I enjoyed all Steve McQueen’s performances...I think he’s a coolest actor I ever seen...he has many special characters...how natural!! Thanks for the video!!

McQueen was so unhappy about the chase scenes, and what he considered the poor riding ability of the ones doing the riding....he first filmed them, then donned a German suit, and refilmed them. So, in the final cut, he essentially became himself chasing his own self.
When I was in high school _The Great Escape_ was about 4 or 5 years old. One day in September of 1968 a certain high school senior viewed the movie on TV. I thought McQueen/Hilts were very cool. A Saturday a few days later I dressed myself in an inside-out, cutoff sweatshirt and white Levis, I borrowed my friend's Honda 160cc motorcycle and rode across town to my high school's football game, played at the opponent's school. Immediately after the game, trying to look at casual and as calm as I could, I rode up and down the school's street, helmetless of course, there for all to see. For about a half hour I was McQueen/Hilts, or so I imagined.
Steve McQuenn without any doubt the coolest cat in Hollywood ever!! Freeze the frame at 0:52/53, Steve looks in command of the scene and definitely badass even sporting a german soldier uniform. Unforgettable moment.
One of my all-time favorite movies. I have seen this movie hundreds and hundreds of times and it gets better each time. Long live The Cooler King. Hilts welcome home.
Triumph TR6 Trophy The motorcycles used during chase scene in film The Great Escape were 1961 Triumph TR6 Trophy models disguised as German BMW R75 motorcycles. The star of the movie, Steve McQueen, did much of the riding for the film himself, although Bud Ekins performed the famous jump scene as McQueen's stunt double.
@@petercousins1645 Nobody said he did ALL the stunts. But he did do some. He did actually ride the bike on the road and on some of the more difficult hilly terrain. A stunt professional did the more difficult stunts, but McQueen DID do some of the not-so-difficult ones.
The clip when McQueen stops to decide his next move he opens the gas tank and shakes the bike to see how much ⛽ fuel he had was not in the script, a move only a true biker would do.
My first little dirt bike I got when I was about 13. My Dad joked 'are you going to run across our pasture like Steve McQueen in 'The Great Escape'?" (I did start ramping terraces on it just like Steve.) I learned this move from McQueen-whenever stopped for whatever reason pop the cap and shake the bike to check gas. Thanks King of Cool!
Steve McQueen did a lot of the stunts in that scene. He wanted to do the jump over the boundary fence but the producer refused on the grounds that if he injured himself it would have delayed the release of the film. The jump was actually performed by stunt rider Bud Eakins & he did it on a British Triumph.
It'd been better if he'd stolen a Beemer from the Germans and jumped with that! But you can tell its a Triumph from the trail of oil its leaving behind.
As a British Triumph motorcycle collector, can you imagine finding this origional bike that Bud Eakins rode in this film all these years later?? Talk about exciting!! Then just think how much this bike woukd be worth fully documented and sitting in collection or some man cave... Ahh what a thought!!😃
Steve McQueen was a great actor for his time this reminds me about the great escape of defector in North Korea that made it to the other side of south Korea good one👍👍👍👍👍
Doesn't matter what year you are watching; If this particular movie doesn't belong to one of your top TEN, then you have no taste in movies; and I pity you!
This scene wouldn't be half as good without the music. There have been themes AS good as the one in The Great Escape, but the score overall has to be the best in film history.
The German soldier who put him back in his cell after recapture was seriously like: "Man, I'm sorry you got caught, I respect the hell out of you for that sick jump over the spiky fence of death, but you gotta go back in now. Best of luck next time."
so awesome, especially when you recall that McQueen actually played double roles: Hilts, and some of the Germans chasing Hilts. the German stunt riders couldn't keep up With McQueen, so Hilts threw on a German Uniform and Goggles and did some takes as a Pursuer, such as that little bit at 4:22 . the German on the single bike is actually McQueen.
Today some guy drove by on what was literally the loudest motorcycle i've ever heard, and my dad said he was going to string the wire across the road like Steve McQueen does.
I have the soundtrack on vinyl (record). I found it in a store in Rochester N.Y. ( House of Guitars). I,m playing it all the time when I,m working in my yard or cutting wood. Great soundtrack. Another great soundtrack album I have is the movie Patton. His speech too his troops in the beginning and his speech at the end when he says that all glory is fleeting.
The same director as the Magnificent Seven, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson and James Coburn, who were also in The Seven and the same composer Elmer Bernstein, so a bit of a reunion.

He said funny how life leads in certain ways, if it wasn't for the chance overhearing a conversation.
There is no such badass in American Cinema today. Dude was so badass that they couldn't find a stuntman to keep up with him in these scenes. So he wore a German Outfit and chased himself in several scenes.

I remember watching this as a young child, maybe 8yrs old, with my father. When he told me this was based on a true story I could hardly believe men that could pull something like this off could be real. I know now some scenes were added or exaggerated, but to think they actually got that many guys out of a tunnel... I would have been resigned to my fate of sitting out the war in a pow camp, but that wasn't an option for some men.

My favorite movie, especially this motorcycle scene,.... when I was a teen. Flash forward to year 2010, and I'm already 57 years old, and by then had driven my 1985 Honda 150cc Scooter for many years. Top speed 65, but I never drove it faster than 45 to 50 mph, daily, on average. It is not an "off the road" scooter,...but I happened to be in a city park , and it was summertime,...I'm driving very cautiously over the grassy areas, in an open field, mostly. I get it in my mind, on a whim, that I want to try to "jump" my scooter like, "Steve McQueen". Forgetting I survived a heart attack when I was 47, had my chest cut open, and received double bi-pass surgery,.....and by 2007, was already lame in one leg. But for some reason I was momentarily, (insane). I scouted out some low rise, short hills, that were no higher that 3 to 4 feet. I just seized the moment,.....and drove parallel to them for a bit, then picked a place that looked feasible, and headed towards them, while accelerating my speed. THEN BOOM! I hit the "sweet spot", and my scooter and I flew up in the air! For mere few seconds I was airborne. Next, I saw the ground below me, fall away. Seconds later, I landed on the top of the crest, and luckily never lost control. My scooter landed hard,....its tiny 8 inch diameter tires, and mushy springs, just barely absorbed the impact. No harm, no foul, I survived, & my scooter survived. I felt 30 years younger instantly! For the win!
