    A LITTLE ABOUT ME: I'm Dean Wolfe, a mostly self-taught Canadian guitarist/composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer/producer/performer. I started out as a full time musician on the road at age 17 for two years, but went part-time ever since while holding day careers including as a chef and in spiritual health care while raising a family.
    I've recorded hundreds of my own songs- many being used in media and award winning documentaries etc. I've been in several bands including a prog/jazz fusion act nFuze, performing in International Jazz festivals and jazz clubs. I abandoned the prog genre more or less back in the 1990s but have returned to it now with vigour a full 30 years later- so much prog I've ignored and quite frankly didn't have any idea about. My own prog band was rejected by record labels as "too progressive' in the late 80s, so i detoured into grunge, pop and alternative instead (then folk and acoustic fingerstyle guitar and ambient electric as well).

    I've been listening to Opeth for exactly 20 years and it still impress me. Even tough I know what's coming next in the song, I still feel "WOW this part". This is the first album without the latin grooves of Lopez, but I love this drummer too. Check your favorite Opeth songs live, you'll be amazed.

    This was the last recorded album song Mikael ever growled on. Btw. I (we) hope you're getting to the full album reaction of Opeth's "In Cauda Venenum" album at some point. Perhaps you forgot? ;)

      sure, how does it compare to this one?

    • @scyphe
      @scyphe 2 роки тому +8

      @@deanwolfechannel it's a different beast altogether. Watershed was the last hurrah of their heavy era before they switched to prog rock and it's difficult to compare them but I love Watershed as well as In Cauda Venenum. "In Cauda Venenum" is imho their best post-heavy prog effort to date.
      It's quite different from their previous prog rock albums being more experimental, grander and Mikaels writing is inspired by genres not included before (like jazz and dramatic stuff as well as an album intro that is very Pink Floyd'ish) and the album spans a wide spectrum of songs that are quite different from each other while still sounding like Opeth.
      The album is slightly denser and more complex and perhaps slightly more difficult for non-prog listeners to get into. You've already reacted to "Next of Kin" from that album so you could skip that when/if you start and just put it in the right spot in the playlist. :)
      /Cheers,
      Daniel

      @@colinclark1981 Yeah, people never mention that one for some reason. I see this kind of comment, about Hessian Peel being the last time Mikael ever growled, all the time for some reason here on UA-cam. It has me a bit confused... People seem to just forget the rest of the album, past Hex Omega. Which is a shame, cause I personally think Derelict Herds, Bridge of Sighs and Den Standiga Resan are all wonderful tracks in their own right

    I should mention that Watershed was the first album featuring the new drummer Martin "Axe" Axenrot as well as their new lead guitarist Fredrik Åkesson who is on a whole different level as a lead guitarist which is apparent in several of the songs on Watershed as well as the 4 albums after that. In Cauda Venenum probably features their best guitar solo ever which is held back and very melodic, like a more technical David Gilmore. :)

      Axe is a great great drummer.. Gotten better as they've progressed into prog Opeth.. Its not rock, it's not metal, it's prog Opeth.. Any way, so Axe is great.. But i still think Lopez had more soul in his drumming..

      @@hipgnosys I can't pick one over the other. Martin Lopez is an amazing drummer with skills and feel most drummers can only dream about.
      Martin "Axe" is also an amazing drummer with a somewhat different style; more intricacies going on in his playing that fits perfectly well with the direction Opeth took after Watershed (which was literally a watershed moment for the band). Lopez had a different "groove" for lack of a better word. It was really sad that he had to quit the Ghost Reveries tour due to mental health issues (severe anxiety etc.) and having to leave the band. In the end things worked out. Opeth's got a great replacement and Lopez started his own progressive rock/metal band where he could decide the working tempo and acceptable pressure from touring as well as having a lot more time with his family at home.
      The second guitarist Peter Lindgren left for similar reasons. His contributions were great, helping to create the atmospheric, full and layered guitars on the Blackwater Park that is a trademark for that album (and one reason I love it so much). As a guitarist there are certain parts where Peter and Mikael play overlapping distorted chords with some jazz structure that I just can't figure out since they blend their guitars so well.
      Fredrik as lead guitarist opened up new possibilities since he's a completely different kind of guitar player compared to Mikael and Peter. Mikael used to play most of the solos up until Watershed and his soloing style was melodic and specifically written for a purpose. He was never a shredder. When Fredrik had joined and there was some interview during the recording sessions for a post-Watershed album he simply said that he was "just" a rhythm guitarist, leaving all the technical stuff he couldn't do to Fredrik.
