Are Germans Really Like This? What Berlin Expats Reveal

  • I interviewed three expats and a local from Berlin to get their take on German and Berlin culture.
Germans are often seen as rule-followers, reserved, and a bit quiet, yet straightforward and sometimes indirect. Some are into outdoor activities like hiking or extreme sports, while many enjoy a good drink.
In Berlin, the international vibe, unique party culture, and openness to foreigners and the queer community cause a different atmosphere.

5:32 As a Turk living in Berlin since 12 years, and as well as being have spent the first 20 something years of my life in Turkey, I agree with what she says. It is also disheartening to see that many Turkish people live a more peacefully life in Germany than in Turkey due to everyday aggression and stress. And specific to the traffic note, I just had an incident a couple of days ago that an aggressive driver harassed me for walking across the street (was green for me) because he had to wait for turning the corner and guess what, he rolls the window down and swearing at me in Turkish, probably thinking I would not understand. This was the moment I felt like moving far far away from my countrymen *again* after so many years. So sad...

Thank you for sharing your experience. I always appreciate when others share their thoughts. I hope that apart from that you have a better experience in Berlin.

The "outside Berlin" culture is the real German culture. We "outsiders" refer to the capital as "Spaceship Berlin", because it's completely different to the everyday life of the average German. Also there's actually no single German culture, but there are significant differences locally, but it all gets put in the same pot by people who have no real understanding of rural Germans. Even Bavaria can be divided into three distinct cultures: Old Bavarian, Franconian and Swabian. Similiar distinctions can be made in all the other parts of Germany, too. So yeah, dividing Germany in "Berlin" and "not Berlin" is the most Berlin thing to do imaginable. 😆

Although Berlin differs from “mainland”Germany, there’s something that connects all Gerries: Their undying love of bureaucracy. Obey the rules! Ordnung muss sein!

Berlin manages to be very un-german and quintessentially german at the same time, love it 🙂

Berlin is really not for everyone. It has lots of tough sides for living. But I'm curious about your reasoning.

@@TheMovementHub when I mention nothing..I mean it's also another unique city with interesting landscapes and such.. but just like any other metropolitan, diversity is a must. Therefore I am very familiar with each metro cities social construct. By understanding this, the world is my playground doesn't matter where I am, "when in Rome" ⚜❤🌟🤙
But if I were to pick..I do like Berlin a lot amongst the big metro I've been. ❤❤❤

I agree with you. The 'expat' term does not apply to her.

To the Turkish girl, everyone has the own personal opinions for sure, but every culture has its positives and negatives. All I hear is how she downgrades her own culture for every positive comment about Germany which is a shame.

I think she is just being critical, speaking the truth and being frank, kudos to her for being objective and calling out what she thought is wrong with her culture compared to other cultures, sounds like a smart objective critical woman.

Half the people in this video aren't German. So how exactly have they any moral to talk about germans.

@@jonathankorntgen3898 The whole point is foreigner talking about us? lol What would you expect a foreigner would do? That's the whole point! Theres no longer self respect. We've sold out to every and anyone. No identity no self-respect. We've become a people that accepts any kind of clown criticism because muh diversity. Even when, as in the video, it's pretty much parody.
