Outstanding! Prepare for a journey unlike anything in Star Trek TOS or TNG, although you'll find that certain elements of BSG that gradually emerge over the course of the series are relatable to classic Trek tropes. It's a serial rather than episodic story, lengthy but with unexpected twists and turns (the writers love to subvert expectations), laced with dark drama and tragedy but interspersed with moments of breathtaking beauty and heart. The character arcs are complex and compelling, and the acting is consistently stellar. Finally, this watch will require patience, as BSG constantly puts new questions in your mind as it grudgingly answers old ones, until the last puzzle pieces ultimately fall into place in the three-part finale.

    • @MongooseTales
      @MongooseTales 4 місяці тому +5

By the way... One thing you guys will have to figure out as you work your way through BSG is how to deal with the half a dozen or so extended versions of key episodes. These are basically director's cut versions that were included on the series' Blu-ray release. So far as I know, only the shorter original versions of these episodes are available on streaming video.
Because of this disconnect, your Patreon members who want to see your complete BSG reactions and own the Blu-rays will likely advocate that you also purchase the Blu-rays (heck, some of them will probably offer to buy them for you), and that you view the extended versions while they watch along. However your other Patreon members who want to see your complete BSG reactions but only have access to the streaming episodes will likely ask that you view the streamed original versions, so they can watch along without having to buy the Blu-rays.
There's no right answer so you'll just have to work it out with your Patreon members. FWIW, FunnyLilGal released reactions to both the extended and original versions of these episodes to her Patreon members. Her editor Xander apparently started with her full-length reactions to the extended versions and cut each of them down to create full-length reactions to the original versions, so that members could choose to watch either.

2004 Battlestar Galactica was one of the "Gold Standards" of television at the time. It stands with The Sopranos, The Wire, Mad Men and Breaking Bad. The music, the acting, the directing was top shelf sci-fi. This show is as unpredictable as a series can get. One day you love a character. The next day you'll feel like they are a devil. Battlestar revolves around the gray center of morality. And it is a masterpiece.

The unique music, like most things in BSG, is meant to be very different from what you might expect from typical space opera (Trek, Wars, etc), easily setting it apart from what especially at the time might have seemed overdone or obvious, like people just thought there was only ever one way of presenting stories like this.
Most things about BSG are challenging traditional space stories of the time in ways I won't spoil, but that's part of why I was hoping you wouldn't get to this show for a WHILE.

The lore of Battlestar is that everything that has happens before will happen again, as it is often said in the show. But in each new iteration of the universe has people playing slightly different roles in it. That lore naturally opens the door for endless reboots and it still fits.

I can't remember his name, which really bugs me, but one of the reasons that I really liked him is on the actual TV series, there's a scene where he's rapid firing a gun from the hip and if you actually watch his eyes, he never blinks or flinches once when he's shooting. If you've ever shot a gun, you'll know that blinking and flinching is a natural human response and the fact that he was able to overcome that natural response shows just how much he's actually shot guns before.

The really cool thing about this show is how many surprises they throw in, in virtually every episode. This is one of the greatest TV shows (not just Sci Fi) ever made. My only concern is that if they watch the BSG reboot alongside TNG, that BSG might overshadow and impact their enjoyment of TNG. Since, BSG is better than TNG, imho. And since, they are planning on watching ST: DS9 after they finish TNG, it might be a better fit to twin DS9 with BGS instead. Since both series are more similarly matched in terms of their tone and story-telling. But either way, there's no chance they don't enjoy the BSG reboot, whenever they decide to watch it. Like you said, it's undoubtedly one of the best shows made. Oh, and I also watched the original BSG reruns as a kid growing up in the 80s.

I had SO much fun, watching you two speculate, and kept saying, "Oh, gurl...." and laughed to myself. "If you only knew." This entire thing is AMAZING. And when you get done, watch "Caprica," the pre-quel. If you don't end up... damn. I will hold off. No spoilers...... BTW, framing, I am 56, dad the OG Sci-Fi fan, who got me hooked, starting with Star Trek and Space: 1999. And then, there was the original BSG, and the reboot of Buck Rogers. Dudes. I have experienced the fulsome history of this genre. You are in for the most amazing ride. I promise.
Oh, btw, the original Baltar, I hated that mo-fo. As a gay kid, I was just realising what people thought about people like me in 1978. I can't find it right now, because I can't recall the news guy's name, but one of the major networks did a "special" allegedly on gay men in America. The reason why people were supposed to find some guys funny, and others evil, was based on the hidden homophobia. Baltar, the guy who played him, was gay, and acted campy in his role, like "Uncle Arthur" in "Bewitched." Those guys were all I had to reference back then. That sucked. We were either predators, or the butt of jokes, as "feminine." Sounds like how people on the Right still think today, huh? Sci-Fi always gave me hope, or at least diversion. Trek gave the hope, till the more recent series, which try too hard for action over inter-cultural and personal character development. BSG, the reboot? It gives me hope to be re-booted, I wanna be a Cylon. Upload me. I need a new body about now.
P.S. THE SOUNDTRACK, THO. Just sayin'.

I have the Blu-ray box set and rewatch every few months. If you liked the pilot mini series you’ll love the rest. They keep the original idea but not trapped to it or just copy. The reboot has more grit to it (the rag tag fleet) rather than everything being clean.
Lots of character development all the way through all seasons with some flashbacks for context.
The shaky cam style took a a few episodes to get used to but works and is usually only in action shot to pull you in to being part of it.
I can’t believe it’s 20 years. The CGI doesn’t look dated or forced.

Regarding science fiction after the 90's star trek this show was huge, it was fot tv scify the equivalent of the original SW for science fiction movies.

Had a previous comment but looks like UA-cam ate it so not going to go back through the spiel I had, but wanted to also comment that I don't know if you picked up on it or not but Adama's speech at the decommissioning/retirement ceremony was not the one he had planned. He went off script (not in reality, but in so far as his prepared remarks) after his confrontation with Lee.
BSG 2005 is one of my favorites for character acting, some really good performances throughout the show and the minimalist music was extremely unusual for the time for this type of show.

Six and the baby; in her mind, it was a mercy, since she knew what was coming (well, in progress, really); note her face- she was NOT happy, but felt it was, again, a mercy.
"This is what we do. We're the best..." DUDE, not even close. I mean, yeah, you wanna pump up your guys, but let's be real- the old arse ship heading into retirement isn't the primo posting, and not where the best of the best are getting assigned.
The "hacking"; Six gained access to the CNP (Colonial Navigation Program; think Space GPS) and put a backdoor into that. Now, imagine how many connected systems GPS is connected to right now... and what that being a hacking vector would mean (especially to an antagonistic AI).
Boxey's dad? He was the officer in the first few minutes before the title (if you look at the photos on the desk)
And wait until you watch 33 (the first episode) - oh, you ARE going to, we know you are. Even if you don't "react" to it, you're not sleeping on it after that pilot...

As with many, I saw the ‘78 series right after Star Wars came out so it was great to have the ‘new’ type of sci fi on TV. Although I think it was hindered by the formula format of every other Glen Larson production and most 70’s and early 80s TV series that were more of the weekly episodic style with a lot of happy, slap on the back endings.
I think the best way to look at this is, like others have said; Reimagined, not re-booted.
The names and general premise is all that is used and comparing anything to the original will detract. It pays homage where necessary but this is more gritty and I don’t think its meant to be futuristic. Kinetic weapons instead of lasers and other grounded issues, like you mentioned with the ‘end of the world’ talk. This telling just seems much more dire and hits home that 50,000 out of billions are all that remain. I never got that from the ‘78 series. It’s like today’s Earth was attacked and only 1 small town is all that remains and they deal with that type of reality.
Hope you decide to watch the series!

The CGI team was fresh off of Firefly. Everything they did was state of the art, then & they continue to improve.
Ronald D Moore broke into the industry with TNG but was part of the DS8 writing crew. He's ex-navy & wanted it to be real military.
Watch the next episode. It ratchets up the stakes and tensions, tremendously.
This is a cynical universe and that greatly directed the characters and plots as the show unwinds.
Bear McCreary comes in with the regular series, creating a great score for the rest of the run.
The skin jobs come from Galactica 1980. It's the only plot point to carry over from that atrocity. It was a budget consideration but, the bullet heads play their part. The Cylons are really interesting.
    All of them.

For me, the series was more "reimagined" (although it stuck to the mythology and basic characters etc) , than a simple "remake". When Star Gate tried to capture the darkness and mood of BSG 2004 in their remake it did not succeed , So, it was a lot more than just one element that made BSG 2004 as great as it was.
