My Hyundai i20 N-Line (N8 DCT) Driving Review - Part 3

  • Final Part of the driving review of the #Hyundai #i20NLine and I am still left speechless as to how good this car handles stock!
That front end feel, precision and response is an accomplishment for ‪@hyundaiindia‬ which is infamous for lifeless handling cars. This car has broken that mould completely and for the good.
Would I want more power in it? Sure!
Would I want a faster shifting DCT? Absolutely!
But as it is, as a package, this car is absolutely the pinnacle of a slow but 'incredibly fun to drive fast' hatchback that is available in India today! Yes the VW Polo 1.0TSI may be a bit faster, but its no where as much fun to drive as this car. It also goes to show that Hyundai is following the Mazda Miata recipe and not the VW GTI one.

The reason hyundai didn't bought full blood N to india because hyundai understands indian market very very well that is why hyundai is the 2nd largest car seller in india
Because in indian peoples have knowledge next to 0 when it comes to car buying they just want to go with the flow
All they want is mileage space
There very very less actual car enthusiasts there are full of keepers and garage maintenance buyers
So overall full N doesn't makes really sense in india unless and untill its CBU and limited numbers

I am an ex TBHP member, their rabid hate for Hyundai and extreme bashing of the N Line nauseated me, few even brutally mocked me for even daring to compare the Hyundai to the Polo, which I think is an overrated, boring car with zero steering feel. Thank you for being a voice of sanity in a sea of VW fanboys and PR forums. BTW, I can assure you the I20 N has better steering feel than today's BMW 3 or 5 Series, personal experience, this car's steering reminds me closest of today's Maserati Ghibli steering.

Not a fanboy, but. Three things that made me buy a polo highline MT over n line last month.
    1) Manual. Having 3 automatic cars back home, this was a dealbreaker. And iMT is shit, period.
    Below 2 are nitpicks
    2) Gncap. I20 is definitely a better car to drive, but there’s no trust with the Korean regarding the safety despite having 6 airbags. Vw> i20.
    3) Aftermarket support. Had no idea regarding the kind of support but introduced by a friend after purchase. Already installed HIDs, euro intake, 8k ops, underbody covering and other cosmetic items. The amount of experience and confidence a third party service centre has working on a vw is unparalleled. oh the VCDS tweaks, hell yeah.
And it’s a personal car used by me alone
So Idc about the rear seats comfort. But I can see why people are out off by that. And the coverage on teamBHP is huge, so much as that you can basically never take it to service centre and still maintain your car clean.
    Every other way, i20 wins.

Hi Prithwi. I have watched all your driving videos of i20 and now I think it would have been better if I spent 60 k more and travelled 350 kms to get the N line. I got my i20 Asta O DCT in the same week N line was launched. I have switched to this from Figo diesel and I can say the stock i20 suspension is slightly softer than Figo. I’m sure the N line will be better than Figo. The i20 is 90% there in terms of handling, the chassis is slightly better than Figo and the top end is better than Figo as it’s a petrol. I felt the car’s performance to be better on XP95 and the car is really efficient when driven sanely on highways. It’s a great car in its price range, but Indians aren’t willing to pay that sum for a hatchback.

Hi @Prithwi Ray - Feel good and confidence boost up reviews from u. Feels so real and happy to see the truthful stuffs still. I cant say or praise much about you as so many people have done done it already and I second them totally ❤💯👌👍👏
As I've cornered this car and planning to buy soon, I had few things which requires your as usual prompt responses:
    1. When we should enable and disable traction control and/or ESC? Like in Bangalore high, semi-high traffics, highway, up hill or down-hill, rainy roads or skiddy roads etc etc.
    2. Will turningg on traction control and/or ESC effect in any ways if I just keep it as it is in ON mode? Like mileage, steering grip, performance/speed or brakes.
    3. As am not a perfect driver, I always get scary when it comes to up-hill driving. And when it comes to hair-pin uphill bends, am done. Hence, request your advice how to drive this car in these kind of situations for a driver like me. THis will be a life saver for me and sheer enjoyment for my wife 🙂
    4. Best way to secure underbody - any best pointers in bangalore?
    5. I see you have changed the tires for your car? Can i go for Yokohama 195-55-R16?
    6. Any must of accessories to the car as per your thoughts?
    7. I saw that you removed the cover and other thing which was on top of engine and inside the engile from 1:20 min in Engine, Underbody, Exhaust and Drivetrain inspection video. Is it ok we also remove it or keep it as it is?

    • @PrithwiRay
      @PrithwiRay  2 роки тому +2

      1. Traction Control/ESP should be left on during rains and slippery surfaces.
      2. TC/ESP does intervene during any uneven road surface, so its working behind the scenes even if you dont feel it. It does this by cutting throttle response and braking individual wheels when it detects any slip. This does hinder acceleration and heat up ur brakes over time.
      3. Uphill, leave TC on.
      4. Underbody cladding from the Creta/Seltos should bolt right up. I am yet to try this.
      5. Yoko S drives are hard sidewall tires, go for them if ur goal is to improve handling. For mix of handling and comfort I switched to Primacy 4.
      6. No accessories needed, the car is well loaded.
      7. Engine covers with foam/sound insulators just traps heat. I removed the foam from the cover and put it back on.

Hi Prithwi, you’d said in one your videos that you’ll do the data logging on this car. Well, I just test drove the dct, there’s a pronounced lag in both the drive modes. Of course the lag is less in S mode, but it’s not completely invisible. This car needs at least 95 octane to extract some performance outta it. Midrange is solid though, even on regular gas. Top end not tested, but for a small motor, not expecting much. Seems to be more of a mileage machine.

IIRC Hyundai's N division is supervised by the same person who was the head of BMW M division. Naturally the N line would also have a good handling character - it has upgraded suspension, steering, brakes and exhaust. The Polo GT is just the normal Polo with a spoiler and an auto 'box, which is why I think it's quite overrated - especially when it's not even been updated since 11 years. The only thing I hate about the N line is that they didn't even consider a manual option for it, but decided to give it an iMT instead. I don't really mind a TC but a DCT's long term reliability seems a bit sketchy. Plus, no rev matched downshifts in an automatic, so that kinda sucks.

@@thurules when you downshift the engine is spinning slower than the gearbox so you have to match the revs by blipping the throttle (in a manual). It can be done automatically in a dct I think.
