    Spokane, Portland, and Seattle 700 is the last original SP&S steam locomotive. A large 4-8-4 Northern, she was only saved from scrap because the railway did not wish to be outdone by Union Pacific, who were donating one of their own engines to the city of Portland. 700 would be saved, and eventually restored, becoming a well-known preserved steam locomotive of the Pacific Northwest.

    "Spokane, Portland & Seattle 700 is the oldest and only surviving example of the class "E-1" 4-8-4 "Northern" type steam locomotive and the only surviving "original" (not purchased used from another railroad) Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway steam locomotive. It was built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in May 1938. Nearly identical to the class "A-3" Northerns built for Northern Pacific Railway, it burns oil instead of coal."

    I have always wanted to see 700 in person. She was the very first non-Thomas the Tank Engine steam locomotive I’ve ever seen when my dad got me a Berkshire Productions vhs tape to watch when I was 7 years old. I’ve been hooked onto trains ever since, and it wasn’t long before I found a new passion for the Lehigh Valley steam fleet.

      Yeah too bad LV didnt give a damn about any of there locomotives so none of there steam engines survived and the preservation movement wasnt organized at the time enough to save any....in fact i dont know of any attempts...Also what make 700 more special is that she is the same as NP 4-8-4s which were the first 4-8-4s!And while non of theres survived this one was part of the class except it was to there subsidary SPandS and when they saved it they saved a loco of historical significance as a member of the first 4-8-4 class and locomotive of 2 railroads.

    • @derekthelehighvalleyfoamer4427
      @derekthelehighvalleyfoamer4427 5 місяців тому

      @@vaclavmacgregor2464 Well the LV may not have gave two craps about their steam fleet in preservation, but I’m more so fond of what they did while they still existed in revenue service, especially their streamlined K-5 Pacific’s. I also like the LV diesels that *are* still with us. I’m also a local of where the LV used to run, so I kind of have a right to love this railroad

    • @vaclavmacgregor2464
      @vaclavmacgregor2464 5 місяців тому

      @@derekthelehighvalleyfoamer4427 Yeah and none of the LV were saved by LV themselves only by there succesor railroad.I wondere why there was not a single person of power on the LV who cared in the slightest about anything they ran.I must admit the K-5 were maginificent and just show that it was the time of the best locomotives,best rollingstock,best service and best limiteds making locomotives that were locomotives!Not generic Boxes which all look alike and are generic.Also can i reccomend some great movies to you?(by genre you name it and i tell you some great films from it i know that you prob dont).Also seeing as that there is practically nothing left of the LV fleet im afraid overtime it will fall into obscurity and be less mainstream because there wont be much tangible to its history...something that lasts forever.

    Sumpter valley railway 19 (narrow gauge mikado) was actually restored to operation inside the Brooklyn roundhouse next to 4449 and the 700
    And then during one of the Portland union station celebrations they actually relaid a portion of track as narrow gauge so the 19 could run there while 4449 and the 700 were on display at Union station
    So the 700 is actually slightly connected to a narrow gauge locomotive as well

    I've seen 700 twice in steam in my lifetime. The first time I was 12 and she came down to my hometown for an Operation Lifesaver event at a park that had a siding next to it. I stood in line with my dad to climb in the cab for a look. The second time was back in 2014, some freinds of mine and I went to the Oregon Rail Heritage Center's Holiday Train excursion and rode behind the 700, as the 4449 was under rebuild at that time. We stood 20 feet from the 700 when she was coing to the station stop, and I know I got some hearing damage (totally worth it) when the whistle was blown. I will never forget that beautiful deep tone whistle.
    The 700 has a special place in my heart as she is the first steam locomotive I got to climb in the cab, and the first steam locomotive I got to see in steam in person. I've seen the 3985 in person when it came to Portland, Or, but it wasn't in steam, or the cab was open to look in.

    It's a shame that there aren't any surviving NP A-3s (let alone ANY Northern Pacific 4-8-4s in general). Luckily, SP&S 700 is the closest that we have to a Northern Pacific A-3. Heck, I hope that, maybe, in the future, when, or if, SP&S 700 runs again, that she's painted as a Northern Pacific A-3 for a special event.
    Speaking of Northern Pacific, all we need now is a video dedicated to NP 328.

You should look up 4070 too, Darkness. You might find her fascinating, as well. She was even technically a Jensen locomotive at one point.

    • @hammer1349

      I think it has to do with the connotations of "x of the night" generally being ladies and their "services" not exactly being publicly friendly. Princess of the Night might make her sound like a very expensive and well working lady of the night, which for a well known steam locomotive is not something anyone wants it to be associated with.
