- Okay, so what if the steam locomotives DON'T have articulation but are still really strong? No Big Boys or Yellowstones here. These are the classic style of steam engine powerhouses. Also, they're all American. That isn't on purpose. It just happens to be that way.

I really enjoy seeing someone so passionate about preservation. It's such a shame about Madame Queen and I hope she gets put into better circumstances soon!

With the 9000s being number five, that means numbers 1-4 are all...
OVER NINE THOUSAND!!!!!11
Best train video so far nobody on here has done this before
History In the dark did a while ago.
Idk where that channel might be, i did hear his vids were preatty good tho
Im from Pittsburgh Pa B&LE 643 sat in the old P&LE shops till a snow storm had the roof cave in on her I always loved that engine still do age of steam is taking good care on what she has moved to sugar creek yet that engine is my local engine and our city was and still is very proud of her
U should make a list of your top 5 steam locomotives u would like to see to be restored
I 2nd 😄
I would to see N.De.M No.3028 in steam again she has been in the U.S ever since she was withdrawn from service in the late 50s
I agree
I think Mr. history in the dark would like how they named those engines "Mexican Niagaras" some built by ALCO and by Baldwin
YES!!Like that Monstrous C&O 2-6-6-4! Imagine that under fire again.........
I recently learned about lateral motion devices and they sounded like pure magic at first. Fascinating to learn about though. Somebody should do a technical explanation video!
Would love to see a list of the locomotives that you want to see restored to an operating condition
Good point!
This just goes to show that some bigger engines like larger 2-10-0 decapoeds, 2-8-4 bershires, 2-10-4 texas and the only 4-12-2 along the prr's only successful duplex are just as strong as articulateds
Not really. Articulateds are stronger.
What about the S1
@@gamerfan8445true but some engines like the santa fe 5000 ie madem queen and the prr q2s show that they are just as strong as articulateds
Tractive effort and horsepower are strikingly different concepts.
@@rainierbagatsing1073 yeah madden queen is powerful but what kills her is speed. The Q2 on the other hand is very powerful, it on pair with the heavy challenger’s. But what I heard that they are thirsty locomotives, and they are hanger queens. They good, but they have things that hold them back from articulated design.
(This is gonna make me look like a complete foamer but here we go lol) Fun fact: there was actually a variant of the 9000’s that could produce ~111,000 lbs of tractive effort. These were the OWR&N (a subsidiary of UP) 9700 class. They were equipped with Franklin tender boosters due to the steep grades on the line. The boosters gave the 4-12-2s ~15,000 lbs more tractive effort while starting, then we’re disengaged at around 15 MPH. (Also, slight correction regarding 9000 herself, she was delivered with her 4th set of drivers blind, but UP added a flange to it after curve tests proved it unnecessary.) Love the vid, and as a volunteer of the museum where 9000 is(RailGiants), am I glad that you covered the 9000s (excluding the 9018 vid lol)!
I too wondered about the Navigator.
The strongest German steam engine ever built is the Br 45 with 28 built and around 420 kn of tractive effort. The usual German engines like Br 50's or 52's go with about half of that. This just goes to show the ridiculous size and power needed in Amercan freight service even back in the day. I just love these big loco's.
The I1-S is my favorite locomotive. My dad was a talented modeler and in 1984 he scratch-built for me a brass HO scale I1-S with a long haul tender, numbered 4587. It is my most prized material possession.
If I somehow managed to get rich I would buy and restore the Boston and Maine Flying Yankee. Since I'm retired and living in Central America I doubt that will happen, but I'm willing to take donations.
You and I have more in common than i thought, Mr. Darkness! I have always wanted to see a juggernaut of railroading be restored as well. There's this Canadian Pacific Railways 4-8-4 (one of only TWO 4-8-4S EVER MADE FOR CPR, btw) rusting away on its own on the grounds of a steel plant in my hometown of Regina, Saskatchewan. I have been wanting to see it and the dining car and caboose it "pulls" restored back to presentable condition, but it's owned by the steel plant, and they're NOTORIOUSLY difficult to contact. If i could just win a lottery, I could donate it to my new home pof Yorkton, Saskatchewan's Flour Mill Museum, who's looking for a piece of rolling stock to partner with their new museum building. If I won a big lottery, Madame Queen would be my #2 pick!
who knows maybe CP will consider it as part of their steam program if the trips with 2816 are successful
3101 is NOT owned by the steel company. It was purchase by Gary Southgate who plans in moving it for a museum.
@@backonpro5679 really? i asked just last year the local Western Development Museum about them taking it themselves through a Heritage Canada grant, and they said it was owned by EVRAZ and I would have to speak with them... when did this purchase you mentioned happen?
@@haydendegrow945 I think around a decade ago. Gary is making progress on a tourist railroad in southern Saskatchewan recently. He has some Cn f units working there.
@@backonpro5679 is he going to restore 3101 to run there?
Love your content Dark, quality as always 😊
This is an amazing video, I love it, it’s beautiful!
Madame Queen sits in my hometown! Awesome to see her getting attention! Seeing her there behind the civic center is and was a big reason why I like locomotives as a kid and later even as an adult.
The roast was well deserved btw. The city council is COWARDS!
#FireUpMadameQueen
#FireUpATSF5000
I'm pretty convinced that Darkness will be able to Pulli that off one day. If He gets the necassary Support, it should be doable.
I recently watched the video of the move of Madame Queen no.5000, but I can't understand the city council of Alamo not wanting to have any preservationist touching this locomotive.
It would be so great to see this Lady (more a Big Bertha) back in steam or at least under cover.
Amarillo, not Alamo.
The city wanted more money than preservationists were willing to provide. Like a lot more money. They saw it as a way to make back some cash spent on the stupid parking garage and still empty store fronts they built 5 years ago
I love your vidoes man!!!
UP 9000 is really good also third cylinder plus UP number #9000 is still around
88 of them are built and used perfectly
The pennsy managed the in and out services where my grandpa grew up. He said he could he the Decapods "banshee" whistles scream across town at any given time of day (really high pitched and really loud). I also only live 5 minutes away from the only surviving decapod.
I love your videos keep up the great work Darkness my life would be a lot more boring without you thank you for showing me all these trippy things about history keep up the great work my railfan friend
Thanks mate, cheers.
There was one CB&Q M-4a 2-10-4 that was used in excursion service for a short time, which was their amazing Chicago, Burlington & Quincy 6315 (Built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1927). To be honest it could’ve been displayed at the Galveston Railroad Museum in Galveston, Texas.
10:54 the most beautiful part of the video, it’s just beautiful, it’s amazing!!!
Ngl Darkness I was initially disappointed but not surprised at all by the amount of UNSPEAKABLE POWER of non-articulated steam locos in America, but also hearing about locos like madame Queen makes me suggest a couple future lists:
1. Top 5 Largest non-articulated steam locomotives (not in America)
2. A top 5 largest Narrow gauge steam locomotives, cos I think that would be interesting and
3. A list of locomotives you want to see be restored to working order. I know what locos I want to see run again *cough cough* MRWA B6 and WAGR DD592 *cough cough*
I really enjoyed this video and I think you should definitely do a video about the climax at Roaring Camp Railroads and it’s sad history
Santa fe 5000 aka madem queen is not only the most powerful non-articulated engine ever made but also probably the most powerful 2-10-4 texas ever in the world
Alright. I can't do it. I love your videos and your at time quirky presentations
Holy shit, i had no idea that the DRG Class 45 is nearly as powerful as the Union Pacific 9000 Class, while the Class 45 weights 40% less.
@@schmierlapp353 Whatever 'p' is
Powerful, UNSPEAKBLY POWERFUL!
Maybe could do a top 5 Non American Nonarticulated locomotives
I 2nd this.
He probably will
Nice! 🙂
You could do power ratio by clearance gauge and average weight of vehicles in various railway systems ;-)
Idea: Top 5 trains with the coolest sounding names. (Regardless if they succeeded or not)
I didn’t really expect the big boy to be on here
I may need to steal your video to aid in getting Amarillo to give the Madame Queen a bit more love.
Holcroft designed the 2-1 linkage. Gresley just used it
I believe in you Darkness. With your insane expertise you'll be able to get Madam Queen back up to steam a few more deckades down the road. Good luck!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊
I had never heard of Madam Queen before.
Back to the steam 🚂 power
I am very sad that my favorite type did not end up on this list. It was also a 3 cylinder loco.
What locomotive would it have been?
We need Madame Queen to meet up with Duke of Gloucester. I would travel around the globe to see that.
Can't get over that Madame Queen a 2-10-4 is more powerful that a 9000 a 4-12-2.
The significantly greater boiler pressure is the key component in the difference.
PEOPLE PEOPLE did you not see a few more steam engines got away from the CHAINSAW! And well Barry is still wondering what a steam engine is. Take that Pearlman😂
That's right, pal. Show your emotions and interest. We hear you and it's great that #1 still exists as well as some others. I'd like to visit the great Madame and all her glory some day and it might be soon seeing as how I'm in El Paso, TX.
Now I'm curious if Darkness ever heard of the Soviet Union's Yellowstone locomotives. Yes, the Soviet Union had Yellowstone locomotives. In fact they would be the only articulated engines they would build.
Are you talking about the P38 class?
The "USA USA" noise was unnecessarily noisy.
Natural that the Union Pacific would still get an entry on the list, addicted to superpower as they were. I also figured on at least one duplex showing up - I knew from past Wikipedia binging that some of them were powerhouses.
You should do a video talking about the 2-10-4 wheel arrangement
I'm actually not that surprised that America has the most powerful rigid framed kettles, because who else has not only the wide open spaces to allow for more gradual curves, but the sheer amount of stuff needing moved that would justify building and operating such a large locomotive? It's _horses for courses_ writ large.
Great respect though, because those are some hella strong draught horses you got there.
The fact that madame queen hasn't been restored yet its extremely infuriating
I wish I could travel back n time& PLEAD with all the people in charge of those long gone SCRAPPED Locomotives &Tell them"You are about to make a HUGE MISTAKE." All the powerful beautiful engines we will NEVER SEE,GONE.It matters to us Steam lovers all across this country....My Father passed away last year& He got to see many engines growing up and his favorite railroad was C&O RR.I wish they would have restored a Allegheny type 2-6-6-4 before he passed away.So many awesome engines are gone, you couldn't imagine all railfans excitement seeing them all again running down the tracks......This channel is absolutely amazing&Fun,especially his humor!🤣😆👍👍Alot of fun facts to learn about also.Live long &Prosper my friend& To ALL railfans all around the world........
I went to suger creek and they sayed they were being the biggest steam engine. They’ll probably ever have I guess this is the one they were talking about.
And I'd like to have built a L&Y Class 8. But with long lap, long travel valves, a 250psi boiler and Kylchap double blast pipe and double chimney. But I'd need to win, ooh, roughly 33 million for that.... where could I get my hands on 33 million?
What about some of the smallest steam locomotives; especially in regards to weight? Specifically, the ones designed either for passenger service or heavy industrial usage that doesn't involve shunting or dedicated equipment style locomotives.
Ones that come to mind first are the Sans Pareil replica (not the orignal) and Fairy Queen EIR-21. Heck, narrow gauge railroads had some of the smallest steam locomotives. Examples to start with would be Sea Lion, Polar Bear, Baldwin Class 10-12-D, Bridgton & Saco River No. 7, Dolgoch, Talyllyn, Latvia MI-657, Prince (Ffestiniog Railway), and especially DHR B Class 0-4-0ST.
Two things. One, I'd love to know the name of the music used during the Madame Queen segment. Second, that comment about city councils had me wheezing from my laughter.
Twilight of the Gods from Shadows of Valentia. It's actually a remix of Gaiden's final level theme. The Gaiden version of the song was already very good, but Shadows of Valentia's remix is sooo good.
@@tidepoolclipper8657 Thank you very much.
l1sa Texas class is true perfection
5000 is actually being restored VERY slowly. She's also not exactly very fast either, I believe her top speed was 55 miles an hour.
#5000 had 70" drivers vs the later 5001 & 5011 class which featured 74" drivers for improved counterbalancing. They were good substitute fast passenger power when a 4-8-4 wasn't available. Got to climb around #5000 once when the Panhandle Historical Society was doing some cosmetic work.
I'm surprised the C&O and Pennsy 2-10-4's weren't mentioned as they were close in size to the ATSF engines plus they had boosters.
@@stanfischer6175 I looked it up, they weren't as powerful in terms of tractive force ironically neither were the 5001-5011 class engines. A 5011 class would be better for restoration in terms of speed and ease of maintenance due to roller bearings, but where on earth could you run a Texas type that's as big as a UP challenger?
Hey darkness you could do a list of locomotives that is the most power from each country my guess for my home country NZ would be the Kb class locomotives
"G" Class.
For the sake of comparison of just how powerful these behemoths are: Big Bertha, the Midland Railway's superheavy banking engine and the most powerful non-articulated steam engine ever used in Britain, has less than half of the tractive effort of the UP 9000 series.
1:58 That killed me 😂🤣
having the Pennsy show up more is better than British Rail
Does this mean that the Pensy will be the new British Rail? More on it at 10.
Edit: I hope your dream comes true some day! Madam Queen is an awesome locomotive, and I hope it gets restored someday! Maybe, you will restore her!
Could you do top 5 most maneuverable planes ever based on minimum turn radius?
Starting examples would be the P-51 Mustang, F-86 Sabre, Mig-19, F-5, F-15, F-16, F-22, Mig-29A, Su-35, and Su-57.
@@tidepoolclipper8657 why no Mitsubishi zero?
I have another most powerful sub list you can start on. Most powerful light rail/branch line steam train . I would love to see what other engines you can find to go against the contender I have in mind for this most powerful
list. I have official shop paperwork and photos. Let me know if your interested.
I'm kind of surprised the Virginian didn't have any of their Locomotives on the list.
How about the top (bottom?) 5 smallest steam locomotives? By weight, and actually operated by a real railroad for revenue service, so no captive yard switchers, nor any amusement park trains, nor self-powered steam cranes or other MOW equipment.
I'd imagine that narrow gauge railroads had some of the smallest steam locomotives in existence. There's stuff like Polar Bear, Sea Lion, Dolgoch, Talyllyn, Latvia MI-657, Prince (Ffestiniog Railway), Baldwin Class 10-12-D, Bridgton & Saco River No.7, and DHR B Class 0-4-0ST.
Outside of that; the replica of Sans Pareil is even smaller than the real deal. Fairy Queen EIR-21 is also not that impressive in size, but is the oldest steam locomotive still in regular service.
8:08 oh my gosh i live near 4483! The historical society is having a difficult time acquiring her due to butting heads with the owner (he keeps asking for more money) take it from an eye on the ground she's doing a disent bit well lots of cracks in the fire box and a part of her driver's is hanging lose, but at least she is still here, whale i would love to get her in the museum a part of me wants to restore her to running operation and find a place any place for her that she can ride with out hurting any track, if your looking for a beginning welder for your shop count me in! One day the queen will ride again maybe just maybe with how strong she is prohaps she can out pull a modern diesel with modern freight, dream of that as you will hope i made your day with that image 😄
5:20 That’s not entirely true, the PRR’s S1 was larger in terms of length, but not in height or width. The S1 came at a length of 140 ft 2.5 in, while the Q2 only came out at 124 ft 7.125 in. In height, the Q2 16 ft 5.5 in, while S1 was 16 ft tall. Finally at width, the Q2 was 11ft 4in wide, while the S1 was 10 ft 7 in wide. So the Q2 wasn’t larger overall, it was larger in width and height, but not length.
So ..... your saying......all these engines...are ...
EVERYBODY...SAY IT WITH ME....
OVER 9000!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wonder how close the L&N m1 class came
Oh hail yeah
What about the 57 class? Does that come close?
So... how many lists on this series until British rail pops up ? 😂
don t know why they didn t put booster motors on all trailing truck locos . the Q 2 WOULD get my vote it still had more than the SANTA FE GOOD VIDEO
Do the SSW (Cotton Belt) 819
what is the name of chorus of the class 5000?
Twilight of the Gods from Shadows of Valentia. A terrific remix of an already very good final level theme from Gaiden.

History in the dark I'm building a Lego custom steam locomotive based on the union pacific 9000 my Lego costume steam locomotive wheel arrangement is going to be a 4-12-4 steam locomotive
The 9000 beats the Deutsche Reichsbahn Class 45 by just 9 kN, but she beats them.
What is a kilo Newton?
We need 5000 in steam, possibly it can operate in North Texas
It seems like the Pensy is the BR of the USA
I suspect that part of the problem with many of the articulated engines on the previous list was that they had nowhere near the boiler capacity to generate much power. All of those engines produced huge amounts of tractive force, but even huge tractive forces are not very powerful at low speeds. Three hundred kilonewtons of tractive force at one meter per second is only 400 horsepower. As the locomotives sped up, there was not enough steam generated to maintain a high tractive effort. You do not give the speed at which
I can understand why people might want a list of engines that produced high tractive efforts and high power, but that might require information that is not published. You would need a graph of maximum tractive effort versus speed, use that graph to calculate maximum power versus speed, and then rank the locomotives by which had the highest peak power.
In each instance the Rated Tractive Effort has been used. Therefore there is no need to quote speed as at start up is assumed.
I am not surprised there is no European locomotive, as the max axl load of 20 t limited the size of the steam locomotives. I would bet all of the locos mentioned in the video have an axl load around 30t.
Are garrats considered articulates?
sometimes Darkness scares me
Curse me, Darkness!
8:43 class m4a1
WITNESS HER!
The resin the 9000s are so low is they were made for horsepower not tractive effort
Anyone up for a flash mob at the city council meeting?
You should do most powerful British steamers that aren’t Garretts lol
Big Bertha, 9f, not sure after that
@@lonewolf4215 neither big bertha nor the 9fs would be in the uk top five most powerful
duchesses,princesses,a2,kings,br 8p ie duke of gloucester,p2 are all more powerful in horsepower or tractive effort and in the case of duchesses, princesses, the duke and probably the other three as well are more powerful than a 9f/big bertha in both tractive effort and horsepower...
that nine 'f' is a different scale to the p scale. its relative to 1-8 f and does match up with the ratings of 1-8p.
@@andrewyoung749 thank you for pointing out my mistake and rather than adding to what I said shitting all over my comment

I'm just gonna call 4483 "Ilsa".
sadly just 14 2-10-4s remain around the world including a tank engine
id probably do something aweful here but i have to admit "Madam Queen" is beautiful so if i could get the money to buy her i would but heres the aweful bit! id change her paint scheme to be fit that of a queen whilst asking that it doesnt make the locomotive look outlandishly stupid, that it contains her company logo on her tender, that she be given a name plate "Madam Queen" and finally be made steam capable so everyone can see that the one true royal of America is still alive and well!
and FYI im a brit we love our dinky choo choo's but there is something majestic about the American breeds
How's that apparently
