Should You Buy Hyundai i20 N Line?

  • The Hyundai i20 has always pushed the limits of what a hatchback could or should do... at prices that would make sedans blush now and then. The third generation i20 is, er, even more pricey! But the i20 N Line? Kartikeya says the car is a lot of bang for the buck, visually, and it's a reasonably fun car to drive as well as a practical car. That's a hard balance to manage, right?

    I purchased N line 2 months ago and this is my review. The mileage in bumber to bumber traffic is ridiculously low. I drive it to the office everyday and end up with 9 kmpl on the display in Noida traffic. But do I regret buying it. Not even for a minute. Every weekend I take it out on the expressway or the twistys in Rajasthan. Oh my god, the sports mode with the steering feedback, the handling, the paddle shifters and the punch just puts a quirky smile on my face every time I floor the pedal. The only drawbacks are the mileage part I told before and overheating of dct in bumber2bumber traffic which can be easily avoided if you just shift to N as soon as you come to a halt and shift it back to D.

    I'm an owner of the New i20 CRDi, and when the N Line variant was introduced, I was really impressed by the stylish body kit and the revamped steering wheel. Over the course of several months, I gradually upgraded each component to the N Line version. It all began with the sleek spoiler with wings addition, followed by the replacement of the rear lower bumper with faux exhaust tips. After that, I swapped out the front bumper with Nline grill, and just recently, I upgraded to the N Line steering wheel - a fantastic addition. To complete the transformation, I even added the sporty 6-speed gear knob from the N Line IMT variant (the same used in the N cars outside). I haven't delved much into altering the steering feel since the diesel variant already boasts a somewhat stiffer damping.
    So essentially, I've turned my i20 CRDi into an almost identical match of the i20 Diesel N Line variant, with all the transformations being faithfully OEM. Loving every bit of the transformation! As you guys mentioned in your podcast, after every change, I was getting that new car feeling all over again.

In Bangalore traffic if you the car then 12-13 Kmpl, if you it smoothly it has given me a mileage of 14 - 15 kmpl. when i checked the mileage by filling up the tank for a month, it gave me 13 kmpl. In the Mysore Expressway if you maintain 80 Km/Hr you will get 22 - 23 Kmpl. But on average if you love cruising over 100 Km/Hr you will get around 17 Kmpl.

    I was looking for a premium hatch for my father. It was the steering which made me refuse Baleno and altroz and select i20N line. People don't realise this but that car is way ahead in handling when compared to Verna and equally spacious bar the boot. For the length, looks and the boot, we have to pay quite a hefty price. So i20 N line ticks all the right boxes.

    I have owned a Titan Grey N8 DCT since May and driven it for 1500 kms. It's actually the first car I bought with my own money having driven my dad's 2010 i10 previously. There's something about the suspension tuning and the feel of the steering wheel of the i20 N Line that just hits right on an empty road with winding corners. From all the cars I test drove before my purchase this one impressed me the most. The leap in tech compared to our i10 also makes me appreciate the package a lot more, though admittedly any modern car could have had this impression on me haha. The amount of fun that can be had in a city is quite limited for sure though like you said. The throttle response when it is not in Sport mode leaves a lot to be desired as well. I wish there could have been a 1.2L naturally aspirated engine that was as powerful.
    There are several aspects that make this not as much of a VFM proposition as a Baleno or Altroz though, chief among them being the price. So, I do understand why the price conscious Indian buyer would scoff at this. One shocking thing I found out only after taking delivery was that no variant of the i20 comes with a rear armrest anymore, instead they all have a middle headrest. Hyundai updated this silently on their website and I sadly never caught it, I only watched launch reviews and long-term ownership reviews. This detail is also how I can notice that the unit you have showcased in this video is an older model because it has the rear armrest. I also do not like how the Indian variant of the i20 has had several feature omissions as that which is sold in Europe for instance. The European i20 N Line has a mild hybrid powertrain with a 24 Volt battery, 60:40 split rear seats, ADAS level 2, a better instrument cluster like that on the Alcazar, UV cut glass, a rear parcel shelf that can slide away and down into grooved tracks and better quality non-glossy side skirts and styling elements. It's really a bummer how many useful and practical features have been cut.
    That said, even in hindsight there still isn't a car in this price range I would have rather bought. The Altroz Racer Edition which isn't out yet could have come close in theory, but those garish racing stripes on the hood didn't cut it for me compared to the sedate and classy looking stylish flair elements on the i20 N Line. It's a car that speaks to the enthusiast in me and yet doesn't feel out of place while driving to the office or driving my family around. Overall, I'm really quite pleased with my purchase and hope to make many happy memories with it over the years to come!

    Well i got the regular i20 2 months back. I somehow didn’t like the n line as it looked too clumsy and flashy. Being a polo owner, and having trading it for a ford figo (2016) i didn’t have much expectations from this hatch. However i was in for a surprise;
    Exterior
    1. The front looks so damn sporty and specially in white looks like a much expensive car.
    2. The side profile is amazing with stunning proportions and great stance.
    3. The rear is where it looks bad. The snake led taillamp and the chrome garnish with that raised diffuser looks bad and no matter what i still hate this portion.
    Interiors
    1. The all black interiors which looked cheap and hard on the test drive vehicle( badly maintained), looks damn sexy and sporty on my car.
    2. The infotainment is amazing with wireless apple carplay.
    3. The digital cluster has an amazing upmarket feel. And so does the auto headlight feature.
    4. The space and the fabric upholstery is so damn amazing.
    Drive :
    1. Its so silent, its awkward 😂
    2. It is not an enthusiast car, but can definitely be driven enthusiastically.
    3. Very smooth and feels planted.
    4. Feels pretty confident in corners (but definitely not polo level)
    Overall :
    Im loving it and for me, its the best hatch out there.

For the true enthusiast, a better option I felt was to get the prev gen City when it was available and blow the extra cash you save on fuel. It was a much better bargain. For now, the Slavia 1.0 manual makes a better case than the N line.. a more accomplished car sans the bells and whistles.

    Company certified it as 20 KM/L. But, I very much satisfied if it gives around 10-15 KM/L in the real world.

      IMT offers even lesser mileage than the DCT lol. Also if u like automatic cars, imt wouldnt be a wise choice. If mileage is a concern then stick to the ivt and not the n line. IVT comes with a 86 bhp motor vs N line with 118 bhp. The N line is a turbo charged engine and will give u single digit numbers in the city, depending on traffic. On the highway it will will give 16-22 kmpl.

    @motorinc Hey Buddy, I just came to know today that i20 N Line 6 Speed MT N6 (the non IMT version) has been launched recently. Earlier I was planning to go for i20 Asta Optional. So tell you the story behind why I am looking for a hatchback. I am a freelance photographer by profession and my major part of travelling either takes place in my Scorpio or Uber/Ola. Right now I have 2 cars. Scorpio and Maruti A Star. And A-Star is going to run out of its shell life this coming January. Also, it’s more preferred by my Mum because of the flexibility to easily get in and get out. So I have owned Maruti 800, then a Zen and then A Star. Another limitation to opt for a hatchback is the space my second parking slot has. It can easily accommodate cars size ranging from A Star to Say Baleno or an i20 or The Tata’s hatchback.
    Having said that, I wanted the second car to be at par with present times and yet efficient in few aspects. And somehow i20 Asta O was full filling nearly almost all the criterias. And then I came to know about he N Line options. Earlier I was keen on thinking about i20 N Line N8 IMT. And today I almost read all the messages and responses here from our like minded friends and I am totally confused now about the N8 IMT OR N6 DCT OR N8 DCT. This is when I came to know that N6 6 speed manual transmission.
    I would really appreciate if you could put some light on this particular model midst all the greater pros and cons of other N Line variants. 😊

    Great Review . It's gonna return terrible mileage in city like Bengaluru(7-8kmpl). Again most cities are not Bengaluru. In Bengaluru you are in heavy traffic as soon as you move out of the street you live in. In a flowing traffic I got about (11-12kmpl) .The only contradiction that I would make with this review is that DCT is easier to live with in Bengaluru than the 1ltr TSI/TC combo in VW cars. And that’s where it looses its handling capabilities and steering feedback for them. Coz to them the Hyundai steering is as dead as a video game joystick and that doesn’t inspire as much confidence going into corners or quick lane changes.

    Whever I see a performance badge slapped in a car in India weather it's N-line, Vrs, M sports or "sports" Varians of a normal car. General assumption is that, there will be more performance, that's what those badges mean. Or else release 24 variants like tata and name them after colours, at least you know you aren't getting something extra. I mean what's stopping them to release a verna N-line with red calipers and blue paint, all they need to do is tune the suspension setup and call it a day.
    One thing I would really appreciate in reviews is talking about the quality of the build, the structural integrity. We need safer cars than any where else I believe. Amount of close calls that happens on our roads is enough to retire a new driver. Almost no Journalists ever point out the built standard when reviewing the car. But they do when reviewing the competition or when the car isn't in the picture. It's common knowledge how the car is yet we never see those words spoken out. Idk if that upsets brands or something but If we will keep on criticising then they sure will be forced to meet the eropean standard. Definitely this car costs twice the more there but, as you mentioned they could've removed the sunroof, that could've resulted in better centre of gravity and also would've increased the strength of the roof. A car like polo with 200 bhp doesn't get sunroof in UK and I assume most enthusiast in India who like to drive cars won't care either but it does show they just want to sell to generally everyone like a "new top model."

    Got one at home since last Christmas and it's been okay so far! It's more like a 7/10s car, push it beyond that and it quickly feels out of depth. That D mode is plain stupid, I fear for the dual clutch when it lugs so much after shifting up so early. And sport mode is violent for daily traffic, but it's fun on open roads. The D mode should have been 'normal' than eco, which is what it feels like right now. And I wish the engine had more grunt in higher rpms, it just makes more noise and is harsh without much poke above the 4k and that takes away the charm. The seats are lousy, there is no proper bolstering or support and the quality of the material used is pitiful. Not too great for cornering! The sound insulation and build quality also leaves a lot to be desired.
    What do I like then? Brakes are wonderful and that steering wheel is great to hold & look at, but the feel itself is somewhat numb. The Fords have ruined me proper there. Love the paddles and that works well. It took a bit of time to get used to since the range of the engine is so narrow, but it's fine now. Suspension is good on well paved roads and that exhaust note is lovely, wish it was louder, but I am glad something is there at least. It sounds great on the inside on open roads and love the blips during shifts. And it looks great in person, and I dig hatchbacks over sedans or crossovers, so call me biased. I really love the true all black interior, especially that gorgeous roof on the inside.
    Wish Hyundai had done more on the mechanical side of things! Currently, it doesn't go as well as it looks. :) But full marks to them for trying at least, when Suzuki plays jokes on us here with the Swift Sport. I hope the next iteration of the i20 N Line will push these boundaries even further.

      Could you elaborate on 'That D mode is plain stupid, I fear for the dual clutch when it lugs so much after shifting up so early.' If sport mode is jerky for traffic and D mode lugs, then in which mode do you drive it in traffic?

    • @4g5y
      @4g5y 9 місяців тому +1

      @@thurules I use the paddle to hold onto a lower gear, either 1st or 2nd in D. the DCT also sticks to a gear when we change using the paddle shifts. Less so in D than S, but still useful. Else, shift to S Mode and let the DCT do it's thing, but it's very snappy and one needs to be very very careful in traffic. I wish the DCT was tuned a little better in D and not change up so early and also hold onto a lower gear more often.

      @@4g5y In that case do you think it would be better to go with the IMT for the i20 n line since it will let you to hold on to gears and unlike the sequential shifting paddle shifters in the dct, the conventional shifting imt would be better suited for our road conditions?

    • @4g5y
      @4g5y 9 місяців тому

      @@thurules No! I don't like iMT at all. It's neither here nor there. Without control over the clutch, the shifts are slow too, not at all recommended if one is keen to drive. DCT can be managed as paddles are present. Or just wait for the MT, the rumor is that it will be there for N Line facelift.

    Heyi Kartikeya sir, just a mention of paddles. I have done 10000 kms on my n8 dct and there is (a lil exaggeration coming up😅) a world of diiference in pedals' usage in sports mode and I am talking about rideablitity and maneuvers. The dct by itself shifts earlier in normal mode but if someone can get beter at using sports + pedal, the car lets you use its 'manual control' and it never then, feels like an automatic. Our of my 10k drive, I have done nearly 7k on pedals cummulatively and in streets too, meaning that I do drop to first gear althought below 1800 revs, (guessing) its eager to shift down. But any higher and it is a total manual. Correct me in case I am figuring this wrong. The turbo lag is for real, a pain,though.
    And , I pity anyone's blatant denial if they are not using car's capability to start using phone and control the climate of the cabin. Its the only thing which is more value for money.

      @@LAKSHAYSHARMAYOGDEEKSHA but paddle shifter gives a downshift only at certain speeds/rpm. This was mentioned in the nline review from overdrive. That means it still doesnt give you complete manual control. Moreover it automatically upshifts after a certain rpm even in manual mode.

    • @LAKSHAYSHARMAYOGDEEKSHA
      @LAKSHAYSHARMAYOGDEEKSHA 10 місяців тому +1

      @@thurules so yes, there is a range in which paddles give you complete control in sports mode. In normal drive, they're a gimmick. But the low end i.e say 2000 rpm below this is downshifts and higher end cross 5000 rpm where it upshifts. This range still ends up giving a lot of control. I took it to a 300 km drive last week. And I was doing 130 kmph in 5th gear witj 6th and 7th remaining, and was also doing 120 in 7th gear, all by paddles. On a race track, that might be of lesser use, but in practicality, I had to keep my hands on the steering all the times and I had complete control over downshifts and upshifts. In fact at time I felt I was torturing the engine keeping it at paddles.😅

      Hey YS! Thanks so much for bringing it up! Will keep it in mind. Didn’t mention it because most people would leave the automatic to do the work. My wife and I own an i20 CVT version (petrol). Initially we were confused about the N-line version. The 3-lakh OTR price difference was a major factor. The 83 vs 120 bhp power difference was another major factor. We were not really sure about the mileage of the turbo variant (but we knew that the 1.2l engine with CVT delivered just about 7-9 kmph). Finally we decided to go with the VFM factor. We decided that the 3l price difference is actually quite substantial. Also since my wife was a new driver and she would be primarily driving the i20, hence the 37bhp won't make any difference to our driving experience. The i20 has so far been a very comfortable experience. Haven't taken it on the highway yet.
    Recently we've been hearing of the turbo too having low mileage. So less VFM.
