  • Today we are talking to Sharon, an Army vet living in a pick up truck as a nomad. She has been on the road for 2 years and overcame a divorce, a midlife crisis, running out of money, shoulder surgery, a job she did not like and an empty nest. She sold everything filed bankruptcy and had a re birth of sorts. I am sure you will be inspired by her tenacity and determination! If she can do it, so can you!

    Very inspiring as I am going to be living in my truck without a shell at first. As a woman with my cat. Landlord made me get rid of my dog Apollo, I was able to find a home for him. I was given an ultimatum, either I leave or the dog goes. That's the hardest thing to do, besides loosing a daughter to cancer at 21yrs old. When I get int my Cargo Trailor, I will be getting another dog, and no one can ever tell me to get rid of him. As a Nomad, it will be my rules as to how I live. Thank you Bob!

    Perhaps on a seasonal or part-time basis, Sharon could camp host or fill a national park position, or something suitable to her liking and current situation. Doing so would help her build up a cash reserve to upgrade her vehicle and build an emergency fund. I'd imagine that additional foundation would provide a bit more stability, security and comfort. Wishing her health and peace in this new life.

    Toyota Sienna. Take the seats out, plenty of room, good on gas and you can hide in plain sight. Apartment complexes in town and free camping all over the country. That's how I did it for about a year during my divorce. Had a great time. I miss it actually.

    Hi Sharon, good job. . A shell is better than a tent, or a car, I bet. You have given me a business idea of building out old pickups with camper shells and selling them to new Nomads and hunters. I know how to increase the height of pickup shells by eight (8) inches. I bet that would help a lot.

    • @buzzanderson6217
      @buzzanderson6217 5 років тому +6

      That’s a great idea! I was also wondering if a car has a sunroof like a Toyota 4 runner if a person could climb through it and sleep above in a tallerish luggage rack converted to sleeping quarters thus keeping more of the interior of the vehicle open for other things. Also could be removable that way without having to cut a big hole in the roof.

      @andy-jac 5 років тому +3

      @@buzzanderson6217 - Yes, they are called roof top Cargo Carriers. The same idea would work on top of a pick-up shell. I have two service trucks with shells and I haul lots of wood, ladders, doors, and other heavy stuff up there.

      @Rene Gade have you thought of building your own truck camper shells? Lots of videos on YT and pictures on Pinterest. You could have some custom features not available on commercial shells...height, windows, interior finishes... Check out videos on YT of people that are building canoes and boats for techniques that translate well to building a light and strong camper shell. Good luck with your business.

      You are right...but sometimes people are put in situations where they can't keep up or they are put in these situations.
      I think you have to do whatever you have to do.....and you would have to walk in others shoes to understand that.
      The sound of living in a van, rv, etc. sounds great and then there are disadvantages as well.
      Depends on the person---I can't see it full time...cause I have to have some roots myself...and security in my life. Thank goodness I can still afford my home, but we never know what the future holds...so each to their own.
      I love the videos though..I can enjoy their experiences and the places like Im traveling with them. ☺
      I admire that they can do it full time...guess I am spoiled! I do like comfort.
      But I can also see or understand how it could be freeing at the same time.

    My grandfather's truck shell had a sliding window in the front and his rear truck window also had a sliding window, so you could climb through. Perhaps you could make that type of modification?

    • @jolanni7
      @jolanni7 5 років тому

      I'd rather stand and fight than to get stuck in that window, ha ha. No way I could fit through there and my limbs don't bend like they once did. How about keeping a gun in the truck? Is that an option? For some it isn't and I understand. Try to stay with friendlies in camp until that can be worked out.

    I started out in a 1979 F-150 back in the 80s. I got an aluminum top for free and put cardboard down in the bed. Just slept in there with blankets. Very comfortable. Thankfully now it is much easier to be a nomad with all the modern inventions we have available.

    You can actually put windows in the back window of the truck and the front window of the shell and can have a crawl through in case of the need to take off quickly.

    • @christhompson9486
      @christhompson9486 5 років тому +1

      There are rubber boots that will seal both windows. You remove the back glass from the truck and the front window of the camper. This way it is sealed from the weather and gives you a larger pass thru to the cab.

    Thanks Sharon, It reminds me of when I first started out, a lot younger and I would just pull over and throw out a blanket and pillow and go to sleep, sometimes having a loaded pistol under my pillow! Loved staying by a stream, with a camp fire, find a log and put my sleeping bag down and stay for the night! That was a few years ago! My bones don"t like it as much now. Since then I have had trucks, vans, box van, camper, and 4 Class A's .. Proud of you for stepping out and doing what you needed to do. For I have learned to take one day at a time, and each thing you need will come as you can. But most of all, you are free from so many encumbrances! When I'm hurting for money sometimes I have to remember that I need to relax more and enjoy the life I have, and not be so anxious. It can be hard to learn to relax. Stay committed to being a neighbor and don't be afraid to say hi to a camper that is close by. You probably by now have learned that there are more good people out her than bad. Good luck, and God Bless! Stay safe and hope to see you down the road! Rick

    Thank you for another great interview/tour Bob. So many variations to living a good life. At the end, the long shot provided a great example of location. To see rigs moving in the background and proximity of other camps was true representation of life in the desert. One is never really alone, you can camp as close or as far from people as desired.
