  • On a remote subtropical island, somewhere on earth, you'll find our off grid homestead. We live in an old stone house, with three children, and produce our own electricity, water, and vegetables. With Shetland Geese, Chickens, Guinea Fowl, and two cats to care for, we're slowly transforming 5 acres of wild land into edible gardens. We have 15+ years of experience living this way, so we know a thing or two about how to make off grid living work through our own failures.

I grew up with parents trying to grow our own food and learned how much work it takes; no more. My much younger siblings had a much different upbringing with soda! 😆 I wound up cooking whole foods plant based in my home; not many people I know do that. Thanks for showing fermented carrots, I will try it. I’ve only made canned pickles and quick refrigerated pickles. I make kimchi. Thanks for sharing your beautiful videos.

Gorgeous video! Love your honesty about what it actually means to be self-sufficient, so impressed by your garden, and will definitely make these recipes:) Enjoy the rain & that insane view. x

We moved to Pico 2 years ago and this is our 2nd summer trying to grow food organically. The rocky soil, and many times wind and rain can be hard on crops. We keep experimenting with ways to grow things and also learn lots from locals. Most use chemicals but many have lots of knowhow about growing in this climate. I wonder how much time you spend gardening. We find that it could absorb all our time. We are also still trying to figure out how much of each thing we want to plant. I also love kolhrabi amd it grows well here! Many people here are not familiar with kohlrabi and chard, two veges we love. Do you also have fruit trees? We visited Flores this past May and did not see many vege and fruit gardens as I see here on Pico. I would have loved to meet you and see your garden. You live on a beautiful island!

Hey, glad you found us from Pico. Oh I could live in my garden, but realistically with all the things i have to do I only spend 1 day in my garden a week. Maybe more in Spring, but we always have so much other stuff to do that Magnus cannot do alone. We have many fruit trees but keeping on top of the invasive species like Cana, Tobacco, and Acacia trees is such a lot of work. Our house and lands need so much work, and everything is by hand because getting a machine or people to help is impossible. It is such a hard climate to grow in - there is a reason why people on Flores always had a very difficult life - and many still do. And no, not many people grow their own food because that skill is getting lost between the generations and really people are just happy they finally have convenience food. Honestly, I just watch the weather, try to time planting + seeding right, and let go of the disasters. Nothing you can really do when a tropical storm rolls in. You should see my Wasabi that just got flattened by a flash flood!

Have you considered growing chicory for coffee substitute.
We strive daily for these things as well.

I'm not sure it would cope with our summer heat. I do hope to grow more coffee plants but it requires lots of helpers for harvest time, and we have too much other more important things to be doing 😊

How long does it take to get items from Amazon in Flores?

sometimes 2 weeks, sometimes 3 days, sometimes months 😮‍💨 and sending things back is not so easy. But, Amazon Spain is free shipping! whereas a lot of Portuguese companies charge an insane amount to deliver.
