    Hagrid's normally ruddy face refers to his flushed look, often indicating someone who drinks quite a lot. You would see high color on his cheeks (assuming they weren't covered in hair) and nose. The parchment look is the equivalent of someone turning as white as a ghost.

      I was baffled they did not get that. English isn't even my first language and I was like, yes, that totally makes sense. Hagrid usually has a bit of a red face, maybe from a bit of drinking but more likely just from doing physical work and being outside a lot.

    It's always good as a British person listening to you discuss British topics for a long time that British people understand straight away. This time it was listening to you discussing exams and what they equate to.
    OWLs are GCSEs which British students do at that age. They used to be known as O-Levels (ordinary levels) which is no doubt where JK Rowling got the influence from. You typically do about 9 subjects with English, Maths and Science being compulsory. Education is compulsory to this point or at least it used to be.
    NEWTs are A-Levels (advanced levels), which students will study 3 or 4 topics depending on what they're good at and what they might want to study at university. Grades in A-Levels determines acceptance into university. Not everyone does A-Levels, other options are available, especially if you don't intend on going to university.

      I'm going to be the typical Scot in this thread correcting the English (assumed) person that not every British person takes GCSEs or A-levels.
      GCSEs and A-levels are part of the English education system. Wales, I think also take them. Northern Ireland presumably have a derivative of the Irish leaving certificate.
      Scotland has National 5s currently previously were intermediate 2s then before standard grades then o-grades as the equivalent of English GCSEs and Highers done as equivalent of A-levels but done in 1 year rather than 2.

      Never liked Ron and Hermione as a pairing. I'm not saying it should have been Harry because I do like him and Ginny together, but Ron and Hermione just don't fit. I've never understood what Hermione sees in Ron that's so appealing. Ron isn't a bad person or anything, but their personalities just don't go together. A lot of people who are oppressed with this pair will use the argument "Well opposites attract" but that can only go so far and it really doesn't work as well as they think it does to begin with. I don't really know who would have made a good fit for Hermione, but it isn't Ron.

    On Draco: His grudge isn't against Buckbeak or even Hagrid in general, it's the idea of Hagrid. Hagrid is obviously not what Draco was raised to view as "a proper wizard" and so by getting any victory against him is for his ideals - however it's more than that. It's literally just to bother Harry. He's doing something Harry cannot stop, in his eyes, and he's obviously bothered. It's an attack on Harry in a political way, the same way Lucious acts, but on such a small scale. And Lucious helping is the grooming education of hate, he's probably proud of Draco for it.

      Draco insulted Hagrid within minutes of his first meeting with Harry and it was the moment Harry was sure he didn't like him. Draco has been given an impression of Hagrid that's very belittling before he even started school. I agree with you that Draco hates the very idea of him.

      Ware it comes to Parvarty and the Divination teacher (I can't say the name much less spell it) did you consider. The teacher must be aware that she is not good at Divination hence the airy fairy voice and silly predictions all the time. To keep her job she needs results (as in people passing the class) and people not dropping her class. Parvarty and Lavinder think she's brilliant so who better to give high marks to than people who will stay in her class and talk her up to anyone who enquiries about the standard of lessons.
      The teacher is unaware of her previous prophecy so is also unaware that there is zero chance Dumbledor will ever fire her. It is obvious Dumbledor does not rate her as a teacher. He has her at the school for her own and Harry's safety. If she were out in the world Voldemort could grab her anytime and toucher the prophecy from her because I bet it's in there somewhere even if she doesn't know about it.

Also, Buckbeak is just an animal in their eyes. Think of how the Malfoy's punish Dobby just for making a mistake. If Dobby hurt or attacked one of them, I think killing him wouldn't be far from their mind. This animal attacks Draco, it's a lesser being and should be put down.

      I agree with you, but I suspect part of the reason he's doing this and part of Lucius being willing to help is that Lucius is no longer on the board of governors of the school. In the first two years Draco swaggers around like he owns the place and some of that is because his Dad is one of the governors. Now that Lucius has been kicked off the board Draco is eager to show that he still has clout at Hogwarts and still gets special treatment. Hence the getting Harry & Ron to do his potions work, rescheduling the match etc. Lucius will also want to show that he still has influence at Hogwarts which I think is why he goes to so much trouble to have Buckbeak executed.

    Peter actually doesn't need a wand to transform. Here's the passage from chapter 20.
    "Harry stood, transfixed by the sight, too intent upon the battle to notice anything else. It was Hermione’s scream that alerted him - Pettigrew had dived for Lupin’s dropped wand. Ron, unsteady on his bandaged leg, fell. There was a bang, a burst of light - and Ron lay motionless on the ground. Another bang - Crookshanks flew into the air and back to the earth in a heap.
    “Expelliarmus!” Harry yelled, pointing his own wand at Pettigrew; Lupin’s wand flew high into the air and out of sight. “Stay where you are!” Harry shouted, running forward.
    Too late. Pettigrew had transformed. Harry saw his bald tail whip through the manacle on Ron’s outstretched arm and heard a scurrying through the grass."
    It seems like he goes for the wand so he can fight his way out of the situation and escape. He is actually disarmed by Harry before he transforms, proving that the wand is not necessary. The real question is why he hid in Hagrid's hut. It seems like he easily could have just left the Hogwarts grounds to get away from Crookshanks.
    Also I would be on team Har-mione if I didn't like Harry and Ginny so much.
    Also also, I'm surprised they didn't catch this line: "They heard a last pair of people hurrying across the hall and a door slamming" right before they go down to Hagrid's. They are hearing future Harry and Hermione hiding in the broom closet.

    • @FlareFritz
      @FlareFritz 4 місяці тому +6

      It's less of needing a wand to transform and more that he needed the wand to undo the spell that Sirius and Lupin cast on him to force him back to human and keep him from transforming. If he didn't need a wand to transform, theres no reason he wouldn't have transformed and ran the second the attention was off of him. Peter is a coward and he definitely would not have tried to fight.

    • @AndrewJGaming
      @AndrewJGaming 4 місяці тому +9

      @@FlareFritz I assume what Sirius and Lupin did was just to force him to reveal himself, not necessarily to trap him in human form. They seem to believe he would be able to transform back into a rat, since they threaten to kill him if he does. And I would say what he does still makes him a coward. He waits until everyone is distracted to make a move and runs away the second Harry tries to confront him.

    • @laser8389
      @laser8389 4 місяці тому +3

      @@FlareFritz In the books there is nothing saying he used any sort of magic on himself. The reason he didn't transform earlier is that there are two adult wizards who know all his tricks standing right there (and a third slightly less useful adult wizard floating unconscious) as well as three very capable students and a cat. He escapes when there is confusion and the adults are occupied and one of the students is knocked down. In the book he only uses the wand to attack Ron and Crookshanks after Lupin and Sirius transform and are busy with each other, then Harry disarms him. THEN he transforms.

      Yea as an American, it’s difficult to compare these levels of exams with anything we have. Typically for high schoolers (grades 9-12, ages 14-18) you take finals at the end of every year for each class and in your 11th grade year you have SATs. And those are meant to qualify you for college, you’re not required to take them, and they cost money. You can also take ACTs, also paid for, in senior year if you choose but again, not required. There is standardize testing through the individual states, but we took them in 5th (end of elementary school) and 8th grades (end of middle school) to place us for standard, honors, or Advanced placement classes for the next level of schooling. They don’t have any bearing on your grades or pass/fail of the grade level you’re in. So if as an 8th grader you fail your state testing but pass your finals, you still pass 8th grade, you just end up in the standard level classes in high school instead of AP or honors. So we don’t have really any kind of testing that happens in 9th-10th grade (the age at which OWLs take place) to compare this to, and we don’t have ANY testing that I know of that you need to qualify for in grade school in order to get a job. Any testing in the US that is required for your job takes place in college or beyond.

      In England it’s completely normal to finish exams and then have another 2 weeks of school afterwards. You usually don’t do much in the last 2 weeks either. I don’t really know why the system is set up that way. But to start exams on 6th June seems incredibly early as school terms here usually end around the third week of July. Their exam season would then be about 3/4 weeks, which is usual in bigger schools but I can’t imagine the Hogwarts exam period takes 4 weeks. Seems like a continuity error to me - it should have been 6th July, that would make much more sense.

    In terms of hermiones lessons/exams being at the same time: in the uk when you get to drop classes for exams, the subjects are usually grouped, and you can only pick 1 subject to study from that group cause the lessons happen simultaneously. So you have your english+maths+science that everyone takes, but then (in my school for example) you couldnt be studying Geography /and/ religious studies, you had to pick 1 and when half the year was in 1 class, the other half was in the other!

    On thinking about the silver ladder (of all the things I picked up from this episode 😂). The ladder has likely been there since the school was built. Now a days we'd have aluminum, steel etc but only metal options a thousand yrs ago would have been copper, bronze, silver and gold. Gold and bronze would be too heavy (gold too expensive), copper too lightweight, silver though also expensive would actually hold up the better of the options above.
    Also, why is there an executioner with an axe? Magic is a thing 😂 there's literally a spell that causes instant painless death.

    On your thoughts about Draco taking Dumbledores help… if Draco was in Gryffindor he could be “friends” with the trio. He would still live in a Slytherin/death eater household and could therefore still be under the threat of death by Voldemort and still have to kill Dumbledore. When he’s offered the protection he’d take it and then later he could end up camping with the trio. Slytherins locket could happen as you suggested and this would make Draco able to use the sword because he would have been a Gryffindor the whole time

    Ok some thoughts on Divination: I believe it’s possible to open your mind to it and learn it to some extent. Like Parvati and Lavender are perfect examples: they are very impressed by prof Trelawney, they believe everything and really wish to learn the subject. The golden trio doesn’t and assumes the prof is a fraud so they keep their minds “closed”. So what I’m trying to say is I always believed that you can learn Divination to some extent without being a Seer. Then of course for big, convoluted, impactful prophecies you’d have to be a Seer.

    There is already sort of a running gag in the series where Ron always remembers facts that are related to food. He is very food driven and he will remember the Exceptions to Gamp’s Magical Laws of Transfiguration. It would be funny if there were more instances of Ron recalling facts related to food. I could see him even being a food critic for the Daily Prophet during the time when Ginny writes for the Sports section. They meet up for lunch at work and Ron annoys Ginny because he constantly criticizes whatever meal they are consuming. 😂 That’s my head canon.

    • @Unfinishedthoughts
      @Unfinishedthoughts 4 місяці тому +2

      In a way the first prophecy has no meaning unless things played out exactly as they did where Snape hears and relays only part of it. So the prophecy could only occur in such a situation. Voldemort's not going to aggressively seek out and attempt to kill Harry or Neville without that. Even assuming he did track down the families to kill them for opposing him and there three times besting him or what not if that's why he's there and does choose to kill the babies [could go either way honestly Voldemort's not above killing babies obviously but he might not spill magic blood if he doesn't think they will oppose him he could have them collected and raised by death eaters to someday join his regime ignorant of their origins] its much less likely theirs a chance for sacrificial love to come into play as Snape is less likely to be aware of the attack on Lily and way less in a position to ask and receive the favor of having Lily potentially spared. As tends to be the case with prophecies surprisingly often the knowledge of the prophecy is the greatest catalyst to it coming to fruition.

Then when dumbledore dies Malfoy is the secret keeper for his own family home, no one can find it unless he tells them where it is. • @FlareFritz
      @FlareFritz 4 місяці тому +4

      This is the most logical and easiest way to read the situation. If he could transform at any time, he would never had to have gone for the wand at all. There would need to be spells to stop animagi from transforming because otherwise the ministry would have no way to imprison them since as we see with Sirius, they could just transform and slip out of their cells.

      In the movies that's definitely a possibility, and I agree with that interpretation. In the books, he never uses the wand on himself. He grabs it after Lupin and Sirius are both busy with each other and uses it to attack Ron and Crookshanks before being disarmed by Harry. Harry tells him to stay where he is, at which point he transforms and runs off into the darkness.

    I think a good comparison for the grades is how for some college classes, you can’t take the next class unless you get a certain grade. I had a few classes that required another class to have a “B or better”, so while getting a C in that class is technically a pass, it wouldn’t qualify you to take the next one. We know for NEWTS teachers can set certain prerequisite grades. That’s why it matters if you pass your OWLS with an A or an O. I guess it wouldn’t matter if you didn’t care about NEWTS, sorta like an associates vs bachelor degree?

Furthermore, we know that in the same book Professor Most charming smile did successfully cast the memory charm but it backfired due to the wand, thus suggesting that the wand was still working. The O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s are based on the UK school system. The old way of doing things was that you were required to attend secondary school from year 1 when you were 12 until year 5 when you were 16, so at the end of your 5th year you took your O-levels (Ordinary Level) exams, which have since been replaced by the GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education). So the equivalent of 6th through 10th grade in America or the first 5 years at Hogwarts (although Hogwarts starts a year younger, age 11 to 15 rather than 12 to 16). In the old days you could choose to leave school when you were 16 (you had to turn 16 by the end of the summer holidays), but in recent years they raised it to 17 and then 18. After your O-levels/GCSEs you can continue on to a sixth form college, taking 3 to 5 subjects which you qualified for on your exams. It is the equivalent of being a junior/senior in American school preparing for post-secondary education or the 6th and 7th years at Hogwarts. You take A-level (Advanced Level) exams in the sixth form, usually narrowing your focus down to 3 subjects after the first year, and your results determine whether or not you can get into university and to a certain extent what kind of career paths are available to you. So that is why she made it so that your OWLs determine which subjects you take in the final two years of school and your NEWTs are used to determine what careers you can qualify for, it is the same way GCSE and A-level works. So not everybody leaves school achieving any A-levels, but if you plan to go to university you do need to have one or more. And the grades which you discuss later on are also based on the way the GCSE grades work, getting an A, B, or C is a passing grade (the modern standard instead of letter grades it is a 1-9, with grades of 4-9 counting as passing). So whether you get an A or a C you have still passed and earn an O-level, but some courses may require you to have an A to enter an A-level course and won't let you in with a C even though it is still a passing grade.
    Regarding Hermione's schedule... firstly I like to point out that Rowling has stated that Hermione is the only student that was ever granted a time turner, so Percy never would have had one. So either he exaggerated about getting 12 OWLs (most likely that is the case with Crouch) or it is possible to sit for an exam without taking the course itself, like when students do self study classes in high school. But by now he is down to his focus on just a couple of NEWT level subjects. As for the timing of Hermione's exams, in going back re-reading (well, re-listening since its the audiobook) I did thing it strange that she has two electives scheduled for the same time as two of the core subjects, But then I thought about it and I am fairly certain Hermione was the only Gryffindor student taking Arithmancy and Ancient Runes whereas the other two exams during those times are something that all of the students have to take... the other houses have those core subjects on their own so their exams in those would be at different times which would not conflict with Arithmancy and Ancient Runes the way the Gryffindor schedule does. Since it was only Hermione taking those and they knew she could attend the exams regardless of the time they were able to schedule it that way. It is easier to make her deal with it than if those classes overlapped with the Ravenclaw test times for instance.

  • @Zeke_O3773

    I’m not sure that anyone other than Hermione had a time turner for school use.
    I think that fifth years’ schedules would allow for 12 shorter classes (maybe subjects that are only 1 semester long) to prepare students for the OWLs.
    I think Hermione is a special case because she’s taking third year level and fifth year level classes whose schedules don’t line up.
    For example, Hermione has 3rd year potions which might be Tuesday morning, at the same time as arithmancy.
    Hermione can’t be both places at once, but a 5th year would obviously have potions at a different time and could take the classes without a time turner.

A lot of classtime isn't actually useful and you really could study at home sometimes more effectively. It really depends on the student's discipline and whether the teachers are putting in filler material and participation marks. So I figured, upon thinking that through, she just got permission to skip classes, and shows up to the important ones while doing all the work, like presentions, papers, tests etc, and grinds the content on all of them, even sometimes skipping classes she could be at if her time is better spent elsewhere. It was wild to think about. With A-Levels, they narrow things down to around 3 or 4 and again there are exams at the end. I'm loving the podcast!! I think you need to know something about dating in Britain before you read the next book. We have a different dating etiquette in Britain than you do in America, and frankly, I prefer yours! In Britain you don't really do casual dating. If you're on a date with someone then you're both seriously considering a relationship together. You only really get 2-3 dates before you have to decide if you're in a relationship or not. So, going to the yule ball with someone, even though it's something you're supposed to bring a date to is basically date no.1, hence the high number of couples that continue after the yule ball. This ups the stakes for asking anything of someone you could be in a relationship with, hence the extra fuss around having to ask someone to the ball, the pressure Harry feels when he's out with Cho etc. It makes it a high pressure situation.

    For the Harry felt unreal bit, I had always assumed it was just because he was a kid, and there's an executioner coming to the school-no, already there-to kill one of Hagrid's glorified pets, and wait, but he's RIGHT THERE, just right there, in the pumpkin patch. That was historically my read on it, anyways.

    Hermoine doesn't hate divination because she thinks the subject area is too unpredictable or less scholarly. She hates it because she didn't receive instant success or praise for her efforts.

    I’ve always thought the class schedule only clashed with hermione because she’s the only one with the combination of classes from taking everything, other students may have taken different electives but less so classes didn’t need to be moved and hermione was the only one needing a time turner. The exam schedule makes no sense at all though

    Love the podcast. Really, I do, so don't take this as bashing, but the "Ron is totally wrong" insistence is giving my "skip ahead" button a workout. Harry knows Ron really cared about Scabbers. Ron was protecting and medicating him all year, which points to caring about Scabbers. Even if he didn't, his concerns over his property were outright ignored, and he has every right to be angry about it. It's also thematically important that Hermione be faced with situations that cause her to grow up as well, as she is also still an adolescent working on coming of age.

      They were both wrong, but not for the reasons they argue about. Hermione made a mistake, and was too stubborn to apologise. Ron, though rightly furious, held on to that grudge far too long, even being downright cruel to Hermione on occasion. Forgiveness is important.
      Or, to sum it up another way: teenagers are idiots.

      @@motorwaffle6700yea but you’re making it seem like Hermione ate scabbers. her cat did what cats do (and he didn’t! Crookshanks didn’t eat scabbed, he ran away, so this is all moot) and even Hagrid tells Ron that he’s being unreasonable by holding Hermione accountable for something her cat did. And like I have said 1000 times in comments over the last few weeks, Ron brought a pet that isn’t listed on the supply list for first years, to a castle FULL of cats (one of their teachers IS a cat, Filch HAS a cat, and cats are listed as acceptable, while rats are not) and then gets mad that his rat is supposedly eaten by a cat. And then he holds this massive, year long grudge against Hermione as if she single handedly killed Scabbers, when that’s just not the case. I do agree that Hermione was being stubborn about it, but I think Ron was wayyyy out of line.

      @@Huff-and-Puff I'm sorry if I'm making it sound like that, but it's really not what I'm saying.
      Stating that Scabbers ran away is moot because the characters don't know that.
      Hagrid's exact words were "people can be stupid about their pets" which is a courtesy that apparently only extends to one pet owner in the scenario.
      As I've seen you told 1000 times in the past few weeks, cats also eat birds, so the "don't bring their prey" point is made moot by the allowing of owls.
      Him being mad at Hermione didn't even last half the year (the incident doesn't take place until several weeks after Christmas the day Harry gets the Firebolt back).
      The crux of the issue isn't even the supposedly dead Scabbers, it's Ron's feelings being outright ignored and disregarded. As he clearly states, he'd forgive Hermione if she even so much as acknowledged that it happened and said sorry, which she flagrantly refused to do. The instant she does, Ron makes good on his word without hesitation.

      @@motorwaffle6700 Cats eat birds but I doubt they would ever attack owls. Cats may attack doves but rarely attack chickens or roosters for examples and a lot of owls are even bigger then them. A snowy owl like Hadwig or an eagle owl are really heavy and may out weight some cats. Besides Owls are hardly ever in the common room and live separated from the rest of the school. The owlery may even be protected by magic against cats (and other predators living on the grounds). My point is the school created the invionment for the owles to be save from the cats. Cats could be a danger for owls like Pigwidgeon but he is still able to fly. Also if all cats in Hogwarts are wearing bells they can't sneek up on brids.. The bigger danger for tiny owls are propaply another owl or a raven not a cat.

    How about this: during Divination we see only Gryffindors. Same for Charms and Transfiguration, if I'm not wrong. What if Hermione, only Gryffindor that year who had chosen runes, arithmancy and Muggle studies, just went to class with Ravenclaws for first two and Hufflepuffs for third? And because it was then impossible to accomodate school schedule without having gap hours every day, McGonagall petitioned for Time Turner for her. So neither Percy, Barty Crouch Jr, Tom Riddle or Dumbledore needed it, because there likely were enough students of their house interested in these optional classes, to just organize schedule different, probably they've just finished classes later. But it would be ridiculous for Hermione to have individual classes.
    Quote from first book: "Even Neville scraped through, his good Herbology mark making up for his abysmal Potions one". How about that? ;) I bet Lupin's grade, and Hagrid's helped (you think Hagrid would give Harry bad mark? ;) I think he should give Draco zero points, because of his lack of respect towards Hippogrifs, but well, he's better than that), also Harry was quite good academically, based on his OWLs grades. So one Snape (and Trelawney maybe?) can't make him repeating the year.
    Ginny confirmed in book six that Hermione and Krum actually kissed.
    Maybe Dumbledore just asked Fudge to let Hagrid say goodbye? I guess he realized what happened after Buckbeak was gone, but before it wasn't easy to predict (especially when Dumbledore never studied Divination... which is ironic considering Grindelwald situation).
    It wasn't better in the movies. Just more graphic and spectacular, which not always is better. But scene in the book was more emotional.
