Brings me back. Havent touched auto body since class in '04. Needed a refresher before I do my fender. Thanks!
Very well articulated! Nice to listen to someone who knows what they are doing and being able to listen to a video that is professional in its presentation. A major plus to have a presenter you can clearly understand.
Layman here.
I'm about to undertake Power Pole on Passenger Side Roof repair on my 2007 Dodge Nitro 4X 4 ... 'Rocky Mountain Edition' ... christened as such from now on. I just want it straight enough to install a new windshield and get it street legal again.
Your video really goes into talking about the metal and how to "read the damage" and the metal characteristics and reactions to the manipulation techniques- as well as techniques to work the metal.
Very informative! Best 'How To' video I've seen thus far.
I've spent most my life in Autobody industry (lic.)and give this video a thumbs up for it's clear and accurate tutorial on diy fenderbender.
Thanks
maritimer Man really👏👏👏😀👏😀😀👏😀nice . do u also think that u restore cars because u paint them and charge customers over 17 grand like if u do interior drive train and electrical on the cars 😀👏😀👏😀👏😀😀👏😀👏😀🍿😀👏😀👏😀😀👏👏👏👏👏

Well done. You have taken a lot of the mystery out of body shop repair. I took a body shop class and, for our first project, our instructor gave us fenders (removed and replaced) he collected from body shops in the area. If the fender didn't have enough damage, he would "adjust" the damage to give us more of a challenge.
Thanks a lot, Tom
Thanks Donnie! This brought light to the difficulties I've been having.
I actually found this video to be quite helpful even as a PDR technician. Especially in understanding the fundamentals of traditional metalworking. Thank you for keeping it easy to understand for all of us!
This man is the best instructor on You Tube re: auto body work. Thank you sir for all your uploads.
Thank you for your kind words. That motivates me.
What about trevs blog?
I LOVE the FACT that a SOUTHERNER is the MOST KNOWLEDGABLE and ARTICULATE on all of UA-cam about auto body repair!!
The "confessions of a car nut" guy is good too.
haha...thanks for watching.
Excellent video that explains clearly and simply how to cope with dents. Excellent teacher giving honest comments.
Really liked your video. So many bodymen now days just know how to grind and fill Instead of bring the dent out so you don't have a lot of mud on your job. I know Money is the bottom line but it seems that the price of labor in todays market makes it so a lot of body parts are just thrown away instead of repaired. Very good instructor for this video. This man has paid his dues as far as learning is concerned. Thank You
What an excellent tutorial on how to use the various techniques to repair metal. Thank you.
I'm glad you found the video useful. Thanks for watching. I have an entire lesson on metal straightening at www.collisionblast.com/dent-repair/ you may also find useful.
I like the way he explains things while he works on it. also he gives little tips on the job. Thanks friend for sharing.
You're welcome...thanks for watching!
does this work fot chrome as well?
Awesome explanation of hammer on and off dolly! I'm in a Collision Refinishing course right now, and can't wait to learn more! Thanks for the video!!
thank you for making metal work easy to understand.
Just came across your videos... I have painted a few cars and a bumper or two, but I have never attempted dent repair and blending. I was searching blending techniques when I found your blending video from, like 6 years ago. Wonderful video. This video on working a dent was also very helpful! I have paid for membership to other DYI paint and body repair groups, and I learned a lot, but your videos go just a bit further into detail - and explain the "why" as well how and when... Thanks for the quality content.
Thanks Donnie, wish I'd seen this years ago. Would have saved me many hours of shrinking and filling. Keep the great vids coming. Cheers from Australia.
Hi Bob, I'm glad you found the video useful. I've never been to Australia, but I think it would be a cool place to visit!
Hey Donnie, I want to thank you for teaching me the basics on old school tools which are the bread and butter for beaters. Thanks Mate
Great video man , your one of the best teachers out there , simpel and good advice ,keep it up ,greets from belgium
Great Vid very informative, ill be trying your techniques thanks from Australia,
IM repairing some minor damage to my 930 , i want to do bare metal repair on all so i can see there is no rust or other damage underneath, so far so good :)
Thank you so much Donnie for spending time that you didn't have to.. To teach us young bucks how to hone and sharpen our skills.
You're welcome...thanks for watching!

everything I learned in collision repair and refinishing class is right here to refresh the memory
+Salvador Hernandez Thanks for watching
Why is everybody complaining he is just showing how to take the dent out doing the regular way a body shop would do it . Of course he knows that he could have PDR it. . People stop being so quick to judge.
Thanks for the video, best one on dent repair I've seen so far.
Best video covering this subject on UA-cam!!
Thanks!
I normally put something thin over the body hammer so you don't damage paint if you haven't already sanded it.
this guy is great he now his stuff you can learn from this guy easy
Great video Donnie, no doubt about that. However, I see that the inner side of the dent is accessible. Therefore my question is how would you straighten the dent in the metal is not accessible from the inside, leaving you only with outside approach?
Thanks and keep up the good work
Heat and PDR would have this fixed without paint in a few minutes for under $200.
I really wished body shops would embrace more subtle repair methodologies.
You're an excellent teacher! Informative, easy to listen to, and very good explanations. If you get tired of bodywork, you could go back to school and teach! 😊
Donnie Smith is a pro...and a natural teacher. Pleasure to watch!
+TheJoeman11 Thanks for watching!
You could not have explained it better. You covered everything without making it too complicated. You're doing good work by continuing the education on a trade that many believe to be slowly dying. I hope not but they say someday every kind of panel will ship already painted ready for a minimum wage worker to bolt on. Robots will do the straightening of underlying structures. Who knows.
Yeah, I agree....who knows what the future holds for automotive repair....changing fast. Already hard to keep up with. Thanks for watching.
This is fascinating, total artistry!
Thanks for this excellent lesson!
Very helpful!
Yes, hammer and dolly only work if you can access both sides of the panel. If you can't, different methods such as a stud welder gun must be used. Type "ABRN How TO Use A Stud Welder Gun To Fix Dent" for an demonstration of how that works. Thanks for watching!
Glad you enjoyed the video...thanks for watching!
Nice video, thanks so much.
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
what is the best tool for wheel arch metal that is best / crumbled
Are you talking about rolling the wheel opening flange?
You're Welcome!
Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge. Much appreciated
Can you by any chance provide us/ me in particular a video showing how to reach inaccessible areas? I will really appreciate that.
Thank you! this helpes me alott, you are very good at explaining.
The 80 grit sandpaper is kinda confusing. Isnt sandpaper used to smoothen out an area, not really add a fine powder? also, where can I buy a cheap version of that 80 grit? (I am new to all this repair stuff since I will be working on my first car)
Outstanding work man!!
I learned a lot on a short period of time.
Great video, thanks for taking the time to share it.
cheekygit2002 You're welcome, thanks for watching!
How about a video on tail light repair for housing and lens when new parts or old parts are hard to come by. Is there a company that can remake lens or housings?
My 1973 Chevrolet C20 Custom Deluxe 454 3/4 ton truck has some really thick sheet metal, I'd say twice as thick as a new car! Any advice on straightening sheet metal this thick other than hammer harder?
Hello can any one tell me were I can purchase some quality sanding blocks like the ones in the vid thanks !!
step preparations for fixing a large rust hole.I was told to use long strand fiberglass then use short strand. Then to use body filler. Is this correct way what is your advice.
hi i have not seen all your videos but can you do a video on how to fix flaking clear coat
on a hood thanks
Excellent video.
donnie. Your videos are so informative and awesome!!!! you rock man
Thank you for your informative videos. You guys are awesome!!!
Ian Odeon You're welcome, thanks for watching!
Great video and great tips
Good job again!
hey Donnie so super random question here I defff wanna learn how to do this stuff do you think maybe a body shop would help me with the damages they throw out or what do you suggest
Thanks Donnie, your instructions are awesome! ~ Kent ~
Can you tell me how to bend metal back toward a car around the back tire. 😭 My car rolled into a tree yesterday and it's all kinds of jacked up.
Great video. Very informative.
I have a high area in my dent repair that I just can't seem to lower. I have tried and tried. Would it be possible to blend that in with body filler?
It may blend in, but I bet you are going to fight it, as it will keep sanding through. Have you tried to heat shrink the area?
Great video, great info! Thanks!
I would have tried PDR first before doing the bodywork depending on the customers budget......
nice tip donnie
very well explained thank you!
great video
Good info! Thanks
Thanks Donnie!
Great video. Thank you!
I just bought a 2007 Mustang and the hood on the passenger side has a bend causing the hood to be about 1 inch high on that side only. I guess it was in a fender bender accident. What would be the best way to get that bend out? I thought about propping the front of the hood up a little and using my knee and put my weight on the bend spot. Thanks
I have used 2x4s to hold the panel in place while I push down on the highs.
@@CarAddictGarage I took the hood off, laid it on the hard ground and stood on it.(I weigh 175 lbs) Was able to bend it about 1/2 inch only. Will try again in the springtime. Thanks
nice video nuff respect
Thank you so much for your work. I recently got into this business. Thank you for helping me learn. EddieGood People
Good video brother!!!
your measuring filler with the inch scale ? my max is the thickness of a dime
No matter the kind of car you own, be it a swanky new SUV or a budget car you would get dents on it due to wear and tear. These dents often make the car look ugly and spoil the look of the vehicle and there are DIY techniques to repair the dents. This can save you a lot of money which you might spend if you decide taking your vehicle to a garage.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for this. Much appreciated.
dolly? I can't find that little thing to use with hammer. what is that call?
Yes Mark i agree,im from oz working metal for 45 years.
You just cant teach people how to do these things on a video.
It takes many years to master the trade.
Id say that would depend on your IQ level, some people learn overnight, ,
I picked up a spraygun the first time a week ago , watched some vids now ive almost finished doing a bare metal respray on my car, Its not rocket Science , I reckon If it takes some many years to master id say they are probably not interested in the subject rfom the beginning
Yeah there easy to pick up but can you apply good even coats, its got nothing to do with iq
you just run horizontal then vertical spray patterns and that would even out your coats. I watched how it is done many times and feel confident.
Could you have used a leather wrapped wood slapper and dolly to paint less repair this?
Paintless dent repair
an important tip... you don't hit hard with the hammer
I view many times amateurs that spoil completely their job because they hit too hard !
The book isn't available anymore, is there a way for me to get one?
+Ruth Willhite Sure, go to www.collisionblast.com/dent-repair/ and you can read it all there. Thanks for watching.
You could have used some 2000 or 3000 grit to find the "high's and lowes," but NO, you jumped right to 80 and ripped ALL the paint off down to bare metal.
there is also dentless paint repair but i think he was explaining the industry standard as far as paint shops are concerned this is the easiest way. because they have the equipment to quickly fill and paint. blessings
Val Tito oh hell, dentless paint repair, who would have thunk it!!! Idiot.
Why would you ruin the paint with sanding, filler and repaint when PDR would have been an excellent technique here? It's overkill I cringed when the sanding started!
Les Zapata this was 4 years ago.
This can be done using PDR glue and tools in just 15 mins of work without painting! WTF?
we learning how to use hammer and dolly here , pdr is for another lesson.
without painting... lmfao.. you do know that sheet metal can stretch when it's dented right?... good luck fixing that without respraying
PDR would smash this repair in 10 mins
On a slightly different angle, I just really wonder why, it seems NO ONE can show me how to straighten warped sheet metal after being media blasted....my hood is out about 1/32th of an inch....SO many people have experienced this problem...now do YOU have the know how to show us how to do this?.....a challenge to your supposed expertise....
If you do know how, I'd love to see your ability here.
+SSGTA440 Depends on the car. I'm trying to fix a car blasted by a guy who mostly did patio furniture, so I know what you mean. If it's really warped up, and replacement panels are easily available, new or used, it would be best to start over with straight metal. Another option is to guide coat then block sand the car to find all the highs and lows, then work the metal. Since blasting with some medias will hardens metal, you will probably not be able to get it 100% with hammer and dolly, and will end up having to shrink the worst of the high spots and fill the lows. At best it will be a compromise between burying the warpage with filler and killing yourself chasing all the waves out. Media blasting is something that people have to learn about the hard way, and a lot of nice cars have been killed by hacks using the wrong stuff or bad technique.
Did you have to ruin the paint ? Modern techniques include using light
Yes, this demonstration requires repainting. You are referring to Paintless Dent Repair. That is a different repair method.
How much this cost?
The paint, was dent guy could have gotten that. Without sanding.
This must be HackNpack's younger and less barfbagish brother!
PDR
I never realized taking a body file to a honda was wrong... I guess my 1962 metal straightening literature is a little out dated.
😀😀👏😀👏😀😀👏😀😀👏im takin a shit more often to watch UA-cam more 😀👏😀👏😀👏😀👏this is great this is great😌😌😣😣😌
was here.
Man I wish y’all was down south. These body companies down here don’t know what they’re doing.
What a shame! That repair was a perfect candidate for PDR. 😂
It would be nice if the adjoining lesson to read went by a bit slower.
From 5:40 to 7:10 where the camera is shooting at? Was interesting till that part distracted me. Some people just can't use the camera option, because is part of a cellphone doesn't mean they should use it. Make another video man, this time with better shoots, use someone from college BA in Telecommunications, that will help you look better ;)
