Honestly I have no idea what Lovotti was thinking there. They had an advantage due to offside and they were 5 meters off. They could have scored there and put them within one score of the Boks, and then who knows what could've happened then(unlikely, but, you never know). Indeed, blocking (obstructing) is illegal in rugby. It's not necessary for the person with the ball to be the furthest up the field - you simply cannot impede others from tackling the ball-carrier (not counting mauls, of course).

Remember this game. Only 17-3 half time, Italy had the chance to close the gap early second half to 17-6 or 17-10, then they needlessly get a red card from an absolutely ridiculous tackle. The SA player was literally vertical as he went down on his head. Could have been a much more interesting game without the red.
I do not have live coverage in Thailand of the match so I could only watch the extended highlights of 22 min. During those 22 min I saw the Springbok captain handle the the ball once and got tackled after 3 or 4 meters and once he was guilty of obstruction that cost SA a try. What is this player doing in the team? After the game during the press interview he got one question and looked pathetic.
Garry & Carlos I do not know what match you watched but No 6 was the one that caused the obstruction when Stef du Toit scored and in the 22 min I watched the captain made two tackles and he once handled the ball. I really do not know where these stats you mentioned came from.
Does anyone else think the obstruction call just before 14min was a bit tough? Not a terrible call. I've just seen much worse and deliberate obstructions not penalised.

What this sap (the unlucky one) did not think of was the consequences towards his action. And they are... A reverse penalty. A red card. A chance of winning the game. A suspension. And a chance of winning the World Cup (which was very slim).
