If I do a flat serve, I don't get very good percentage, since I am not a tall person. So for first serve, I still throw the ball slightly behind and hit an aggressive kick serve, something between a kick and flat serve so I could get more speed and depth. That tends to improve my first serve percentage and set me up for the next shot. Occasionally I also got aces when I hit the right spots.
Many pro's get at least 1000 rpm on their first serve and as high as 3000 rpm with players like Sampras. No one hits a true flat serve (even tall players) because the percentage will be too low.
@tijgertjekonijnwordopgegeten I think just the pronation will impart a little top spin even if you intend to hit flat. What I meant is the difference between hitting a first serve like Medvedev and Edberg. If I try to do it like Medvedev, my percentage would be like 20%.
Great lesson. I notice that you look over your shoulder at the ball by bringing the tossing arm up really close to your face, which great players like Federer also do. Is that something you recommend? I want to learn that, but it seems like you have to look passed your tossing arm, which is a bit tricky. Any tips on that?
Such clear and concise explanations. Can’t wait to show my son these techniques. Thank you.
