So many bands from USA were famous around the world and not even half of them understand English but still enjoy the music. Why people from USA can’t do the same?
I'm American, listen to American rock and metal bands and don't understand half of what they're singing a lot of the times. The ones I can understand are often nonsense anyway... Never really occurred to me that it was all that important.

Lollapalooza is the biggest music festival in the USA. Used to be heavy on rock but now a lot of pop and hip hop. Band Maid was heaviest band there. They were early in the day and it was hot. By the evening it is loaded with people. They were the 1st Japanese band to play there since X-Japan many moons ago.
For an outdoor festival raw feed I thought the mix was pretty good. They performed this song at Yokohama and killed it. Mix and camera work much better. Hopefully it gets released as an official live video.
Since you asked ……. “why they introduced the maid costumes in the band?”, here it is the answer:
Miku, the rhythm guitarist (always with the red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in maid cafes (very popular in Japan and Taiwan). The Band-Maid idea is a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see (cute maids) is NOT what you get (Hard Rock/Punk/Metal). They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "Servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses".
agree with above........there is a docu-series on each of the members by "Ohrenje" that provides all the background of each and how hard they have worked for over 10 years to promote that gap and win over fans.....please try to remember this was a livestream from Lollapaloza on Hulu.....so not the bands official video......thats why the cameras missed a ton of bass solo time and mix was muddy....Lolla is one of the Largest multiple day shows in the USA, and their set time was at like early day in early august (100 degrees out).......enjoy your vids and thank you for showing the maids to others.

The performance was streamed on Hulu live and the audio and video work was done by whoever was hired by the festival. Band-Maid wasn't involved in the production side. They played around 1 pm and the crowd got bigger as they played. Probably a couple thousand at the end. They were not headliners of the festival.

I can't speak English fluently, but I love foreign music.
And I've been to many band-made concerts, and I always think Saiki's vocals are great.

Lyrics? Who needs lyrics?
Band Maid are one of very few artists who consistently record instrumental tracks. Not only instrumental by design, but their full lyrical work as instrumentals. They are superior songwriters and arrangers. (Notably Kanami, lead guitar)

Plenty of Japanese bands do instrumental versions of songs, often as bonus tracks. And I, for one, need Miku's lyrics.

This band, despite being a hard rock band, consistently releases 'masterpieces' that are originally instrumental, like a fusion band. Is this common among Japanese rock bands? Also, it's quite rare for a band to become famous by having their instrumental songs featured so often, whether in official videos, live performances or reaction videos on UA-cam, isn't it? This is probably because Kanami is the composer in this band.
@@britwill72jp Just among the all-female Japanese bands that have gotten attention on English-speaking y t, Destrose, Mary's Blood, Aldious, Gacharic Spin, Lovebites, and Nemophila (among others) have done original instrumentals and/or instrumental versions of songs originally with vocals.
They're pretty square. They look more like swifties.
I discovered Band Maid last year. I love the costumes. I appreciate how elegant they are and don't look like a bunch of cheap whores like so many American artists.
The best part of BAND-MAID is SAIKI’s vocals, even if you can’t understand the vocals.

Actually it was the worst part of BM to me when I first got into BM around 2018. Their instrumentation and songwriting (mostly kanami then) was what hooked me and to this day is what keeps me coming back to BM.
That said, Saiki has gotten so much better, and her confidence and command of the stage has improved by miles cos of the tours. Plus her voice has also grown on me a lot.
So to my ears, their vocals are definitely not holding them back anymore.
Still, if I have to nitpick about BM, their vocals is often the first I start with 😅. So I can relate well when a reactor has similar reactions. Especially on live videos like these where the audio isn’t clean.
One of the best calls and responses between lead and bass in the history of Hard Rock, with subtle drumming from Akane helping move things along without detracting from the two main focuses of attention (though the camera editor still missed a lot of MISA's bass work). If you want great Rock and Metal sung in English, you're going to have to listen to 20th century western bands as this century's music now belongs to Japanese women. Strong, independent women who can use English but choose to sing mostly in their native language.
This was the second song of a 2 song medley. Dice being the first. You have to listen to them together to actually get the flow into Hate? Because of that, I can understand how it took a minute or two to get into the flow of the song. Secondly, this is a recording from Hulu that was streaming the concert. I don't believe they had a direct feed into the sound board. They were using mics around the venue which is why it sounds so hollow, and when do half crowded outdoor concerts ever sound amazing? As far as not understanding the lyrics, who cares, her voice is also an instrument. Thanks for the reaction !
I listened to the live stream and the sound quality was great. I'm confident that the audio is from the mixing board. I think the fan who recorded the live stream from which this clip comes was forced to capture the audio by using their computer's microphone to record the sound coming out their computer's speakers (the result of anti-piracy decisions in creating the screen recorder used). This is reason for the hollow sound of the video. I think that creating a reaction video from that recording degrades the audio even further.

Added about band formation. There are many rock bands active in Japan. Maid costumes have the effect of making them stand out, but even in Japan, they are often ridiculed for their lack of ability. BAND-MAID is trying to counter that with their ability. In fact, in the early days of the band's formation, they were not seen and were not popular. They have come this far with their amazing songwriting and live performances.
Hate is the second song for which singer Saiki wrote the lyrics. At the time, she was angry at men who cheated and betrayed women. In Japan, such scandals, in which famous celebrities cheat on women, are often reported. Currently, Japan's most famous celebrity is being talked about after being forced out of business due to a scandal involving a woman.
Next, I recommend "from now on." This song is a dramatic hard rock instrumental piece that can be called symphonic, created by Kanami, who has perfect pitch and is trained as a piano player. The lead guitar continues to sing throughout the song.
Yes, I second this suggestion about "from now on". Especially if you love the instruments. Kanami the lead guitarist really shines throughout the song, singing with her guitar.

This is not to say that BAND-MAID is like that.
Bands dressed in cute maid outfits mean that even in Japan, they are often made fun of because of their appearance.
Some people don't even want to listen to their songs after seeing them in maid costumes.

Here in America children are taught a saying from a young age, "Do not Judge a Book by its cover." Meaning things are not always what they seem, good or bad, upon a casual first glance.
Just the same, snap (quick) judgments are often made here as well, but that lesson we learned early on allows us to reevaluate and reconsider the fact we might have been wrong upon further inspection after more information has been collected.

Crikey you two must have attended some very rare open air performances where the sound and vocals was great. I have listened to band from late sixties onwards and it was very rare you could make out what the vocalist was singing and even worse at open air performances. Th vocals for me is more of an instrument that adds to the band overall sound and if needed I can look up the lyrics , which I did in the past from lyrics printed on the albums sleeve or inserts. For me, even though the guitar is amazing SAIKI's vocals adds so much to the band

Also, learning (some of) a new language can be fun and interesting, and for us older folks is probably even better at maintaining brain health than Sudoku or some puzzle app (tho I'm not knocking those).
I wouldn't be surprised if figuring out possible meanings of lyrics in general, and especially translated lyrics, has the same benefits.

Sam and Phillip, I know someone has explained the maid costumes in their concerts. The Maids change their costumes each year. They now are wearing different maid costumes (or what they call their combat gear) for 2024. They introduced their new costumes at their 10 Anniversary finale at the Yokohama arena in November. In addition to buying all their albums, I have attended two of their live concerts. Their live concerts are awesome. Everyone has so much fun. Well worth the ticket price. Also, we Band Maid fans refer to ourselves as Maidiacs.

there is more good rock in the US than anyone realizes, Foo Fighters are still kicking, Lilliac and Plush are good bands, Lilith Czar is a fun punk listen. There is pretty long list actually, its getting them promoted that is so damn hard. I mean Halestorm, Pretty Reckless we don't lack good bands we lack promotion. Just to damn many classic rock stations and not nearly enough dedicated to new rock.

Band-Maid, you just can't go wrong with any of their material. This one was good even though the audio mix coming into the recording wasn't the best for them...I've seen much better live recordings(not because of the band, but the audio mix). I wonder if it had to do with the constraints of the venue..because normally it's much better in my opinion. Really great group, super one to react with! 👍👍 oh, and the song is a powerful expression of the protagonist’s desire to end the relationship and move on and why it's titled 'Hate?'.
Great review and it is tough when you don't understand the language but there are a few instrumentals that you guys might enjoy. Onset live and From Now On MV. They add these instrumentals to their concerts to give Saiki a rest ( she had throat surgery a few years back) during their 2 hour concerts.

This was recorded and live streamed by Hulu as it happened, so the band wasn't able to control the way it was mixed, and Hulu didn't include any closed captions on it. As you can probably tell the director didn't really know which camera shots to use, since he completely missed the first bass solo, and was a little slow about switching between cameras. This concert was less than 12 hours after Band Maid performed a 2-hour concert at the "after-party" for Lollapalooza at a local venue in Chicago. The English lyrics are worth checking out and were basically written about a friend's husband cheating on her and was referring to the cheating husband.
Almost went to this show, but wound up going to the earlier Houston show instead. Went to NYC that week.
Hoping to see them again this year (if they play in America). Already seen them twice in the past few years!

The critics said after Lollapalooza that Band-Maid was by far and away the best rock group of the day. The crowd was small, because they were listed early in the afternoon.
It's not hard to see that Misa, the bassist, is my favorite member of the band.
Miku worked in a Maid Cafe and thought that a group in maid costumes playing hard rock would be great. The difference between the music and the costumes is called, "the gap."
Ah! I think you should really like the recently released version of "Hate?". It very well miked and it is a crazy audience and venue. And it has subtitles! Its their official live version. The girls are having fun! And the song is really about hate, no question-mark about that.
As for the songs meaning, and I could be mistaken as I heard this from another Reactor who speaks Japanese, Saiki wrote the lyrics about a guy who was in a relationship with a very good friend of hers. This guy was treating her friend in an abusive manner and she wanted to express her anger towards him. This is how she chose to do just that!

Kobato has a quirky sense of humor. She liked the idea of mashing something cute, but lame, like Japanese café maids, together with cool music - to try to make the lame stuff cool by extension. So now we have a band on a mission to make Japanese café maids Rock'N'Roll.
You may consider the maid outfit lame, but I guarantee Kobato never has.
The concert was streamed directly on HULU. Usually the maids have a good mix, so might be the TV-company who s*rewed up? Obviously they didn't know what hit them, since the producer was all over the place.
Yeah.. this was their second gig in 16 hours. They were playing +90 mins at a late night thing related to the festival. So It was early up next day to start the next dey on the "extended" stage, where all bands got an hour to play. I'm sure they were kind of busted after this.
Still: Rolling stone was at their last gig, and put it as one of the highlights of the festival.
Claiming that the musicianship was what most of the "customers" at the music stores thought they sounded like... but are outplayed by some cute girls in maid costumes.
And it's here the juxtaposition kicks in.
I don't understand the Japanese lyrics either. So, I just treat the vocals as another instrument. In a lot of ways, that is also how they write their songs. They pay a lot of attention to the tonal landscape. So much so that when they do an instrumental version of a song that normally has vocals, they will change up the instrumentation in such a way that it fills the tonal hole left by the absent vocal.
this was recorded and streamed by lalapalooza staff.. as you can tell by the instument break when they focused the camera on Akane on drums while Misa was ripping hard on the bass they didnt really know how to handle a Bandmaid performance.. id suggest checking out Puzzle live and Puzzle Accoustic live

You could afford to check out the lyrics so you would discover what the heck Saiki was singing about. Saiki wrote the lyrics ~ she's the lead singer. Miku usually writes the lyrics.

I think you two would enjoy From Now On ~ an instrumental that will make you twist and shout! If you continue to listen to BandMaid you will fall in love with Saiki and her voice. She commands the stage.
Watch NO GOD live if you really want to hear Misa go off on the bass. There's a solo that will blow your socks off.

If you liked this version(which didn't highlight when Misa & Kanami were rippin enough), then you will love the live version of Hate(which is blended in from Dice) on their 10th Anniversary Final Tour Yokohama Arena Live Concert. Misa & Kanami go out on a stage that extends to the crowd. They always do their best concert work in Japan(understandable since they have more equipment there). So Awesome!
From live performance to live performance the sound quality may vary. I've been to three Band-Maid shows and where you are in the audience you will hear different members more than others. The Live at Tokyo Zepp sounds so good to me, but Tokyo Garden Theater is like singing in an empty apartment.
Hate is a savage break up song, the English lyrics say enough "why don't you try to understand me?" Then "I don't care if you die out!"

Everything dialled up to 11 on this one. Yeah, the mix is what it is with this performance, which is a shame. As was the camera work but that's usually the case with festival set-ups. Never as good as when a band's team can set things up specifically for them.
Thank you for your reaction. After all this is not an official video, the sound quality of the video being less than desired, so the maids are not to blame for that part. I kind of disagree with suggesting everything live rather than music videos, and this is not even an official live, regardless of production quality. Not that is going to stop such suggestions but anyway, I don't favor it. I'm sure it was great to be in the audience live though but that is not what is being reacted to. Hate? is a great song, recommending the studioversion from the ep Unleash!!!!! So when we are at the topic, I suggest the title track from the EP, Unleash official MV;

Miku...founder of the band, Rhythm guitarist, lyricist worked in a Maid Cafe in Tokyo...wanted to merge the image of cute maids with melt your face rock so she found Kanami who brought in Akane who brought in MISA....Miku was originally the lead singer but felt her voice wasn't strong enough for the rock music she wanted to play so she stepped away from lead singer and brought in Saiki...and so the greatest live band was born.

I agree with you on how hard it is to understand the lyrics if you don't know the Japanese language. However, usually one third, and sometimes one half or even the entire songs is sung in English. And most of the time, if you click on "cc," you get the lyrics in English. And if all else fail, Band-Maid's English translations are available on various websites. Thx, Guys! 🤘😀
Band founder, Miku, used to work in a Maid Cafe' and wanted a Hard Rocking Band that would contrast with the Maid Look to create a visual Gap for the audience. BAND-MAID was not responsible for the bad sound and camera work.

Funny, I never even noticed whether they sing in English. I understand exactly what their songs are about: Music. And I'll take them over any American band playing today.
Another thing I read about this performance is that they did a show the night before that didn't end until 1:30 AM. If i am in error will someone let know. But if it is true, they are very driven to continue their domination of rock. You guys HAVE to see them live when they come to the US again. it will be an experience you will never forget.

The Maid costumes- In 2013, Miku (Red Rose), the Band founder/Lyrics/Vocals/Guitar, was working in a Maid Cafe in Tokyo, when she decided that she wanted to form a band and play "Cool music" ie. Rock. She had previously been in a JPop group called Lil Cumin, but didn't like the music. At the time she did not play guitar, but subsequently in 2014, was taught by Kanami (Lead Guitar). You are correct. This groove and melody on this particular recording of Hate? is not easy to pick out at first until the song develops. A few people have commented on that.
MISA and Kanami have what I call one of their "hold my beer" guitar battles in this song. MISA is my Mistress Of Thunder, her growling bass tone weaves through the songs and makes me very happy po 🎸❤🤘😄
The song , Hate , is about a friend of Saiki`s ( lead vocals ) who`s boyfriend cheated on her , Saiki wrote the lyrics for the song , as others have said , BAND-MAID had nothing to do with the mixing or sound that was done by the Lollapalooza people , same with the bad camera work , try the song Daydreaming , MV you will really hear Saiki`s vocals , MISA !!! The language barrier was so easy to get past with band maid because their talent was so obvious. Also im more drawn to Saiki's vocal tone/style as it stands out from most female fronted Japanese bands. Especially her tone. If you have followed band maid long enough you can see how they how significantly evolved and improved over the years and have pretty much proven they can do whatever style they want and somehow always pull it off amazingly.

Saiki wrote the song about someone who cheated on her friend during COVID, IIRC. It's basically Saiki telling the man what she thinks of him for doing that to her friend!
You have to remember that this recording is openair. They are responsible for the mix on their equipment, but the Venue is responsible for the recording. I agree it was a bad job on the Venue's part. It seems they never did a sound check to see what they were picking up. None of this is BM's fault. Try another version of this song.

Although Band Maid has managed to move from the "cult" to the "niche" level on the North American music scene -- and their fanbase continues to grow (though hardly as fast as it should) -- it remains true that, if you stop 100 Americans and ask them to tell you what they know about Band Maid, the three most common answers will be: (a) "It's a band-aid, man, what am I supposed to say about it?!"; (b) "What the hell is a Band Maid?"; (c) "I think that I've heard of them -- are they like Taylor Swift?". Band Maid at this stage remind me of the very early years of Linkin Park. They do every festival that they can, but they still have to go on fairly early, before most ticket-holders arrive. They play their set, and -- drawn by the music -- the crowd gets bigger (in other words, all of the "Why do you want to talk about band-aids for?" people start to be drawn in). By the end of Band Maid's 2023 Lollapalooza set, the crowd had more than doubled from that present at the beginning of the show. If Band Maid could ever get any real music industry/music media support In addition to Live Nation and UA-cam/Spotify, they would take off in North America. (I desperately hope that this happens before it's too late for the Ladies to get their due)!
Where is MISA? I hear her but I do not see her? OK - there she is! Sometimes the camera man is a bit off.
The sound quality is also a bit off.

Saiki, the lead singer wrote this song after she found out that her best friends husband was cheating, she asked Miku (band founder and main lyrics writer) for help but Miku said no, the subject is to dark and mean, so Saiki wrote the lyrics herself.
I agree. "Lollapalooza" _is_ fun to say. You can say it like "Lollallallalla paloooooooooza!" and "galoshes" and "blubber" and Bulbous Bouffant! *
Opinions about singers' voices might be one of the most personal opinions there are. You mentioned Geddy Lee with Rush - I adore Rush and have all their albums, but I've never been a big fan of Geddy's voice. I've gotten used to it over the years (and I think it got better) but in the earlier albums he was a high tenor, overly dramatic, with a wide vibrato that I didn't love. Saiki's voice is lower than a lot of Japanese women's voices, and darker and fuller. Miku is actually the better singer, but I like Saiki's voice more. About the only Japanese woman's voice I like more is Remi Matsuo with Glim Spanky, but she might also be "an acquired taste." More than anything, though, Saiki is a riveting persona on stage. The videos and fan cams don't do her justice. In person, she's hard to look away from.

Even the studio version of this song is dense, chaotic, and complex. Also, the audio mix in this recording is not great. I don't think it's a good place to guide new listeners to BAND-MAID.

If it sounds good to my ears, I will listen to it then look up the lyrics. It's enough that I know what the song is about.
Band-Maid does have some songs in English ! Don't Let Me Down" MV is a great song but a little spicy and "The Dragon Cries" MV ! I have to agree the production Quality wasn't the best but Misa (Bass Player) was outstanding as always ! Thanks Y'all ✌🤘

They didn't "introduce" the maid costumes. They were the original idea -- an important part of the core concept before anyone joined the band.
Miku, band founder, always wanted to start a band since high school. While in between singing jobs, she worked at a Maid Cafe, where she wore a maid costume and served food and drink, engaged with customers, and sang songs and danced. She enjoyed the entertainment and engagement -- and the frilly costumes. She decided that she wanted to use these ideas (minus the food and drink) in her idea about founding a band. And -- to top it off -- she wanted a band dressed as maids who played "cool music" (rock) ... not cutesy JPop. She wanted a "gap" between what people saw (frilly costumes) and what they heard (hard rock).
So she went to her talent management agency and told them her idea of a band of maids playing cool music. They OK'd the idea and she started recruiting. She found Kanami online, and told her about the idea. Kanami was fine with wearing a maid's costume -- she had worn one for a school performance -- and liked the music Miku wanted. Kanami knew a drummer -- Akane. Akane was cautious about the maid's costume, but liked the music and -- when she thought about Miku's idea of the contrast between maid costume and heavy music -- she could see the point. Akane knew a bassist, Misa. Misa was less happy about the maid costume but liked the music. After thinking about it, she agreed -- she was already a friend of Akane, and her old band had just broken up. But when they decided to recruit another singer -- Saiki -- they decided not to tell her about the costumes. Saiki heard the music, agreed to join .... and then found out about the maid costume just before their first performance on stage. She was tricked into joining! It was too late to pull out.
All the band members now accept the costumes as their "fighting clothes" -- their band uniform. They have customised them, so Saiki and Misa look less like maids than Miku and Kanami. Akane often looks more like a bell-boy, because playing drums is not so good when wearing a hat or skirt. They all have different footwear -- in Misa's case, no footwear but stockings. Saiki wears thigh-high boots. Miku wears thick platform shoes. Kanami wears "sensible" flat shoes. And Akane wears sports shoes.
There is always a disconnect between the Japanese language and an English speaking audience. I suggest you listen to "Puzzle", the official live video from their concert at Tokyo Rose theater with the English closed caption. There is also a live acoustic version of "Puzzle" from Tokyo. The lyrics of the two versions are the same but the feeling of the same song are VERY different.

I think the reason we love Hate so much is because the Maids have so much fun playing it. They get to go wild. Especially Saiki, since she wrote the lyrics. There are versions of cell phones that have better sound, this video of the live broadcast can already tell that it was bad just by seeing the direction in the cameras in the guitar and bass battle

The lyrics for Hate? were written by Saiki (Lead Vocals), and are basically about people who used Covid lockdowns as an excuse to have affairs and cheat on their partners. They recreated this version of Hate? at the Yokohama end of tour show, where the sound quality and camera work are WAY better than this.
There are English language rock songs that I have been hearing for 50+ years that I couldn't tell you a single line from. Or worse, you get celebrated songs like Bohemian Rhapsody where the lyrics are just nonsense. Rock songs are not about lyrics, not understanding the language shouldn't have any impact on your enjoyment. Download the translated lyrics beforehand if it matters. (Definitely worth it with Hate?, someone must have really pissed Saiki off, this was her first outing as lyricist and she was taking no prisoners).
Singing is music and language is not a barrier. As a Frenchman I like hearing foreign songs more and I look for their translation if I deem it necessary. Personally, I would like not to understand the words of certain French singers today because the kind of pseudo poetry they write is terrible and makes me cringe.
Guy dont bash the reactors for their opinion. They didnt really connect or like the song that much and its ok. They said they liked all the previous songs. Quite a few fans of Band-Maid have said the Unlesh EP was their least favorite B-M release. Not all songs are gonna stellar knockouts
Its not bashing it's just pointing out that music is a universal language and lyrics can be sung in other languages yet still be enjoyed. So i'd encourage this couple to open their minds because they'd miss out on a lot of fantastic music if they only listened to songs sung in english.
Even though this was recorded for Hulu for all the bands at Lollapalooza the mix was bad. Really bad. Also the crowd was smaller because it was a weekday and at 2pm.
I do not speak nor understand japanese nor any other language, so vocals are like another instrument to me. Even when some bady that sing english as their first language I don't always understand the words correctly. Just think about how many songs people sing the wrong words. My point being the vocal performance can sound great. not so great or suck completely, if it fits the music or not.
This is a terrible audio mix and camera work. I don't know why people suggest it other than the call and response of MISA (bassist) and Kanami (Lead guitar, composer, musical genius Mincho). The Bassist Picks, strums, slaps smacks and taps. Pay attention now!
Appreciate your candor. The audio for this video is pretty poor - not up to Band Maid's standards for certain. The camerawork is equally awful. Those hurdles aside, the band still found a way to shine. Love this performance but it's not something I'd recommend to a casual viewer.
You're right about one thing this is mixed horribly and the video was bad. Cameras pointing at the wrong places at the wrong time. I hate this version. They have a much much much much much much much much better one live from Yokohama Arena
HATE? is a song that is basically about a messy breakup from the woman's perspective, and I would hate to be the man that inspired Saiki to write this one. IF you look up the lyric translation you'll see why.
