    As a young artist I was always obsessed with trying to get a hold of the exact same softwares, sketchbooks, markers, pens and pencils my favorite artists used because I had the mindset that it would “magically” give me the same results. Even now I was tempted to drop cash on Z brush because I love the way these characters look specifically. In the end it’s about HOW one uses the tools and what fits best into your workflow. A skilled artist can create awesome things with anything! Even pancake batter 😂

    Blender Sculpting tips for the comment section because I love you all!
    Shift + R = show your remesh resolution
    CTRL + R = will remesh with said resolution (this will weld individual mesh pieces together into one mesh piece also)
    hover over separate mesh object in sculpt mode and press "D" to work on a said different mesh piece. (this one is such a game changer but requires more recent blender versions)
    CTRL while brush is subtract mode or cuts into the mesh
    Shift while brushing is "almost" always the smooth brush.
    Install the "Mesh > Extra Objects" add-on (its a default add on you just have to activate it in preferences) and use the Quadsphere instead of subdividing a cube. (Saves time and even better, add the Quadsphere to your "Q" quick favorites menu and you can drop those bad boys in a snap!)
    G = Grab brush (move brush)
    Learn face sets and masking! They will come in super handy (also, box hide is great) There are pie menus to help you speed up these tools too! (I can't remember if you have to enable them in preferences or not, sorry)
    press A (in sculpt mode ofc) and move your brush cursor and the Masking pie menu comes up (great for quickly smoothing/inverting etc)
    press W (in sculpt mode ofc) and move your brush cursor for the Face Sets pie menu.
    E key will bring up the stroke menu which is great to switch to curve and draw very precise lines or cuts or patterns
    Mesh Filter is a great tool (surface smooth is lazy mode!)
    Don't forget that there are transform tools in Sculpt Mode! You can use them with masking etc to quickly move and pull out shapes, resize or even rotate bits.
    Screwed up your symmetry, no problem, just go to the N panel or active tool tab and scroll down to symmetry, pick the axis along which you want (usually +X to -X for me) the hit symmetrize and don't forget to turn your X symmetry back on afterwards.
    Tab (from sculpt mode) to go between Edit/Sculpt which is great for quickly adding mesh objects and jumping back to sculpting (hopefully adding objects in sculpt mode is something Pablo will add at some point) holding Tab for the mode pie menu is also a great way to quickly navigate.
    1, 3, 7 keys on your numpad on your keyboard are great and FAST shortcuts to front/left/top views (holding CTRL and pressing these will give you back/right/bottom!)
    The brushes can be a little strong (I find this great for the grab/move brush) but it can take some getting used to the finesse of the brushes in blender.
    F = brush size
    Shift + F = brush strength
    You can go to the brush drop down for the clay strips brush and bump up the tip roundness and lower the strength a bit and it will perform really close to the clay buildup in zbrush!

    I just started sculpting this spring, and I love watching your work as inspiration for what’s possible with enough time and practice. Then I look at my own work and face palm. :p

      antialias is what gives a 3d view a smoother look so edges don't look pixelated but comes at the cost of a loss in some performance

      @@tux_the_astronaut not just 3d, antialiasing smooths jagged lines. It does this by rendering at a higher resolution and finding average pixel values to smooth out the line so it does not look jagged.
      antialiasing is fundamentally a 2d thing because it happens only on the 2d screens we view on.

      Anti aliasing is so important in cg to remove pixelated edges. If you play video games, there's always an anti aliasing setting

    I'm extremely new to blender, and started getting into it pretty recently as I have no knowledge of 3D sculpting yet. I floated about the internet and found this video, and it has motivated me and made me more hopeful for any future pieces I will have, as I plan to make images sort of like the one displayed in the video, but purely parts of the body as to help understand the way the system in blender works. This was a huge help to coast around what I can do :)

    I am sure i wont be the first person to share this sentiment... but while I have found your channel an invaluable tool in this last year even though I do not use zbrush, I have to say I am more than a little happy to hear there will at least be more blender videos.
    This isn't just because I want to see you use blender (which I do) for someone like myself who just cannot afford zbrush, this lends a little more validation to the notion that blender is enough to create the work I want to make, I just need to stick with it.
    So, I definitely appreciate that.. and of course... I'll also be looking forward to blender related content... :)

      Their is a saying that goes, tools make it not the craftsman. Loosly quoted.
      I have seen someone make a 2d sketch the likes of masters, with microsoft paint. People have made whole movies with blender. Enjoy your life and express your true self, we live in a time where you can not only make studio quality remders for free, you can print and paint them and hold them in your hand! AMAZING! Wake up people, and go be your true selves!

      @@WhoIsJohnblack While it is true, tools do not make the craftsman, I have had a 20 year career drawing comics on paper before touching an iPad, still theres no denying how much the iPad improves the work flow over paper, the same is true here.
      This can also be said in a number of creative areas, especially if it is something you do as a living, and not just for the joy of creating.
      My comment was far more a commercial one than an artistic. If you want to get in to 3d Modelling... You have to hae 3D modelling software, no only that, you have to have the tools to run that efficiently.
      If you want to do 3d sculpting for a career and on an industry level, Zbrush is still the expected standard. And while it is true, whole movies have been made in blender, game assets created in Blender, both commercial and personal, the vast majority still are not.
      My comment was far more discussing the growing number of people that are bringing tools like blender, accessible to most, in to the commercial market space so that people do not have to find someway of affording something like Zbrush just to be able to learn and then make roads in.
      So while it is a nice notion to "wake up and be your true self", if you want to do it commercially, you also have to wake up and realise there are indusries and standard practices to contend with, whether we like it or not.
      So yes, its true, tools do not make the craftsman, but tools are still needed, and companies still expected certain skill sets.

      @@neilgooge Hey Neil, great insight, thats super cool that you have been drawing comics old school, I want to learn but find it hard with the lack of time. I have been part time graphic designing and full time teaching and working in the electric field. Its tough to find time for blender lessons and watching the great teach comic drawing. There is so much available for free I wish we had back in the 80's. Plus as you stated some of these things are accessible to the layman.
      I agree with your statements, I don't know modeling standard but I assume zbrush = photoshop in my field. My comment was merely to inspire. I hope you didnt take offense.
      Maybe one day you can draw me a comic character some time in exchange for a logo what do you say? 😁

    I'm not sure why anyone would imagine you couldn't in this case, Blender has been around for nearly 30 years. It's not exactly some cheap freebie "app" that just got going a year ago. My personal issues with the software aside, it's actually obscenely good for something that's completely free to use.

    Honestly Blender is an amazing tool and it truly is a swiss army knife where you can do so many thing but at the same time its has a very steep learning curve and not only that but it's taken for it to get where it's at and it still has a lot more work to be done which will just make it even better

    the best discription of blender (in my opinion) is that its not the swiss knife of 3D, but more the swiss army tool box of 3D, it has all the tools that are almost as good as the other ones in one easy to reach place, and all work with the same logic, the only difference being that if you choose your apps/tools on your own you can choose the slightly better ones only problem being that they dont all fit in the same box.

    I found when working in low resolution sculpting to remesh to the next level shift-R visualises it and ctrl-R applies remesh. Sorry for backseat sculpting. Its cool to see your workflow and the end result is gorgeous as usual

    You can use vertex painting in an experimental mode of Blender . It’s so much smoother and faster and I enjoy the results way more. You can then bake them onto the lower poly model as a base mesh!
    I’d really give it a try, it’s definitely different. Nice work as always!

    the best thing about the compositor is that you can use information about the scene like the depth, the different render passes and even masks for each object in the scene, and combine them with any node

    Something worth noting about blender compositing is you can utilize the information of the models themselves. Granted, it doesn't solve your gripes, but it's potentially something you can utilize to get masks/whatever for Photoshop. (I'm not very well versed in compositing, but I'm certain you can find tutorials on the blender specific things somewhere.)

    To make the Shrinkwrap work like you wanted you just need to swap the Mode from "Nearest Surface Point" to "Project" and enable the "Negative" direction as well.
    I've been using this for a long time and always works like a charm. :)

    You say, you wouldn't use a Swiss Army Knife to open a tin if you already have an electric can opener. But if you know how to use a Swiss army Knife, you don't need to buy an electric tin opener, and the knife can be used even when there is a power outage.
    As the saying goes amongst Scouts, campers and the bushcraft community "the more skills you have, the less tolls you need".
    Blender allows you to do (almost) the entire work pipeline in a single app. Also, there is no perfect porting, as you noted yourself after testing the sculpting feature. You can only get a lossless port between apps that natively use the same file format, aka only between same app and same version thereof, allowing you to work on different computers. If you have to port from Z-Brush to a texture app and then to a rigger app and then to an animation app and form there to a game engine, every port has some degree of loss or computation changes. With Blender, you get lossless and consistent results throughout the work flow because everything stays native in the same app.
    Sure, Blender is still not as good at any one tool as good as any specialised tool made specifically for the task, but for an all-in-one tool, particularly a free one, it is incredibly good, and it is catching up with the power and quality of the one-trick ponies with each new version.

    Lately I've been using Blender as a sketching program. I just really like the results I get out of Grease Pencil with my Wacom digitizer. I've also used it as a non-linear video editor, and of course sculpting and good ol' box modeling.

    You might already know this as you used blender for lighting befor, but blender allowes (allowed) you to use negativ light. Can be really helpful sometimes, if you want a specific shadow, etc.

      It still allows it, you just need to input the value yourself as the slider stops at 0.

    A little script that gives you the option to save textures when you save your scene (just a checkbox) would go a very long way in this workflow. It's also a very reasonable expectation given the experience in zbrush, Painter, 3D Coat, regardless of the history of the texture save implementation.

    I haven't used Maya for a few years, but i remember it either had a native tool, or a script i found somewhere, that let you select an input mesh and output mesh, then snapped selected vertices on the input mesh to the closest-point-on-surface of the output mesh; basically a shrink wrap that wasn't trash like shrink wrap. Surely Blender has a similar custom script that beats shrink wrap.

    11:32 actually here you could enable the auto smooth modifier and set at wich angle the mesh renders as flat and at wich it renders as smooth its extremly useful for things like this

    As someone who was only taught the 3ds Max/ZBrush/Topogun/Substance Painter workflow, I find Blender very, very confusing. Really can't comprehend it which is severely slowing down my working speed. I'd love to learn it, but it's just so complex

      It only seems more complex because it's basically got all of that functionality baked into one application. In reality, any given mode isn't significantly more complex than an equivalent standalone application (sometimes it's actually simpler). Just treat the different menu options as separate pieces of software that happen to be unusually well-integrated.

    Before I start the video, gonna guess yes. After the video: Yeah great looking character, Blender is a deceptively powerful tool but as he pointed out in the video it can suffer with performance issues later in the project, high poly count can make it stutter in sculpting that Zbrush can handle much better, but it's still a great tool.

    If you ever need to retopologize something from scratch, there's Retopoflow which is both on the BlenderMarket and Github. It has some very useful tools for creating better topology faster.

    You cannot beat free, open-source software in the long run.
    Blender, GIMP, Krita, Kdenlive etc....

      Only if the software gets big enough to take advantage of OSS advantages.
      Blender will eventually over-take the industry standard tools in every field, but that's only because it's gotten so big, has plenty of revenue streams from donors and studios funding development and providing their own code and features.
      Smaller open source projects rarely ever obtain the polish of similar proprietary applications, because they rely entirely on volunteers who still need to eat and do other shit. Thus, the work hours can only come from a handful of people with limited time. (Exception being if you can work out a business model early on)
      It's only once the software has widespread attention that the volunteer hours of an Open Source program grows exponentially. I remember hearing that a lot of the 2D animation stuff in Blender came from a specialized fork that someone made to be 2D-focused, and it was eventually merged into the main branch.
      Proprietary software would never be able to do that, because the volunteers and partnered vendors wouldn't have been able to directly edit the source code and request a merge-the only thing an animation studio can do today is ask nicely for the feature, or make plugins that may not work as well as directly integrating the features.

    Just as information, in my video game uni, we used Maya, 3ds max, Substance Painter and Zbrush, but I've heard my teachers complain a lot about not using Blender instead because it was much better and free. A lot of artists use it, so don't feel like you're working on a "cheap version" and can't be a professional because of the software you work on. Blender is awesome.

    I actually know 2 retopo addons which you might need! One is the quad remesher addon which gives absolutely beautiful topology from just clicking one button and the software addon lets you easily reuse topology from other models in a kind of soft body wrap

    I have to say I agree with your opinion. I actually switched from maya as my primary modeling tool to blender after giving it a try. I've tried to do the same with zbrush for the same reasons you've stated, but I just find sculpting in zbrush just feels nicer. I still sculpt in blender from time to time, but switch to zbrush when I need to. I am also hesitant to give up substance painter for my texturing, its just too good and easy for my needs. In the end I think its smart to use the right tool for the right job, and while blender has a ton of features, it isnt always the best to use, especially if you already have the appropriate apps available. Its still an impressive piece of software, and amazing that its free to use. Love it.

    Ever since you mentioned the GoB addon in a previous video, throwing meshes back and forth in between the programs depending on which has better tools for the situation has been my favorite workflow ever. Blockout the body in Zbrush, and throw it into Blender w/ GoZ. Blockout some hard surface armor then throw it back into Zbrush to detail the armor.
    Like some have said, I think a smaller project like a character bust can be fully created with Blender, but for a full high poly character workflow I think Blender might struggle (for now of course). What do you guys think?

    Nice render ! I wish you added in the description a list of the addons you've used, that way I don't have to re-watch the whole video when I want to remember about it. After all, there's so many addons for Blender

    Second: I think if you had painted the mask on the face just like you did before and separated and extracted that part and applied a solidify modifier to the mesh, you could get away with the thickness :)

    Blender is awesome and powerful been using it since I graduate collage for game and web back in 2008.used max and maya in school blender is just as good and free. the only thing I miss is the game engine it was pretty awesome!

    you can even use blender's compositor to prepare a exr file with extra passes with the file export node, to have more resources to composite in photoshop :) and also the denoiser is pretty decent and easy to use

    instead of using a mask you could duplicate the mesh and use the knife tool to cut the shape and take the edges and extrude in or use the solidify modifier.
