never had any idea that he actually used to be a REAL NBA player. Guess I'm just young.
To those of you talking about how ugly the jumpshot was. Jamaal's "slingshot" was beautiful to watch, especially when it found nothing but the bottom of the net. The slingshot action was even more pronounced on the foul line.
It's crazy I read he had an unorthodox jump shot, but I shoot the same and it works perfectly fine hard for people to block and especially if you get enough lift and hang time. I always was a knock down shooter, but my cousin showed me to shoot like this. It takes awhile to get use to if you have been shooting a certain way your whole life, but it helps when being closed out on or guarded up close. Keep your eyes on the rim and follow through. It's a beautiful thing I know Jamaal feels the same way.
Not sure I follow some of the comments here... from the old games I've watched on NBA TV this guy was impressive. He hit his outside shots, passed, rebounded, played defense- won four rings, was praised by coach Wooden... Any team in any era would love to have a small forward who shoots over 50% from the floor (during his prime). It's very tough to find that kind of efficiency and skill.
God...I remember watching many of these games live as a kid. I was a Sixers fan and hated the Bucks, the Celts and the Lakers with a passion. Silk was as pure as honey and I remember being scared every time he went up to shoot with that funky shot of his because it ALWAYS seemed to go in. I suppose every generation will say it but the quality of basketball in the late 70s and the 80s was the best there ever was. Check out replays of those Erving (Sixers) v. Marques Johnson (Bucks) playoff series - obviously any of the Sixers, Celts, Lakers series were legend...high scoring fluid basketball with all time quality ballers. The players were all so skilled and teams seemed to function as a unit so much better than the degraded game that it is today.
Gus Levy Why did Golden State Warriors get rid of him the very next year after Wilkes won rookie of the year and helped win a NBA championship?... 🤔 That was weird.
Man! You said it all. The 70's, and 80's were simply off the chain. Early to mid 90's was pretty darn good also. The league is water down now, like flag football, compared to tackle. You are right, fundamentals almost completely gone.
He was perfect for Magic Johnson & the Lakers. Played good D & could score & was not a problem on that team. He was Pre James Worthy, the Chris Bosh of the 2010-14 Heat, Dennis Johnson of Boston 1984 & 1986 Celtics or the Current Klay Thompson of the Dubs anyone who thinks he wasn't hall of fame material is Crazy. Ask Duncan how valuable Ginobili was to those last 3 championships, especially 2005
Dude no one has said that his shot was ineffective his "shot" was good but yes like you said his shot was unorthodox and not textbook. That's why some ppl here are saying his shot is ugly.
In my opinion you can have the craziest, fastest, coolest dribbling skills and the most beautiful jump shot that is right from the text book, but at the end of the day if you can do all of that but can't make a single shot it's no good.
@Commonsense11111 There aren't very many teams today that wouldn't have a prime Wilkes in their starting lineup. In this era its a lot easier to get seperation because the game isn't as physical. His efficiency would be off the charts.
Would've been even better if Magic one ROY the year they won their first title together. They would've been the only two to complete that feat. And everyone that plays 2K🤣🤣
When Jamaal Wilkes played in the 1980 finals in game 6,he scored 37 points right behind Magic Johnson who had 42 points and 16 rebounds because Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had a sprained ankle. My point is Jamaal “Silk” Wilkes still did what he had to and the Lakers were the Champions!!!
Now don't hate, the level of skill and athleticism as a whole is a lot more in the nba. Now thats not saying he wouldn't, we don't know. We can't compare two things if they've never played.
irrelevant, i'm talking 'bout this kid. They need to up the standards of the hall of fame at this rate even Kwame Brown could get into the hall of fame
This is my opinion, on Jamaal Wilkes' shot. Ugliness is a matter of opinion, so to some people, Jamaal Wilkes' shot is ugly, but to others it might be this amazing work of art. I personally, think that his shot is unconventional, and maybe a tad bit "ugly", but what works, works. Look at Rick Berry. His free throw was very different, but he had a great FT percentage.
It's crazy I read he had an unorthodox jump shot, but I shoot the same and it works perfectly fine hard for people to block and especially if you get enough lift and hang time. I always was a knock down shooter, but my cousin showed me to shoot like this. It's a beautiful thing I know Jamaal feels the same way.
i think it is blockable. just as easy to block as any other shot. he still releases the ball from infront of his head he just brings it back behind his head, so if you actually put pressure and jump high enough you'd be able to block it. just in my opinion.
J wilkes game wouldn't translate today, too slow on the put up and his skill was avoiding contact, in today's game it's drawing contact (ugly) but wow he was so fun to watch like an artist out there. His moves were so graceful but smooth it damaged his opponents psyches to see him be able to put on a display like that. Too bad we lost him. The game was better back then.
it was unblockable. The jumpshot wasn't "ugly" it was just unorthodox, untextbook, but because he wound it back behind his head the only way you could block it was if you were to lean into him which would cause a foul. He doesn't do it just because it works for him, he does it because jamaal was one of the smartest players to ever grace the hardwood.
It's crazy I read he had an unorthodox jump shot, but I shoot the same and it works perfectly fine hard for people to block and especially if you get enough lift and hang time. I always was a knock down shooter, but my cousin showed me to shoot like this. Kind of cool that he had a nice productive career even though his outside shot breaks all the rules of shooting. He kind of goes around his head and shoots with 2 hands. Ugly as can be, or a thing of beauty depending on perspective.
I thought his shot was the coolest on the planet. I sometimes use to imitate his shot, and had some success with it. Silk was one hell of a basketball player!
that's exactly what he meant by ugly bro. obviously you do it because it works for you. the way you shoot usually is something you pick up when you are young.
and i'm sure your jumpshot is amazing. If so you should join the nba afterall this guys jumpshot is horrendous and somehow he was a three time all star and four time nba champ.
I'm not sure that it was unblockable, because the final part of the movement is the same of all the jumpshots and personally i think that there are 2 ways in which a shot can be unblockable: or your movement is very quick (Ray Allen) or you release the ball at a great height (like the skyhook)..the problem is that with that shooting form you need the double of the time to complete the shot..maybe it was unblockable 30 years ago, I think that today it wouldn't work..
It seems to me the NBA is very vanilla now. Players seem to copy each others techniques. Back in the day you could distinguish a player by the way he played the game. Players had their own style. Maybe it's just me! lol
I'm sorry but guys like him wouldn't have much of a chance today. He has great athleticsm but not enough to perform like he did in his days in this modern era
Jamaal Wilkes is one of the greatest to ever play, and perhaps the most under-appreciated. They always talk about Wilkes being surrounded by great players. lawreneph: He played 3 or 4 years with GS. Then went to the Lakers. GS was going through ownership changes. Dr. Buss had the dough.
ARIZJOE Lakers won on that deal.
So Silky smooth!
They Killed Cornbread!!!
OL ... CORNBREAD EARL AND ME...... NOW THATS TRIVIA... HOW MANY YALL REMEMBER HIS FIRST MOVIE
Cornbread, Earl, and me. LOL
That's how I will always remember him.
never seen a jumpshot like that. I like it.
To those of you talking about how ugly the jumpshot was. Jamaal's "slingshot" was beautiful to watch, especially when it found nothing but the bottom of the net. The slingshot action was even more pronounced on the foul line.

...Smooth as caramel that Wilkes jumper was. A thing of beauty.

As Chris Smoove would say: " That jumpshot is freaken CHEESE !"
So underrated. People talk about Magic's game 6 against Philly but people forget how big Jamaal was that game.
God...I remember watching many of these games live as a kid. I was a Sixers fan and hated the Bucks, the Celts and the Lakers with a passion. Silk was as pure as honey and I remember being scared every time he went up to shoot with that funky shot of his because it ALWAYS seemed to go in.

people dont realize your form doesnt matter. if it goes in, can get you points and is comfortable for you. theres no need to change it
the NBA should make some sort of hall of fame game where they all have to wear the old throwback jerseys lol, that would be pretty cool
Bad boy for sure
I thought Jamaal's shot was a thing of beauty.
It's crazy I read he had an unorthodox jump shot, but I shoot the same and it works perfectly fine hard for people to block and especially if you get enough lift and hang time. The thing is.. I don't think his jumpshots are ugly at all. On the contrary, I like them.
loving these career hi-light uploads! Keep em coming!! x
Like u can shoot!!
that shooting form lead him to NBA!!
Had a great mid range jumper
WELL DESERVED HONOR. CONGRATULATIONS SILK!!!!!
In my opinion you can have the craziest, fastest, coolest dribbling skills and the most beautiful jump shot that is right from the text book, but at the end of the day if you can do all of that but can't make a single shot it's no good.
You guys can say anything you want about his jumpshot cause his jumpshot will always beat yours
@Commonsense11111 There aren't very many teams today that wouldn't have a prime Wilkes in their starting lineup. In this era its a lot easier to get seperation because the game isn't as physical. His efficiency would be off the charts.
his jumpshot isnt ugly. i personally think it fits the style of play in that era. fast, quick, with a dash of funkiness.
ill let it slide this time but when the ads are more that 15secs and you cant skip them i usually ex out
Jamaal is the only NBA player to win "Rookie of the Year" award and a title.
Would've been even better if Magic one ROY the year they won their first title together. They would've been the only two to complete that feat. And everyone that plays 2K🤣🤣
so true so true my friend
happy to see "the silk" again - he used to score like a painter, quite unusual today, plenty of blacksmiths and carpenters...
magic hightlights D:
0:35 He kind of looks like Grady from Sanford and Son.
Silk Wilkes
Coop-A-Loop, Magic lob to Michael Cooper
Congrats Jamaal Wilkes on having your Laker jersey retired! #52!
WTH are those people sayin he's got an ugly jumper? That release and form are so sexy!
the game has evolved obviously...so has almost everything in life from that era compared to now...no need to compare lol.
I don't like the Lalers but that Big 3 of Kareem, Wilkes and Magic was really nice
Now don't hate, the level of skill and athleticism as a whole is a lot more in the nba. Now thats not saying he wouldn't, we don't know. We can't compare two things if they've never played.
I met him in Las Vegas at a convention in 2008 or so, very nice guy.
jamaal wilkes and that 17 ft layup
irrelevant, i'm talking 'bout this kid. They need to up the standards of the hall of fame at this rate even Kwame Brown could get into the hall of fame
Oh very well. But tell me. Was one of the kids in that movie a young Larry Fishburne?
sherwinfitz Cornbread Earl & Me
Yes, that was him.
Реально Шикарно Забивает
He's Cornbreadddd, He's Cornbreaddddd
Carlos Boozer took his shot.
Best looking Jumpshot ever.
Well u see they do the hall of fame every year, so they need people to fill it up some how.
I would agree. And Wilkes benefitted from that mentality.
I shoot like him and i schooled the best shot blocker in our place.
It's crazy I read he had an unorthodox jump shot, but I shoot the same and it works perfectly fine hard for people to block and especially if you get enough lift and hang time. Jamaal Abdul-Lateef
No disrespect to any1 though. Just saying because people believe some people shouldn't be in it and I understand. Just giving my assumption.
his shooting form isn't that bad actually, other than putting the ball behind his head, its all standard stuff
I was waiting to see that silky smooth shooting form in slow motion. Didn't happen. Can't do a highlight on silk without that as the main focus.
it ain't ugly if it goes in!
Cornbread Earl and me brought me here
Who cares.....
As long as you can make the shots it doesn't really matter
Yes he would.
complete player - remember they called him Silk
smooth ;0
I was wondering if that was really his shooting form in 2k, and now I realize it’s true to form
No travel on 0:58, he passed the ball
i think it is blockable. just as easy to block as any other shot. he still releases the ball from infront of his head he just brings it back behind his head, so if you actually put pressure and jump high enough you'd be able to block it. just in my opinion.

he’s the dream to his mom and a the man to his pop he’s and idol to kids he loves soda pop he’s cornbread!!!
That move on 1:14 was the precursor of today's delayed step
it was unblockable. Pacquiao imitated his shooting form
thats the whole point.
Jamaal and I are birthday buddies lol
0:39 my guy change his privote foot 5 times before he shot the ball. lol
Just like Adrian Dantley. It would've been frustrating as hell trying to deal with Dantleys fade-away.
Actually, anyone can creep in from behind and block it. If you're talking about defenders from in front of him then yes it is unblockable
I’m named after him. Yep.
Looked like Magic Johnson highlights.
it's not an ugly jump shot it's unorthodox. he has all the most important elements of a jump shot balanced, facing basket and follow through.
It's crazy I read he had an unorthodox jump shot, but I shoot the same and it works perfectly fine hard for people to block and especially if you get enough lift and hang time. I always was a knock down shooter, but my cousin showed me to shoot like this. Wilkes will be remember as Laker.
They are retiring his number this year with shaq
and they are making a statue for kareem outside of staples next to the magic statue
GO LAKERS
it doesnt matter if your jumpshot as long as it goes in
Kind of cool that he had a nice productive career even though his outside shot breaks all the rules of shooting. He kind of goes around his head and shoots with 2 hands. Ugly as can be, or a thing of beauty depending on perspective.
I thought Lonzo Ball's shot was ugly. His was on a whole other level.
I thought his shot was the coolest on the planet. I sometimes use to imitate his shot, and had some success with it. Silk was one hell of a basketball player!
@@ramonalejandrosuare what about Jack Sigma's shot, this guy could lite it up also.
career highlights of magic Johnson?
Haven't really seen many behind the back shooters in the NBA.
They just has to put a 70s song in the background
honestly this dude would get cooked in todays nba lmao
lakers' lay up time.....o yeeeaaaahhhh
that's exactly what he meant by ugly bro. obviously you do it because it works for you. the way you shoot usually is something you pick up when you are young.
and i'm sure your jumpshot is amazing. If so you should join the nba afterall this guys jumpshot is horrendous and somehow he was a three time all star and four time nba champ.
they are Dec 28
Only 1:45 of footage...?
stop saying his jumpshot is ugly!! that jumpshot made him a three-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion.....what does your jumpshot made you?!
Dont tell me that im the only one that saw him travel from 0:37-0:45. First moved left foot, then right.
It seems to me the NBA is very vanilla now. Players seem to copy each others techniques. Back in the day you could distinguish a player by the way he played the game. Players had their own style. Maybe it's just me! lol
this is who inspired derek fisher's jumpshot..
I'm sorry but guys like him wouldn't have much of a chance today. He has great athleticsm but not enough to perform like he did in his days in this modern era
well i see alot of people sayin " ugly jumpshots " well its unblockable
Wow
Silk!!!
defender at 0:05 is #23 on chicago haha
