The irony is, Gura likely did not get the choice to be a blue shark herself. It was almost certainly assigned to her.
I do believe that it is her choice or she influenced it. Her past persona was linked to her current form. just google or yt search is gura =sen~~~~ like finding easter eggs.
Actually, the talent has very little, if any, say on the characters' appearance. Since Cover Corp is the parent company of Hololive, the company owns the character of Gawr Gura, and everything that the character is involved in, which includes all matter of merchandise, promotional artwork, etc. etc.
It's mainly fans that call other VTubers that happen to be sharks or blue a "gura clone."

Yeah. It was revealed a while ago that she got to choose basically nothing about her model, not even her skin colour.
@@Twisted_Jaysome organisations let their talent choose their characters, probably less likely for hololive considering the monolith they are and I know some of their older and smaller generation talents don’t get a choice for certain, but there’s still a chance that holomyth got to choose.

Yet there a hundreds of rabbit vTubers when there is an insanely iconic top rabbit.
There are some rabbit vtubers who have had to deal with people calling them a "Pekora Clone", "Walmart Pekora", or "Bargain Pekora".
Still sharktubers probably get it worse since anime sharkgirls are a lot more niche than rabbitgirls. Combine that with Gura's massive success, it's easy to see why people automatically make comparisons whether or not it's fair.

It's getting to such a ridiculous level with the Gura copy accusations that some vtubers have banned the words Gura, Gawr, and Gawr Gura in any combination in their chat, because people would spam them with "You look like Gura, you copied her!!" and stuff like that.
I know Yuko Yurei had troubles with that during her first streams and a bit during her debut, despite them having two vastly different themes.
Also Gura baerly uses her hood anymore so I don't understand why every vtuber with a hoodie is a Gura clone

Artemis may have been a horrible accident but Yuko and Shy definitely did it to themselves. Yuko billed heself as a big fan, tried to buy membership and chum-up with goober's chat. Shy copied the 'shrimp' motif wholesale and even parroted last year's tweet from the shork's old twitter account.
There is a kind of tribalism where fans love it when someone like Fauna heaps praise on the gremlin, but if an outsider does it they smell chum in the water.
I remember my friend's reaction when Gura debuted. He had the idea of being a shark vtuber for a while. He was actually pretty successful, though he stopped vtubing after a year.

I would say that's true for those who follow the Vtuber scene in general, but I feel like it depends on the platform. UA-cam and Twitch have very different audiences, in my opinion. People in Twitch would probably recognize Ironmouse more.

This is true for any big vtuber in my experience. Annoying fans/kids that go around asking everyone if they know their favorite vtuber, and that's all they'll talk about. Saw it a million times when Shylily blew up, same with Filian, and same with Neuro, just for recent examples.

To be honest why are not, list random animals here, vtubers. There are thousands of different animals and moving away from the common pets like rabbits, dogs and cats you are going to reach for more of a niche. The odds are more likely inversed, their is an un expected number of shark and aquatic themed vtubers because of gura.

I actually had a shark oc that i was gonna use to do vtubing long before gura even debuted. I had this idea back when Kizuna Ai was starting to bring popularity to the trend, and i never really had the funds or circumstances to make this thing happen until just a few years back.
However, thanks to gura's popularity, my orginal idea of being a shark vtuber is now completely gone and i fear I'll just be looked at as another clone. I'm not too sure what to do at this point, since all the conceptualizations and art are already set in stone..

If you're a shark you're Gura, if you're an orca you're Shylily, if you're a moth you're Juniper, and if you're a cat you're Nyanners. People have trouble seeing past a basic pattern, and it creates a lot of headaches both for vtubers and longtime fans.

I get it, 'the ocean' is associated with the colour blue, so it's a tempting colour combination to go with, but to be fair, there have been other vtubers that have also tried to go with the smol blue shark/ocean creature motif and it's.... well, Gura doesn't own the concept, but it seems awfully coincidental that they're choosing a lot of the same themes as the most popular vtuber in the world and not a lesser known more unique concept, or without even their own unique twist on it.

Funny thing is how pathetically shallow people are, Pekora and Miko might be much more influential than Gura in the JP vtubing sphere and their view counts are excellent. This is mostly a bunch of EN casuals trying to manipulate western vTubing fandom for their own entertainment. Gura's just the brand being used as a strawman.
No, I wouldn't say so. I'm sure they helped, but the indie vtuber explosion started before HoloEN all debuted. If you watched Twitch, the indie vtuber scene started blowing up months beforehand.
That's when the likes of the VShojo members viewer-counts blew up, like Ironmouse and Nyanners shooting from just around 100 viewers, to thousands, and steadily grew from there, similar happening to the rest of the group, leading to them all founding VShojo the month before HoloEN debuted.
The real cause of it all, was COVID. Everyone was stuck in their houses with nothing to do, so we all just sat on the internet. That led many to just watching streamers or even becoming one themselves, and eventually coming across vtubers and getting sucked in as it was such a new and interesting thing.

Gura is like the Re:Zero Rem of hololive. She's such an economic powerhouse of the franchise, that she could be distinguished as a separate entity

There's only so many concepts in the world that exist and the majority of them have already been adopted as a Vtuber model at this point, so overlap is going to happen and it's pretty much unavoidable - as long as you make your persona unique and you're not just cloning someone else's model to intentionally trick viewers, that's what should matter.
I doubt Gura is being kept up at night about other people having shark Vtuber models, the only people who care are the rabid fans who are addicted to Hololive and are the ones most likely to take such an issue with someone using an animal or a character trope already assigned to a Vtuber they like that they spam that "copycat" with hate messages, and those are the folks we really shouldn't be giving the time of day to.
There's nothing wrong with having a shark or whale or orca or anything else as the design for your Vtuber model if it looks unique and identifiable from a line-up, and anyone who does think it's a problem and makes it their hill to die on is making a mountain out of a molehill.
I wouldn't mind there being other shark vtubers or the like, I mean I love Shylily (not a shark but eh), and yes Gura is the most popular vtuber in the world, doesn't mean we can't have other shark or fish themed vtubers. I love Gura, and many other vtubers, they're all very fun to watch. What I think is most important is the personality of a vtuber, rather than just their design, Gura's design is cute yes, but her personality is what makes her so beloved.

Shylily isn't a Gura clone. Lily is so awesome. Just like Gura. They're both unique and awesome. And even if someone says Lily's a clone, that one has no idea then. If there're VTubers who say "I stopped being an aquatic VTuber because of Gura" it actually means "I stopped because I can't handle people telling me I'm just a copycat"

Its 100% just children doing that. Gura is a popular vtuber especially with children. Theres a ton of rabbit vtubers despite the most iconic rabbit vtuber Pekora being around and they arent really called Pekora clones because Pekora isnt all that popular with kids.
Here's the hole in that theory though, both bao and shylily hit just about every checkpoint on that list and I have yet to hear anyone call them or compare them to gura.
& this frankly speaks volumes of the charisma of Gura, if you know of her you're constantly reminded of her when you see shark, blue or sea creatures.

It’s not so different from all those cat, rabbit, fox, etc. vtubers, you may argue that those also copied from big vtubers, but what’s the point? The looks attract the views, but it’s the person behind the avatar that makes them stay. As long as the avatar is not literally the same for copyright reasons, I think the creators themselves (gura included) don’t really care if the theme of the avatar is pretty much the same, especially considering that these models are just given to them and they have to fit into the character

Being the biggest V-Tuber by far is most certainly gonna make comparisons happen more often, which is why we don't see Pekora and Lopi compared, despite the shared gremlin energy and rabbitness.
This can be extended beyond creators, and beyond vtubers. People will always compare people to the best example of a person they can think of, so being inspired by that person and taking on aspects that remind people of them, intentionally or unintentionally, will always 'invite' these comparisons.
