Thanks for a very good video describing an excellent strategy for organizing BOD and committees. I am quite new to Salesforce, and I struggled with what to do. Finally, last week, I worked out exactly the strategy you described (a hierarchy of accounts).
It was helpful to watch your video for affirmation of the approach I had adopted. You suggestions on reporting were also helpful
My only suggestion is that you make your organization the "parent" of the Board Group, which logically ties things together and makes the group easy to get to via hierarchies.

Thank you for your detailed feedback. I am so glad the strategy worked well for you. And yes, I agree with your suggestion! I went back and watched the video again and saw that I didn't add the organization account as the parent to the board account. Thank you for pointing that out.
      Thanks,
      Farah

We track board giving differently. In my org we have revenue generating and non-revenue generating campaigns. Among our revenue campaigns can be direct requests (email campaign), Events, and general fundraising. And we want to know what the board donations are for, not that they are just board donations. i.e. Board Member Fred bought a table for the gala event--it would go on the event's campaign.
We are using a non-revenue campaign type, "Board", to track our board members. FY19 Board is the main campaign, and in the hierarchy, the various committees (such as Communications) of the Board of Directors are sub-campaigns to the FY19 Board. Using formulas and Process Builder, we automatically flag a field on the contact record (Board Status = Current). Then we can use Opportunities with Contacts to pull all the opportunities for people who are current board members.
Just another way to do things :)

This is great, thanks so much for sharing Tracey! Another reason why I love Salesforce, there is more than one way of doing things and depending on the org you can customize how you track your various constituent types.
Quick question for you: Regarding your solution of using process builder and formula fields to update your board status field to track current (and I'm assuming also former) board membership, can you explain the logic behind that further for those who may read this in the future and may want to set something similar up in their org?

@@signiforce Not very well LOL. My consultant helped set it up. It's a combination of formulas and DLRS's. We added fields to the Campaign Member screen, such as Current? to signify a current board member, based on the dates (start/end dates). Then based on that field, we used a formula reference to populate the contact record "Board Status" field:

      IF ( CurrentBoardCmps__c > 0, IMAGE("bigthought--c.na47.content.force.com/servlet/servlet.ImageServer?id=0154A000023gbxt&oid=00D46000000qIgA&lastMod=1553177335000", "Current Board Member") ,
      IF ( PrevBoardCmps__c > 0 , IMAGE("bigthought--c.na47.content.force.com/servlet/servlet.ImageServer?id=0154A000023gbxy&oid=00D46000000qIgA&lastMod=1553177320000", "Prior Board Member") , "" ) )
We actually have it set up so that a graphic appears at the top of the Contact record if they are a current or prior board member. But we can use the same field to pull the related opportunities (Board Status contains current).

How would you email all of the Affiliated Contacts on a committee?

Hi David, you will need to create a Contact report with a cross filter for Contacts with Affiliations with the name of the committee. Once you have the report, you can add all the contacts to a campaign and then send a list email.
I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

How do you run a report showing the Committee details?
