During the 1920s Gene Autry worked briefly as a telegrapher at the Frisco Depot. He later transferred to Sapulpa and then to the station in Chelsea. It was there that he was discovered by Will Rogers. While awaiting the next train, he noticed Autry’s guitar and asked him to play a tune to pass the time. Rogers was so impressed that he mentioned Autry on his national radio show and from there, Autry became one of the biggest country-western stars of the time. Later, Autry would return to Bristow, where he would broadcast a radio show from the radio station in the Roland Hotel Building.
Beverly and Karl White were friends and business partners for a time Beverly in the real estate business and Karl had a fascinating vintage fishing tackle museum just down the road from the barn. Historians of the area told me that the lumber that needed to be bent in the original building of the barn was taken to a nearby creek and soaked and bent at the creek site. I think it also took some heat to heat the lumber after it was soaked. That had to be quite a project in those days. I can't imagine the craftsmanship involved. Sure brings back good memories. Stay safe and havacudun Russ.
Thanks for highlighting this awesome stop on The Mother Road, just E. of Edmond, Oklahoma in Arcadia. The nearby beautiful Lake Arcadia has RV, dry camping, all watersports. A nice area for R&R. Thanks and Safe Journey.
Thank you Russ for taking us into the little Red Barn on the highway and biway. What a beautiful little place of our history, and I love the two seater with the catalogue. LOL And that train. My uncle was a break man so he sat up on one of those seats and watched for bearings that were running into trouble. I love a train as the sound of the Prairies still brings goosebumps to my arms. I am an old prairie girl. It must get in your blood. LOL thank you so much for keeping us sane and taking us along with you Russ. Carolyn and Colin Hogarth Osoyoos Canada....Bless you and goodness stay safe please too all of you the viewers too....
I really enjoyed seeing the Round Red Barn. Nothing I imagined it to be like. Especially the second floor looking up to the ceiling. The lumber used to construct it, & the way it was constructed left me in awe. OMG that was a tall ceiling. The hole? Wow the hole? I have no idea for that area. Not a clue.
16:40 Gene Autry was raised in southern Oklahoma. There's a town in the south central part of the state named after him. He was a telegraph operator in that train depot before he became famous.
@@thunderbird97 ...Well, I’ll be! I’m in my mid-70s. When I was young,, we had a one-holer outhouse...we was por’...that’s very broke. Times were hard and not much money so we couldn’t afford a 2-holer. We thought we were rich when we got indoor plumbing, lol. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Russ. Great video. I really appreciate the work that goes into the small town Americana museums. It truly takes a village to put these pieces of History together for others to enjoy👍
Good morning Sir, yesterday evening I have found your vlog, and yeah, it's absolut worth to follow you. Some of the places you have visited, my wife and I have seen them too. And, you drive a Mercedes Sprinter. Thanks for that, and I hope you are satisfied with the car.I'm now retiered, I have worked esspecially in the van factory in Düsseldorf/Germany for 44 years.Have a save trip, and thanks for the great pictures.👍🇺🇸Greatings from Germany
Great Americana history. Hubby's grandfather was a RR Conductor. Would love to see train travel like they have in Europe come back to the US. Loved seeing inside train car. Used to ride train to go from Houston to Dallas to visit grandparents but don't remember much since I was a little kid back then.
Thank you Russ, for a nice trip through small town America. I don't blame you for wanting to get out of the storm area ( Wizzard of OZ & all that). It was great seeing the train museum, which I believe was more of a town museum. But it was a nice uplifting video as usual. Thank you again.
Hey Russ how are I see one of my grandkids wrote on one of your video thay just love your videos they been watching for too years now thank you for all you do sir much Respect travel well lance and family
Hi Russ. You're traveling pretty much to route we traveled west a few weeks ago. Loved Pops and the Red Barn. We missed the train museum though. Always more to see. Enjoy your travels and we'll keep watching even though we're on the road ourselves. Maybe we'll see you in Quartsite this winter God bless. 👍👍😁🙏
The outdoor toilets are known as a "two-holer" or "one-holer". My grandparents had a one-holer. My wife's parents had a two-holer, but she had a bigger family. 😂
So you do a video about visiting a round barn that's a tourist attraction in Oklahoma, and you don't explain why they built a round barn ..... (and it's an interesting reason).
RUN TO THE ROUND BARN, THEY CAN'T CORNER US THERE ! ! ! The inside of the roof looks like a woven basket. I lived my life of 65 years, here in Oklahoma but I've never been there. Shame on me. Too much stuff on the wall (first floor) to actually be able to see the barn.

Bristow is my hometown. My Mom and Dad are huge fans.
Oklahoma, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain
And the wavin' wheat can sure smell sweet
When the wind comes right behind the rain
👍👍 Yes, American History.
Knowing you're in the round barn looking at a model of the round barn, you have to feel you've come full circle!
Cool round barn. Interesting small towns. Thanks Russ.

THIS WAS FUN
That round barn was designed/built with the idea that it would survive Oklahoma's many tornados. Looks like the idea works!

Great history at both stops. All I could think of was that song Happy Trails to you...and that's not Gene Autry! No wonder I'm in need of coffee.
1:25: The surname Vrana on this monument originates in the Czech language - it means Crow.
I was just out at the Round Barn and Pop’s today… but I live about 16 miles away. :)

Round buildings are not affected by wind. It cannot knock it down.
Nice caboose! Ah, that came out wrong...

Get your kicks on Rt 66
Go to Gene Autry Oklahoma and you will see the Gene Autry Museum. It is massive. You will be shocked 😲

I rode in one from Grand Rapids to Ravenna michigan
It looks like the current day 3D printed structures, that will soon be all the rage
So how are the Airtabs working out? Are they helping in the wind?

Round Barns weren't they used for Draft Horses? How many clydesdales can fit in there?
Do you ever take time to read the info?
South and East they don't have storms? Bet they wouldn't agree. :-)
14:50-‘And the operator says 40 cents more for the next three minutes….’
I think those envelopes were sewing needles.
I think these are old ice houses but I could be wrong
Definitely not a square when you're at the round barn :-)
