Just love the fact that you are enjoying Midnight Tides so much. Usually people struggle with the new setting because they try to find their favorite locations and characters which they don't get. You treat it as fresh, so enjoy it more. Conversely, the reason why this feels so smooth is because this book does not require knowing anything beforehand, almost every information you need is in this book itself. The issue you face with spacing out the books, i.e. forgetting things, that isn't an issue in this book. Hope it remains easy for you from next books also.
I remember watching an interview with Erikson and he said Midnight Tides was the easiest for him to write. I'm not sure if Tehol and Bugg are my favourite duo in the series but they're easily the funniest.
Midnight Tides is one of the books that flows the best. It's one of the shorter books and more self-contained with fewer POVs, too. And one of the funniest.
I love that you are having such a good time reading Midnight Tides. Despite me having fond memories of it, I had feared that a whole new setting and cast of characters might put you off. Also, despite Malazan having so many amazing duos (Icarium and Mappo, Kalam and QB, Fiddler and Hedge, Cutter and Apsalar, ST and Cotillion, Iskaral Pust and his mule, with a few more still to come), I feel like Tehol and Bugg might be my favourite and are definitely the funniest. Cannot wait for you to finish the book and to watch your spoiler-free as well as spoiler-filled review.
Hoorah. Under the Black Flag is a book I reread most summers. Cordingly has some other wonderful books and is just a great writer. Cordingly was a historical consultant for the first Pirates of the Caribbean film.
This arc of Yona is one of my favorites, and when our boys get into trouble, everything gets so tense. Not just for Yona, but for the rest of the gang too. Regarding Soo-Won, he may not be my favorite character, but he's the character that fascinates me the most. I love how on the outside he may seem like a very aloof person, but on the inside, he's very meticulous and calculating, and he's not afraid to show that contrast in his personality when the situation calls for it. Glad you keep enjoying it. See you on the next vlog.✌️
I’ve read Malazan three times through and your vlogs make me want to pick them up all over again. Can’t wait for you to read book six - some of the best moments of the whole series!
Tehol and Bugg are my favorite ever. I just love them sooooo much and the entire host of characters surrounding them. This really is my favorite Malazan book.
Under the Black Flag was legitimately an assigned "textbook" for me in college. I took a history elective that was ~junior level and it was all about the history of pirates, specifically in Caribbean countries.
You're really selling Malazan series to me, definitely going to read it when I can focus on it. I'm also realy interested into the true pirates stories. I'll look that audiobook up too.😁👒❤️
randomly here just as you released this so saying a quick hi and thanks for your vids merph; i trust your recs and save your videos like a lil squirell to watch on a sat morning with a coffee. Need to sleep now bc its half past midnight in new zealand but hope you are well!
Under the Black Flag sounds like a fun read as I love learning the details of history. But for now I'm already having my TBR turned around again due to situations but I'm not mad about it, it's getting me back to the libary and that's the more important part. "A Natural History of Dragons" had to be put on hold for now as my buddy read person had to return her book and have to wait for a bit before she could check it out again. I'm actually at chapter 20 while she's at chapter 17 so we don't have much more to go but we're enjoying the story a lot. So with that I'm going to start doing a buddy read with another friend with Mercades Lackey's "The Mage Wars" Trilogy, starting with the Black Gryphon (published in 1995). I've heard it's the weakest of her Valdamar Series, part of it being because of Larry Dixion being the second aurthor, so I didn't want to buy the book just to have it where I didn't enjoy it and wouldn't reread it, It's in the libary, so I'm happy about that, but I'm waiting for my friend to be ready to read it again first so I can check it out and start reading it right away. No physical copy anymore as it's only in Ebook and Audiobook (while the other two for some reason are purely in physical form and audiobook....) So due to that (and not finding the physical copy of it) I decided to check out two other books. One of them is Mercades Lackey's "Gwenhwyfar" (the premuis sounded really great and it's following apparently King Arthur's Third wife of the same name (apparently there were three wives using the exact name) who was a warrior queen? My intrest was caught.) And the second one is actually a super sweet gem of a story by Anne McCaffery... "An Exchange of Gifts". You would probably actually like "An Exchange of Gifts" a lot more than something like "the Ship who Sang". It's not a very long book. Only 93 pages, and it's a little more like a Fairy tale, however it's a lovely story and I didn't even know it existed. The ROC printing of it also has a lovely Illistrated boarder around everything. I was suprised to have found it, and it focuses the development of a mutual friendship of understanding and suvrival first before it goes into a love story (it doesn't follow the formula of "Romance" so I won't call it that), and published in 1995. An Exchange of Gifts also have the better writting similar to why I fell in love with the Harper Hall Trilogy and the Crystal Singers Trilogy. Mom didn't like the Ship who Sang much either so It may be better for you to try other works outside of the Ship series. So if you can get your hands on An Exchange of Gifts, defeatly try reading that. It's a lovely gem of a story and it's a fun comfort read for me. I'll let you know how I like Gwenhwyfar because it sounds like it may explore themes similar to Avelon where it focuses the complicated matters of magic and being a woman and not villainizing the woman. I've always enjoyed Mercades Lackey's work outside the Valdamar series and this is the first one catching my intrest. (This one was published in 2009). My goal is get back into reading and I'm almost done with An Exchange of Gifts after only reading it as soon as I got home (I'm on page 44)
'The Republic of Pirates: Being the True and Surprising Story of the Caribbean Pirates and the Man Who Brought Them Down' is also a good pirate history book if you want another.
Any chance of continuing the cradle series? Was really hoping for some opinions on ghostwater someday. That being said, thanks for posting all of these!
I think what you might be looking for is The Pirate History Podcast! It describes exactly what you are looking for 😂 Not only does it do a good job of telling an entertaining, deep dive narrative into a lot of pirates, but it also gives the historical context in a way that isn't dry. And it starts BEFORE the golden age of piracy--it starts by looking at sailors in Christopher Columbus's time! If anything, it has given me an appreciation for just how broad the term "pirate" can be!
I loved The Bone Shard Daughter but disliked book 2 for some of the same reasons you mentioned. Thanks for the thoughts on the final book! I’ve been struggling to decide whether or not to invest the time to finish the series, but I think I’ll go ahead, with expectations tempered.
I know you didn't discuss vagabond in this video but considering you're about to catch up... Are you considering reading the original novel for it? musashi (1935). A lot of the stuff that happens in the manga is there or it is different in some way or another. I read it last year and it finally gave me the ending of a story I love so much. The tone of the story is quite different but I really recommend it. It is quite long though.
Yep! I got Color of Magic in the mail but then decided I should go ahead and get the next book too and read them back to back so I’m waiting on that to come in
ONE PIECE RULEZ!!! Say that a gentle reminder Merphy. I know you know that Sir Francis Drake earned his knighthood by praticing piracy and not the romatic kind...

A walk by the stream piggybacking your grandmother. Birds chirping in the background. You're living the life. Beautiful show. Thank you.

putting Under the Black Flag on my TBR. I love stuff like this
I love that you got in the mood with the pirate shirt 💕
Midnight tides!! I think even tho its new characters, 5 books in you have gotten used to erikson style which makes it easier to read.
Tehol and Bugg are my favorite ever. I just love them sooooo much and the entire host of characters surrounding them. This really is my favorite Malazan book.

Rereading Midnight Tides currently and also loving it! So glad you're having an engaging Malazan experience. 🙂 More to come!
I don't know if wearing scull t-shirt while talking about pirates, but it's so beautiful. 💌

I have that on hold at my library! Just waiting for it to come in!
I love your tops. they fit u so well, will you ever continue asoiaf series, or are you done with it for good?
Has Merphy read To Sleep in a sea of stars?
I am very excited to read Bone Shard War
Any chance of continuing the cradle series? Was really hoping for some opinions on ghostwater someday.
That being said, thanks for posting all of these!
Have you seen Black Sails? Its a great show. Its written as a prequel to Treasure Island. Great dialogue, great acting.
I red the pirate one last year. It was interesting
Which Westeros house would Merphy be a part of?

I’m liking your correct opinion that MT is the best Malazan book.

First
to get Luffy to make Merphy a member of the one piece crew ;)
Soo-Won is too fixated on his goals to be willing to learn and grow as Yona did
Anyway, do watch Mushishi too
Does Merphy drink coffee to go with her hyper attitude? XD
Bugg... dry?
Wow. This comment takes the cake. 😂😂😂😂😂
It will take a whole new meaning at the end of the book.
I totally love these reading 📖 vlogs they are really amazing 😻
@@britneynicolewrites you said it
Yo Discworld!? Are you still doing chronological order reading after vimes series?
Yep! I got Color of Magic in the mail but then decided I should go ahead and get the next book too and read them back to back so I’m waiting on that to come in
I really enjoyed book 1 in the bone shard trilogy book 2 was good but I didn't love it I haven't read book 3 yet
Damn, I gotta get back to Malazan 😅
ONE PIECE RULEZ!!! Say that a gentle reminder Merphy. I know you know that Sir Francis Drake earned his knighthood by praticing piracy and not the romatic kind...
Are you a fan of Hook from Once Upon a Time?
