Island Packets are extremely well appointed below. Their wide beam, across all models relative to length, makes them the floating condos of the sailboat world. But these same below deck comforts make them unsuitable for Blue Water sailing in my opinion for several reasons. The layups may be robust, I don't know. However, they are definitely NOT heavy boats. Their displacement to length ratios are in the mid to low 200's and given their excessive beam, this would simply HAVE to be the case. Unlike heavier displacement boats, Island Packets sit on top of the water more than they do in it. If they sat deeper in the water like heavier boats ( and by that I mean boats with displacement to Length ratios in the mid to upper 300's or low 400's ), they would be extremely difficult to push through the water due to the wide beam. Now, the wide beam does have some advantages when coastal sailing or in protected waters. Due to the wide beam, the IP's carry great buoyancy outward from the center of the vessel. This means they stiffen quickly and will heel less than most boats as the wind pipes up to a point. However, in very heavy weather ( Storm conditions ), this now becomes a liability. In the event the boat suffers a knockdown, the boat will now have to overcome this great buoyancy oh her beam ends and it will make it very difficult to self right. More than likely she will turn turtle and stay there, This makes them unsuitable for Bluewater sailing. If I were still sailing in my native NYC area and boating primarily in Long Island Sound, Block Island Sound and Cape Cod, The IP would be a nice boat offering great accommodation and comfort and decent speed in light air.
I would be very hesitant about crossing an ocean in one though For that, a heavier displacement boat is needed. One with a narrower beam with more of a wine glass shape hull that stiffens as the wind pipes up not due to bouyancy in the beam ends, but due ballast and plenty of it, down low. Such a boat if knocked down will much more readily self right. Boats like like Pacific Seacraft, Valiant, Cape Dory and Cabo Rico to name a few, are of the type I refer to as Blue water boats. A Pacific Seacraft 37' for example has a positive range of stability of almost 150 degrees and while not nearly as wide as an Island packet is still very comfortable below and safer below in a storm. That great beam and roominess below just means you will be thrown further across the cabin when below in a storm. A narrower boat means you are always near one side and close to handholds.
I don't to sound like I am bashing Island Packet. They are VERY well finished boats, spacious below, comfortable to sail and hold their value well, but they portrayal of them by some as "Heavy, go anywhere, bluewater sailboats" is simply not accurate.

Great video, lovely boat. I would have preferred to have the specs role up at the end though as they obscured the view of the bow to stern walk through. Otherwise excellent. Will definitely add this boat and year to my list of boats to consider.

Absolutely brilliant boat, very beautiful boat, solid and a very nice protected cockpit and helm position, which is important, if you want this boat for cruising, where you will be caught up in all kinds of weather. I am not worried about the chain plates: Find me a product of a certain age, any, that does not have known issues. I for instance had a Kia Ceed, brilliant and reliable car, but the doors where hanging, which is a known issue on Kia Ceed on a certain age. Either you live with or fix it, and this boat is so well priced for it's condition, that you should have room for doing that inspection and fix the issue, if it is real in this boat. It may not even be though, because this is a fresh water boat!

Not cheap unless you consider how well equipped this boat is and how pristine and low milage. This boat has a genset and the boat equivalent of geothermal heating and cooling.
You might be able to get a new boat for twice as much money if you leave out many of the expensive features, but that new boat will actually have much higher maintenance costs and downtime.
For a couple that wants to cruise the world, this is an excellent way to go.

Just toured a Ip 439 at the Newport boat show I've always liked Island Packets quality but they just sail to slow, to beamy and the keel is massive. To me the star of the show was the Outbound 46, same high quality of the Island Packet but some more performance.

Love these boats but it would have been good to touch on the two big issues IPs are know to suffer from and that is the chainplates that were fiberglassed in and rust and the tankage that was steel and has to be cut out and replaced.
I am not sure if this model is affected by that but both are massive jobs.
    Good video!
    👍

Buyers should have a surveyor like K look at any big boat. They can offer information on upgrades, a second and tempered opinion, not hot to fufll a dream. Most important thing, know what it costs to keep it in the water and store year to year. Most are more interested in a place to bbq, an apartment on the water and cruise the coast. Ask, am I in that league as rates change. A local marina has a sign, If you can't afford your boat, don't leave it here. Not joking.

Also just a little thing, would have been nice if the sail bag was pulled out of the aft cabin, couldn’t really get any idea of the space in there which I would like to have seen, especially as the cockpit hangs down in there.
Personally I think it was a mistake to not have the cabin full width, I think it would have been a better trade for that bit of storage in the galley.
    Many thanks for the vid.

Would it be possible in future videos to break up your videos in to segments? If you look at a NautiStryles video for example, you can see that the progress bar is segmented into Exterior, Bow, Fly, Helm, Interior, Etc. I don't know how much extra work this is. But it's useful for the audience to be able to jump around and re-watch certain segments.

Doesn't sound like the chainplates have been replaced. IPs prior to the late 1990s are known to have used a lower grade of stainless steel for the chainplates, which degraded. It's an expensive fix.

nice safe slow boat in pristine condition for a couple or small family - fresh water boat, updated electronics, every amenity, bow thruster, davits, swim platform for ease of entry, just needs a water maker and good survey with special attention to tankage and chain plates. If those are all good I think it's priced about right.

Will this boat right itself if a wave rolls it over to upside down? Will it sink if its upside down in a storm?

    • @dougfaulkner6799
      @dougfaulkner6799 9 місяців тому

To try to answer your question, all heavy displacement boats will right themselves due to the heavy encapsulated ballast in the keel. Having said that, the chances of a total rollover is very slim. A knockdown is a far more plausible scenario, in which case the boat will recover with minimal or no damage. No vessel is designed to suffer a complete rollover without major damage to rigging and deck hardware. The forces are just too great but as i stated before, a complete rollover is extremely rare.

"Affordable" doesn't mean a 2m boat now available for 1m, it means a boat I can buy without going bankrupt. If that means less luxury and equipment, then so be it.
