    I'm working on new study music - subscribe to my music channel to hear it when it's finished! ua-cam.com/channels/mqK2G-3AL_WP5KffH_wqAA.html (or on Spotify: open.spotify.com/artist/2Qch08zdpJ5rMPkHqNU7Be?si=R8tb4i6aQJWEEq5DeVTFcw)
    Here's my 1% Rule log for this video:
    - Spent a lot of time learning new techniques in Lightroom and Photoshop for making better thumbnails. Can you believe I didn't know what the burn and dodge tools did before this?
    While I didn't have time to work it into this video, I started learning Adobe Illustrator this week. Next week's video will have some dope motion graphics as a result!
    What is the 1% Rule? Essentially, it's the idea that you should aim to get 1% better with each piece of work you do, instead of pressuring yourself to create "perfect" work. Over time, these 1% improvements add up as long as you're consistent. More info, along with my journal for all videos, here: thomasjfrank.com/my-1-rule-journal/
    P.S. - What other tricks do you use to get yourself to start your work?

      physically writing down what I need to get done today and how much time to spend on each of them helps me.

    Being in flow is an egoless state. Its when you're doing your work just for the sake of doing it with little concern about the end product. This frees you up to not only enjoy what you're doing but also helps you produce your best work.

    I can't even begin to describe how important the distraction journal is.
    I recently started writing "Morning Pages" to get my thoughts out in the morning, allowing me to trap my anxieties on paper. It's amazing how much clearer the rest of my day is when I accomplish this.

    • @eljefe4300

      What do you actually write down?

    • @neverendinchaos4800
      @neverendinchaos4800 3 роки тому +6

      @@eljefe4300 I actually do this a lot. My mind finds literally anything to distract myself with (e.g. typing this comment). I guess, I just write down whatever that important thought was that I had and then I get back to whatever other thing I was doing. Sometimes, I come back to what I wrote and flesh the thought out a little more so I don't forget the full idea, you know? I write down literally anything that is distracting me, so it doesn't have to stay in the back of my mind, waiting to be forgotten. It could be a random song that popped into my head that I wanted to listen to; some other task that I just remembered I had to do; some cool video that I wanted to watch. Literally anything. It's all about relieving your mind of having to remember the million other thoughts that are spinning around in there as you're trying to focus on the task at hand.

    i think this is why i'm so good at getting stuff done when it's on a whim and i didn't really think about doing it beforehand. like the other day, i painted an entire wall in my room. but the day didn't start out with me wanting to paint a wall; i just wanted to dust and vacuum my room and that small task turned into the much bigger task that i normally would have had to psyche myself up to do.

    • @LaraNaomi
      @LaraNaomi 4 роки тому +6

      Totally! I find this as well. Especially if I start with the smallest piece of a puzzle I often end up finishing way more than I intended. Now I clean my house every morning for at least 30min simply because I wash my coffee cup after I finish it.

    • @monkiram
      @monkiram 4 роки тому +4

      Yeah I notice this so much with cleaning especially. If I plan to clean, it becomes this huge overwhelming thing in my brain so then I procrastinate to avoid it which makes it even more anxiety-inducing and it never gets done. But if I happen to do a really small part of it one time, I usually end up happily spending the rest of my day doing that because I just got really into it. The mind is a strange place and mine rarely cooperates with what I want it to do.

    The most useful tip for me is creating work that might be garbage. As a Social Sciences student, I had to write A LOT of essays throughout the semester, and I always found it hard for me to start writing since I expected the first words/paragraphs to be perfect. However, as I begun understanding how my brain and workflow worked, I started writing the first words just as if I was talking to someone and explaining my ideas and theeeen proceded to edit and "write". This continues to be the way I work, I always start off with writing nonsense and then structuring those ideas into actual deliverables.

    The distraction Journal is formally called a brain dump, mainly used in bullet journal and with people with ADHD to empty the mind and be able to focus when your mind is overwhelmed.
    Another thing that helps me a lot is Gamifying everything that i do. I highly recommend Habitica for this stuff, since it turns your tasks, habits and daily routines to a RPG system where you level up and get better gear as you do these tasks, I normally user this with very small tasks to motivate myself and get into a productive state without getting overwhelmed.
    And Under planning is incredibly helpful. Always plan for the less amount of work and the worst case scenario. This has really helped me get stuff done on time or even earlier, since i estimate myself to not be efficient, getting these tasks done on time or before really pushes me into doing the rest of the stuff easily, since i think i already achieved something today.

    You’ve spoken about a distraction journal in several of your past videos (such as with the Pomodoro Technique) and learning about that from you has helped me so much! I used to remember all kinds of things right in the middle of studying-from grocery lists to event invitations-and it would bounce around my head while I was trying to concentrate. Being able to write those distractions down and stop worrying that I’ll forget them later has led to much more focused work, so thank you, Thomas!

    It's amazing how some of the things on this list that you said shouldn't be done, are things that I had always thought had to be done in order to succeed. Really shows that everyone should look at even the little things they do everyday and second guess them. Always stop and think for a second about your rational for doing something. Especially when things don't work out- instead of just doing it again and again, maybe think about what you're doing, and what you could try to change.

    Great tips in here, Thomas!
    I'm a game developer and, whenever I sit down to start coding something, I always get that mental barrage of "things I must think about", like you on your music production endeavours. I start thinking about the code, the project's architecture etc and usually get paralyzed, just sitting there, thinking, and going nowhere.
    I'll try to adapt what you said about just "start messing around" to "just start writing some code", so I can see a clearer picture of what I'm trying to do. Thanks!

I've been trying to download a free software option since I don't have enough money so any kind of orientation would help. Thank you for everything Thomas.

    One useful advice I saw on internet about "create garbage" was "While writing, use the font comic sans ms." And I really get why this can make writing easier. The font itself is so funny and ridicilious that it doesn't scare you like the other "serious" fonts. It doesn't make you feel like you should create something magnificent. It takes the burden away. Could be a useful tip for you guys too so I just wanted to share.

    1. Start incredibly small
    2. Allow yourself to create garbage (because some of it is not going to be)
    3. Jot things down in non-ideal places (it allows yourself think more creatively because of less pressure)
    I agree with 2 and 3. But for 1, I believe that there are some times when you iust have to “kiss the frog”. Do that one major task. Avoid procrastination. Do the real thing and not confuse movement with progress.

I wrote literally all my poems, while lying in the bathtub or sitting in the bus on my way home. And I wrote nothing in moments, when I decided to sit down and write. I was curious, but didn't even surmise, that there is a word for this phenomena and the ways to reach it. Thanks, Thomas and hello from Russia]
