    I adoreTom Bombadil. He brought peace and silliness to a serious part of the book. Also, that is the last time the Hobbits get a chance to rest until Rivendell and Lothlorien. Tom shows hospitality and beauty to the very shocked hobbits.

    People who complain about Fitz don’t realize where he came from, arriving at the very young age of approximately 5 yrs of age and then no one really teaching him anything about being a human. I really could relate to him, having to teach yourself about relationships and emotions etc.

      I’m in the even smaller minority that thought the 2nd was easily the best out of them. Loved the first, 2nd is one of my fav books and the third I didn’t like at all. I think the 2nd book perfectly blended the political aspects of the world and still have some new things with the mistborn. Book three felt completely bonkers and I really disliked the direction of the ruin and preservation story line

    The gold foiling on the sanderson leatherbounds comes off if you so much as look at it too hard in my experience. I'd prefer like a gold colored acrylic inlay or something over thinly stretched gold paint barely sticking to the leather. The bonded leather is also not very quality compared to genuine leather, but the way of kings is the only one with genuine leather.

    Petrik's right about the Witcher books The short stories are alright, but the novels aren't that good. You're both wrong about The Lord of the Rings lol. I think the real unpopular opinion is liking Tom Bombadill and I really do. I don't think he's mysterious. I mean in a way, I guess, but I like how silly and interesting he is. Also I'd say I like the books and the movies for LOTR equally. The movies made me love LOTR then I read the books and although it took me a little while to read them I loved going through the long journey with all of the characters (and reading more about Ents). I really liked Pippin and Merry a lot more because of the books. I disliked Boromir. Loved Aragorn, probably more because of the books. And I liked Legolas in the movies but didn't really care for him a lot in the books, but loved his dynamic with Gimli and I love Gimli equally in the movies and the books. The books have a lot more to them so I love them a lot but the movies bring the drama and intensity which is probably why people like them more. It was hard to read through the descriptions but I didn't dislike the descriptions, just made me grow respect for Tolkien and his ability to describe (everything lol).
    Also I just started Assassin's Apprentice and I'm very excited to go through the book and the entire series. I'm like 30 pages in and it felt oddly cozy because of the atmosphere she paints. I'm very excited to read the whole Realm of the Elderlings. So I'm glad you guys really like it and it seems to be a common opinion so I hope I feel the same.

      I like Tom Bombadill, but I don't like that the plot is stopped in it's tracks to have him in the book. He would have worked better in his own story than in a massive epic that already had major pacing issues.

    I think that the problem with the Broken Binding is that, at that price point I expect acid-free paper and sewn bindings. And with the broken binding it’s not always the case

    • @ProudPlatypus
      @ProudPlatypus Рік тому

      Yeah, they don't feel that much different from a Waterstones exclusive, and it might mostly just be a smaller company making a smaller amount of them, which makes the cost for each book higher. And fair, but I personally would much prefer to spend more money for nicer paper, than a bit more of a robust dust cover.
      How I feel about binding moves around a lot, it's more a matter of, I like when the book isn't stiff to hold open, and you can achieve or fail to achieve that with both sewn and glued binding.

    Sorry for the shocker btw. Clarification: I don't like the outside aesthetic of any leatherbound edition, they just look like ugly old stuffy books to me and I don't want them on my shelves. I am 100% certain that the insides of Sanderson's special editions are well worth it, those illustrations are just drool-worthy! Hope I was able to redeem myself here hahahah 🤣

    • @ProudPlatypus
      @ProudPlatypus Рік тому +1

      I don't like when they put those bumps on the spine. They were original on books because the string used to bind the pages just shook out like that, but the ones on newer books are usually just there as an aesthetic choice. I'm just not into it.

    Are booktubers who earn hundreds of $'s monthly through Patreon, Google Ad, Buy Me a Coffee, sponsorships, and affiliate links and who on top of that receive many of their books for free from publishers and fans, really the right people to judge whether books/special editions are too expensive for what you get? The statement "they are really affordable" is rather subjective when you don't get 10 free books every month, next to a nice cash injection.
    I'm not complaining or judging btw, love both booktubers and watch every single video of them (besides the book reviews of books I haven't read). I just think most viewers are living in a different world when it comes to buying books. The georgeous Juniper collection of Wheel of Time costs a whopping 1000$ for example. Malazan by BB will also be massive. One the one hand it's understandable, lot of people are involved and everyone wants a nice profit, but to term it "really affordable" does not apply I think.

    One thing I would say about the Lord of the RIngs book series is the value of Tolkien being a pioneer. While there were high-adventure stories and endless mythologies before, the LotR world was the first real, fleshed out high fantasy world, and we all know the lengths to which Tolkien went to develop it. The films satisfied a different hunger, and they definitely couldn't have existed WITHOUT the books. Imagine some writer/director/SFX team just making the LotR series out of nothing. I wager it would be nearly impossible.

    Sapkowski (in the Witcher books) is really good at writing individual scenes. So many moments of the books that you read and are like "yea that was badass". But unfortunately he's not the best at stitching scenes together into a cohesive body. I think that's why a lot of folks don't end up liking the books.

    I AM SHOCKED. I had to pause the video to write this comment about LotR
    I think I understand where people are coming from when they say the books are too long and too hard to get through
    However where I disagree is when you said the films invoked more emotion. I found myself crying on so many occasions in the books, especially the third. Also, the 2nd book is my personal fav of the three and that movie is the worst one
    I feel like they spent a lil too long in fight scenes in the movie, which understandably is what people want to see, but as someone who cares about the lore + strategy far more than the actual wars themselves I found the books way more interesting

    Well, I agree with Wheel of Time take. The series bored me a lot. The Witcher is specific - it really shows the time and place it was written 1980s-1990s Poland and as someone who partly remember that times, well, mainly the 90s, well, I can say that the book series was something very different in the landscape of fantasy and sf in this part of the world and in Poland in particular. Also, lots of stuff and nuances was simply lost in English translation. PS. Another comment hopefully later. Making a lunch right now.

    about the witcher, there are 2 starts aka 2 first books
    first first book: "The Last Wish", which is a collection of short stories that lays down the foundation, and its not the best out of the short stories collections, that is the second one "Sword of destiny"
    second first book: "Blood of Elves", which is the first book of the 5 books saga aka the 3rd book in the series chronologically and this is not the best out of the saga that is either "Time of Contempt" or "Baptism of fire"

Realm of the Elderlings is a masterpiece. And I like Mark Lawrence a lot! I do think SOME epic fantasy books are a bit too long - but I wouldn’t say they all are. Haven’t read the others in the video.

    Another comment by me: Mistborn era 1 is good and surprisingly coherent story. I can't properly get into Mistborn era 2 though. Long, huge books series can be both very immersive and very boring. There is a serious under representation of short stories, novellas, short series and stand alones. My finances and me cannot afford too much book commitment per year 😂 Also both book and movie LOTR trilogies are great in their own rights. 'Babel' is a boring crossover of a novel, an academic book and socio-political manifesto. Had problems with finishing it.

    Sanderson’s leatherbounds are made to be read and are 100% worth it for reading. But…… as a fan of classic fantasy covers, I also understand where they are coming from (I think I mentioned that in a video of mine once somewhere)
    In the end, we cannot display every book by their cover, and the standardization of the leatherbounds make them beautiful editions to a collection that stand out even on their spines. Soooo…… I think I understand what they were saying, but still disagree with them.
    Great video guys!

      For books that are meant to be read, they sure do fall apart at the lightest touch. Idk if I just got a bad copy or if the world wants to gaslight me over this, but I can follow all recommendations to the letter, and the foiling on my sanderson leatherbound comes off even without me touching it. My Barnes and noble leatherbounds for half the price don't suffer this problem, and my Easton Press books have actual gold inlay and are still less expensive and never fall apart.

    Hi there Library of a Viking and Petrik. How are you both doing? You two are hilarious. Thanks for entertaining me so well. I do agree with you about the Witcher series. I had to DNF the first book, the Last Wish, because I not only fell asleep, but also I hated his portrayal of women. I was so offended. Also, I tried to listen to the first book of the Ancestor by Mark Lawrence, and I was not a fan of how he ended the first book, it was offensive. The beginning was well done, but I felt no inclination to start working on the other books in that series. I wanted to let you both know, that i am currently on chapter 19 of the audiobook version of the Final Empire Mistborn, by Brandon Sanderson. it is my second time in listening to the first 2 books in Mistborn era 1, and I am loving it so far. His world building and character work is amazing. I have never listened to the third book, I have no idea why, except that I got distracted by another book, but I am hoping to listen to it in full this time. I have also just started reading while listening to the first volume in the Full Metal Panic light novel series, which has been great. I am also working on listening to Go Tell The Bees That I am Gone by Diana Gabaldon, which has been awesome too. Also, about the Lord of the Rings movies vers the books. I love them both, but the movies I think portray women much better. J. R. R. Tolkien did not know what to do with, or how to write female characters.

  • @pappywinky4749
    @pappywinky4749 Рік тому

    I was so disappointed with the green bone saga. I read the first 2 books and was like "that's it?" It felt like I was reading a cheap kung fu movie at times. I just didn't care one bit about the characters, Hilo was really good, but every body else could have died and I would not have cared. Although I was upset about Lan. Almost every character outside of the Kaul family was one dimensional other than a few exceptions of course. It took me forever to finish Jade War. When people mentioned to me that legacy was much slower than the other two, I decided not to finish the series. I see the appeal, but don't get the hype. I love slow burn stories, deep character development and political machinations, but the whole thing felt forced.
    I feel like my opinion on it is harsh but the disappointment after getting so hyped for it was crushing. Also reevaluating LotR right now with the audiobooks, and I think I appreciate them even more as an adult that the first time I read them 20 years ago. I think were so used to the fast-paced, high-action books than we don't appreciate slower reads like LotR anymore. Obviously, its a bit of a generalization, but I do find myself sometimes struggling with such reads after having read so many intense, short reads.
    As for Babel, I think we need more books like it. The originality, the explorations, etc. Its not a perfect book but having experienced a lot of discrimination based on language where I live, it was really awesome to read a book focusing on those aspects.

    You booktubers really need to pick up LOTR again. Daniel Greene also said he has not read it in forever.
    I have recently started reading it to my kids and it makes every modern fantasy book feel like a cheap knock off by comparison. I am really searching for something that can match it, there has to be a fantasy book out there that is better, but I have not found it yet.
    There are plenty of modern fantasy books that surpass LOTR in one way or another, but nothing that uses the prose/diction so effectively to put you in another world in a way that is so seamlessly intriguing. Tolkien is to words, as Rembrandt is to paint. He paints the perfect amount of detail to allow room for your imagination and wonder to run into all of the vaguely defined dark places of his world, and then he slams down the heavy impasto of his glittering focal point.

    I'm also not into leather bound books. It's not the price, the price is alright for the quality, it's the resources. Leather has quite the co2 footprint, plus the water/food intake and methane output while the cattle is growing. It seems so unnecessary, as the story doesn’t change from any old banged up library book. Maybe if it was the artificial "leather" made from pineapple I'd be game, because they do look awesome.

      The show is just a bit of a hot mess, the books are various degrees of problematic, misogynistic and some parts are violent for the sake of glorifying violence. The games are good they say, never tried myself

    Well Sanderson in general is overrated. His prose is overall bad.

      His simple prose doesn't bother me. I just can't stand the subset of sanderson fans who turned into a cult by making sanderson fandom a personality trait.

      Spoilers ahead for those two want to read Stormlight:
      I think Sanderson deliberately taps into an audience that makes *reading* their entire personality trait. Likewise, he also seems to like the idea of being a “writer” more than actually telling a story. The self-indulgence is unbearable for me. I second jacobstates’ opinion: the way his fans (and Booktube at large) try to perennially promulgate this idea that his novels are the best thing since sliced bread (quite zealously, I might add) is ridiculously out of proportion. I read through the first two novels in the Stormlight Archive and tentatively thought that they were okay but not great - but I hadn’t dared to imagine that a book could suffer from feature creep (of all things) until I encountered Oathbringer. When Sanderson decided that all of Bridge Four gets magical powers, offering some half-baked explanation for it and we’re supposed to roll with it was the last straw.

      @Kris9kris I love the mistborn trilogy. But yeah, I read way of kings and it was just okay. Kaladin was kind of a Mary Sue.
      P.S. I stopped reading in time, but you may want to edit your comment because it sounded like it was about to be spoilery.

    Wheel of Time is the most over-rated series? *cackle* Admittedly, it is mediocre at best, and it should have stopped after the second book, but have you ever read Marcel Proust's Rememberance of Things Past? Gads, it's awful. Not Finnegan's Wake awful (if that were a series, it would win), but very, very over-rated and like luke-warm soup that has started to spoil. Proust is trash. Jordan is nowhere near as boring or insipid.

      I would probably agree with Mike if my introduction was the horde of rothfuss fans online overhyping it. However for me it was one of my first fantasy books because it's my mother's favorite, and I wanted to read it. I thought the writing was beautiful, but even still Kvothe is a Mary Sue 🤣. I gave it 4 stars.
