Bill Dundee vs Tommy Rich - Jerry Lawler Commentary (8-23-80) Memphis Wrestling

Jerry Lawler is Lance Russell's guest commentator today as a sparkling and almost angelic Tommy Rich returns to the CWA and is welcomed back by the crowd with the usual fanfare. But trouble is brewing and Memphis fans are unaware that Tommy has changed a bit since they last saw him--he's grown up now, a man, hardened by the road--and, with Lawler in a cast having broken his leg playing football, Tommy's experienced eye can spot an opportunity here in the CWA. But first, before he can think about mining the gold, he has to beat another fan favorite, Bill Dundee, who is a notoriously vexxing opponent.
The end of the match is controversial. Tommy whips Dundee into the ropes and goes for a back drop but apparently inadvertantly spears Dundee's groin in the process. Although Dundee is doubled up in pain and clearly the victim of a low blow, Jerry Calhoun will inexplicably allow Tommy to easily cradle and pin the Superstar. The act itself appears very opportunistic and Lawler can't believe Calhoun is allowing it!

Lawler's occasional commentary in the Memphis years was always good. Obviously, he's better known for ring action and promos in that part of his career, but he was fun to listen to when he called a match. He was one of those guys who really sold it like it was a legit sport. Good chemistry with Russell, too ("Modesty is not becoming, Jerry").

If there is such a thing as a 1980 spotfest, this is it. I mean that in a very good way. Holy shit, did they cut a tremendous pace and they kept it entertaining with no control segments. That's tough. Great finish and post-match. Any recommendations for good Tommy Rich matches in Memphis and outside of Memphis.
