    The entire khatam-an-nabiyeen discussion is so important and crucial given that it is the cause of so much contraversy and debate throughout Islamic history, and has led to so many declarations of kufr over the centuries. We now know that the full intent of the concept was indeed to end any future prophethood for completely Abbasid political reasons, even though such a concept contradicted the previous belief (not contained in the Quran) held by the Anti-Trinitarian Christians (who later became Muslims) of Jesus' (a prophet) return and second coming (which was retained in the Islamic Hadith tradition). The very notion that 33:40 and "khatam an nabiyeen" is a later innovation and addition, written into the Sana'a manuscript with a different hand and trailing off into the margin, is so important, and renders the entire debate/contraversy and the blood spilled over it utterly inane and moot. As i've said before, thanks is not enough for your work and contributions.

    • @TAlexander
      @TAlexander  2 роки тому +8

      We will get to the issue of dating the manuscripts. I'm currently working on a short video on the science behind radio carbon dating. I have recently had to completely rethink my approach after having looked into dating methods. Turns out radio carbon dating may well be extremely unreliable when dealing with parchment. There is a high probability that parchment is "contaminated" with mineral carbon. Mineral carbon however does not contain any C14 as it is very old carbon. It only takes less than 2% of mineral carbon contamination to skew the dating of a manuscript 100 years into the past.

      @mysotiras 011 fine. What's the evidence of the Syriac Alexander Romance being written around 630 AD then? There is no surviving manuscript unlike the Quran and there is definitely no carbon dating performed. Yet Thomas is confident that the Syriac literature was produced around 630 when many scholars and historians opine that it was produced much later in the 10th century.

    Hey Thomas, FYI Daivd Powers has a new (2022) talk about this subject and there he stresses the obvious fact (ignored by Muslim commentators) that the verb (مَا كَانَ) in the ayah مَا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ أَبَا أَحَدٍ مِنْ رِجَالِكُمْ وَلَٰكِنْ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ وَخَاتَمَ النَّبِيِّينَ ۗ is in the past tense! So it could have not been written when Muhammad was still alive. You can find his talk on youtube.

    The corresponding word in Arabic for Hebrew Kallah is kannat
    J. Conrad, “כַּלָּה,” Theological Dictionary of the Old Testament (Grand Rapids, MI; Cambridge, U.K.: William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1995) 165.
    These are probably cognates and reflect what a teacher of mine called the rice-lice-nice syndrome in which when you go between Semitic languages you often get an exchange /r/ for /n/ for /l/. So, in this case the lamed /l/ in Hebrew and the other Semitic languages you cite became /n/ in Arabic, but they are originally (in Proto-Semitic) the same word.

    Fun fact. This so-called 'tampering' is more easily explained by the standard Islamic narrative. It is clearly stated by the Quran itself/Muhammad himself that surahs and verses can be changed and abrogated at will, and he frequently did this. The so-called Satanic verses are a major case in point. Another example is about the zakat and what it could be used for. After the Conquest of Mecca and the Battle of Hunayn, when Muhammad wanted to bribe his former enemies into becoming warriors of Islam, he inserted the line that zakat could also be used 'to win over hearts'. He then gave 100 camels each to Meccan leaders like Abu Sufyan, a fortune in those days. As soon as Muhammad fell in lust with Zaynab d Jahsh, who he himself had married to his beloved adopted son Zayd, of course he simply abrogated the previous verses and inserted these new rules about adoption and marriage to justify his marrying her himself. Even Aisha commented on how convenient his revelations seemed at times. 😁

    • @meusisto
      @meusisto 2 роки тому

      It also seems so to me. But how do muslims themselves see this freedom to abrogate? This makes Muhammad the Forger, the one that makes up verses when convenient.

      Fun fact: People who start out with the expression "fun fact" typically don't follow up with actual facts but with conjecture. In this case for example, abrogation cannot explain some of the evidence provided, e.g. the assertion that Muhammad married his daughter in law at the same time that he forbade it for others. If you work under the premise that the standard Islamic narrative is by and large trustworthy, then you have a contradiction here.
      Similarly, the gaps in Ibn Ishaq are difficult to explain given that premise. Muhammad could hardly abrogate verses more than a century after his supposed death.
