I'm playing part one right now. I'm waiting for part 2 to come to PS4 but that could be sometime next year, if it even does. I don't hear many people talk about that game at all. Even other top 10s don't mention it.
"Enjoy your meal" "You too" Lol my fiance just did that when we were at Walgreens. We were leaving and the lady behind the counter said "You guys come back" and my fiance said "You too" i was dying laughing. That reminded me of that immediately. Also, Gods Will Fall, Rogue Legacy, Neoverse are all great Roguelikes.
I urge everyone - who hasn't already - to give Enter The Gungeon a go. It's the title that made me fall in love with roguelites and is easily one of my favourite ever games.
After putting in 100+ hours into Enter the Gungeon, it’s hard for me to play other top down Roguelikes without comparing them to Gungeon. It just has everything I like (items, secrets, bosses, mechanics, endgame content, etc) and it controls so well. Hades is good too though
I have to admit, people praise Binding of Isaac quite a lot but I've never been able to get into it. Gungeon, Spelunky and Necrodancer are amazing tho.
Risk of Rain 2, Blade Assault, Ember Knights, Have a Nice Death, Little Noah: Scion of Paradise, Nightmare: The Lunatic, & Super House of Dead Ninjas are some of my favorites.
Nobody ever mentions Noita in these lists...and everyone should play noita. Build your own magic spells, mix potions, create traps....all in a pixel art where every pixel actually moves and reacts
I'm surprised that no one has brought up 20XX or its sequel, 30XX. The gameplay of Mega Man X married to a Rogue-lite structure that has -just- enough rogue to fit in comfortably with this list. Well worth checking out if you are a fan of the old Mega Man and Mega Man X games.
You could argue FTL is a roguelike more than a roguelite. You don't carry anything over between runs or unlock anything other than new ships to start fresh with on a new run. The new ships are far from strictly upgrades, a fair few of them are worse.
@@gakk8658 Yes, I was actually thinking about this myself. Also Enter the gungeon is pretty roguelike in this regard. Probably Vagante would be a nice competitor too I guess. But if you go with a slightly more strict definition, there are quite a few more key elements of the genre. So the relatively popular Berlin roguelike interpretation for example would simply rule out completely all of this entries.
If you mean that Isaac isn't a roguelike because you can blow coins out of the donation bin, you must be really strict with your definition. To me, a roguelite is any game that plays in runs, with permadeath, randomly generated terrain or at least enemies, but you can somehow benefit your next run in a major way. So by my definition, FTL and Gungeon are both Roguelikes.
@@koquarian I'm totally with you, for me the perma-progession is pretty much the defining part. And I really don't want to sound like some roguelike elitist, while from time to time I enjoy a round of DCSS or Shattered Pixel Dungeon, I enjoy roguelites much more.
Here's some more of my personal favs (as someone who pretty much only plays roguelikes): 1. Hadean Tactics, Autochess deck builder 2. Noita, a fast paced Finnish (PERKELE) Wizard platformer with insane physics engine 3. Oxygen Not Included, a colony sim based around surviving in a vacuum chamber 4. Dead Estate, a twin stick shooter with a distinct Newgrounds style and charm 5. Monster Train, a hellish deck builder based around lanes and loads of different playstyles And my personal fav 6. RImworld, harsh colony sim with very simple graphics and randomly generated events that give it a twist.
Nethack. If there were a direct lineage from Rogue, I'd say Rogue --> Hack --> Nethack. There are all sorts of skins/glyphs for those who aren't comfortable with pure ASCII (how I started). Whether it just be fancy glyphs, Falcon's Eye, or Vulture, there are ways to spruce it up, but the gameplay is what keeps the player coming back. You can have the most uber gear on, but one screw up leads to YASD (Yet Another Stupid Death), and you're back to the beginning after spending weeks on a single run. WazHack fits in a similar mold, but going back to Nethack is always enjoyable to someone who played it in the 90s.
Another feature of true Roguelikes is the turn based gameplay. Most of the games mentioned here aren't like Rogue at all. Moria, Angband, Nethack, ADOM, Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, Sil, Brogue and Infra Arcana are the real deal. Action games don't qualify as Roguelikes no matter how much random gen and permadeath they have.
I swear, the Rogue Legacy series never gets respect
Is that sarcasm? How much more respect does it need?

Personally, I think NetHack, Slash'Em and ADOM all belong on this list
Yes and most of the games she's presented don't qualify as true Roguelikes.

I would have put EtG at #2, second only to Binding of Isaac.
Dead cells enter the gungeon is good but it's so fucking hard
Don't know if FTL: Faster than Light is on here since I just started watching, but I'm here to recommend it, anyway.
"Spelunky" does sound fun, but it's got nothin' on "Liquid Ass" and "Ain't nobody got time for that!"

Really though, I bought the ultimate version of Issac and I couldn't get into it. I see the appeal and it definitely is "unique". Haha
Risk of Rain 2, Blade Assault, Ember Knights, Have a Nice Death, Little Noah: Scion of Paradise, Nightmare: The Lunatic, & Super House of Dead Ninjas are some of my favorites.
What’s the game in the thumbnail?
Enter the Gungeon.
@@koquarian Really? Is the thumbnail a promo image, or a screenshot of gameplay?
@@koquarian Nevermind. It’s a related game called Enter The Gungeon: House of the Gundead.

The unnamed character in spelunky is named Guy Spelunky
I was really hoping to see Rogue Legacy making the list. I had a great time beating it to as many "plus levels" as I could.
Does it count? I don't know, but if it's Rogue canon, I wouldn't say it's a Roguelike, but a continuation.

"Dungeon of the Endless" is a good rougelike that does combine a bit of tower defense and resource management.
Which is not a rougelike.
ziggurat and tower of guns are also 2 excellent roguelike`s
Dead Cells is awesome. Love that game
Great Video
FTL is one of the hardest games I've ever played and I'm an old school NES veteran.
Returnal sounds cool too bad it's a PS5 "exclusive" and as a result I will never play it.
Just like the Demon's Souls remake
If anyone hasn’t played Has-Been Heroes, BIG RECOMMEND!
Looks like everyone forgot about Nuclear Throne
It would have been nice if you had pointed out the difference between roguelites and -likes, as there is not a single actual roguelike on this list...

Not quite as obnoxious as metalheads debating which genre of metal is which. But still really obnoxious.

Yo. Jump³... NEON ABYSS
Play it now. Hate me later.
My favourite Rogue game is Star Wars: Rogue Squadron.
Added Slay the Spire to my wishlist. I like these card based roguelikes like Hand of Fate.
It's really, REALLY better than hand of fate
@@SpyanLord I'll find out next time steam has a sale.
Gungeon is by far my favourite
Is minecraft hardcore a rouglike
No Ror2? Alright.
I'm no mad, I'm just disappointed.
Like spike for our fave video game channel!
Isaac’s mother is the videogame equivalent of “EVERYTHING IS UNGODLY! SHE IS NOT A CHRISTIAN!” woman.
Who's this Lou Pierro I'm hearing about
I thought it was roguelite
Steamworld Dig 1 & 2 look far better than Spelunky.

Rogue Legacy always getting overlooked :(
The Binding of Isaac beats all of them especially Repentance!
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon is probably the only roguelike I’ve ever played

This is irrelevant without 20xx(rogue-like meets Megaman)
Dead cells is superb
