Abuse Me sounded kinda gay, (before gay was accepted) especially to a young audience who mostly probably didn’t relate to it etc. Imagine if Nirvana had released the song Polly instead of Smells Like Teen Spirit from their second album Never mind. There’s no way they would have been as big.
tbh, i think Daniels music went far above so many peoples heads at the time of Freakshow especially. Freakshow was quite a experimental album with songs ranging from Slave/Freak to Cemetery/The Closing. I personally don't think sounds take shape of "gay" but even if that was the case, i feel like people couldve easily put their personal bias aside and give Abuse Me a try anyways. The boys were 16/17 at the time, so it was quite obviously a angsty expression.
Back then when someone said that sounds gay, it usually didn’t literally mean gay. I agree with what you said but their audience was mostly young so it goes without saying that some of silverchair’s music went over their heads, but it still sounded cool while Abuse me didn’t to most young people. In other words my point wasn’t about judging the members of the band, but more about the reality of what happened whether or not we like it or not or feel that it’s right or wrong.
