Yep, listening to it without headphones and I wouldn't have known that there was an audio issue if I hadn't scrolled through the comments. Btw, Thank you so much for your hard work Kennie. You're doing good 😊 -Love, your aneurotypical S.E.A. Biscuit.
Honestly I thought it was kinda fun. Like you were just having a little whisper in my left ear while dissing this movie. I'm just glad you kept the episode tbh!!! I always love your BM&AB content 😁
Stalker movies using actual mental illnesses, that don’t always correlate with stalking, as an explanation for said stalking is so extremely uncomfortable. Stop it, please and thank you
Yes, if he had somethings like erotomanic delusions, then this would be an explanation. These people do end up being medicated and seeing a therapist though, definitely not running in the wild with no supervision. He's only on the spectrum, there's no evidence of a psychosis spectrum disorder, or major delusional disorder... So they're essentially saying he's that way because he's autistic, and that's not true. Edit: Someone here who admitted to being on the spectrum put it nicely, they said they're likely to be preoccupied with characters and concepts, not real life people.
@@samf.s8786 exactly what I was thinking. Erotomania is a legitimate diagnosis that is literally about being obsessed with celebrities to an unhealthy level. Autism doesn’t make you think “oh f-ck I just killed a woman, but wait, now I can go inside my idols home!”
I truly think we could make stalker movies that don't need to use any mental illness to explain why they do it. A lot of these stories make it out that they NEED to have a reason, and really, since its fictional, I think we can leave it out altogether. They're creepy for the sake of being creepy. They stalk for the sake of stalking. We don't need to explain an underlying issue imo. And if we really have to, why not just make up a fake illness? Of course chances are they'll still end up making symptoms that will fall under a real illness. But we can try not to tie a specific group of people to it so we aren't creating stigmas
@@BlurryNova I think making up an illness is the best solution, and mostly because often (in theatre, at least) characters *need* to have a motive, otherwise the story won’t go forward. Making up an illness with some very exact symptoms is a much better “motive” or reason than a real, non-related mental illness that you just slapped on the character like a sticker and called it a day
As an autistic person I’m pretty sure most of us would rather be obsessed with animals or imaginary people (characters) and concepts, not actual people, especially considering how terribly we are treated and represented by neurotypical people.
Still some autistic ppl do develop obsessions or hyperfixations with real people, but I believe it's usually harmless because most are conscious of the fact that the other person doesn't know them and it's important be respectful of boundaries and privacy. I have a hyperfixation with a streamer that comes and goes where I pretty much watch nothing but his content , and I have a fellow autistic friend who is obsessed with callmeKevin to the point they have a cut out of him and posters plus a supportive fan account that talks about how cool his videos are and that's it. This movie is definitely offensive but I think a piece of media that examines how these kinds of things can happen in real life because of parasocial relationships and interactions with other mental health conditions could be interesting and informative, but of course it has to be handled well and this was definitely NOT it.
@@grumpysphinx4911 oh goodness I was kinda obsessed with Kevin's content too lmao. not to that extent, but yes, as a fellow autistic person, I FULLY RECOGNIZE that developing an obsession with a youtuber/streamer/whatever is purely because I like their *content,* and they have no idea who *I* am, and I would never be a psycho stalker. infuriating we're portrayed like this. ugh
The weirdest thing is that John's Travolta's son who passed away as a teenager was autistic so this is strange. He himself should know how this movie is just a terrible idea
Yes!!! Yes!!! I didn't believe this movie existed at first. I was like, naw his son was autistic he would never do a movie like this. Then I saw a review with clips and was horrified. I just don't understand how he could portray this character.
Both him and his late wife believed that their son’s autism was caused by chemicals in foods and that they were “curing” him through organic treatments and foods. They had unbelievably problematic and harmful views on autism so I don’t expect much from him in this regard.
I don't know why stalker movies need to resort to mental illness or in this case, neurodivergence as a plot device, when it real life the reason it happens, is because the stalker has some power over the victim, and that we also live in a very shitty society that doesn't really help victims.
A lot of stalking is related to partner abuse, that seems to be the most common narrative we never see. Instead they take those w mental illness and make them into a villain for no reason and in the end do more harm than good for both nuerodivergent ppl and those who are victims of stalking.
Like in inglourious basterds, the nazi war hero stalking the cinema owner because she was obviously uncomfortable with him but he knew she could not say no because of who he was... Showing up wherever she is as if he's just "popping in" the neighborhood or some shit and acting as if ignoring her saying no and she's not interested is somehow cute. Until she finally got enough and yelled at him and he got all rapey. Dude was drunk on his power and saw the victim as a conquest.
Probably due to ableism, neurotypical people can't fathom a fellow neurotypical (or "sane") person doing something that is bad that most people know is bad, so neurodivergence is easy for a neurotypical person writing a villain who does something such as stalking, murdering, etc. But "sane" people have done and still do fucked up shit. It's usually assumed that we all have the same knowledge so we should all know not do do bad things but obviously we don't, some assholes justify their shitty actions while others know that what they are doing is wrong but they don't care
It kinda feels like a cop-out to me. Not only is it offensive and degrading for folks struggling with mental illness, but I’m pretty convinced these directors think it will help with garnering a “sympathy vote” or trying to give a “flavor of nuance” if you will. Straight-up lazy writing. To all those directors and screenwriters, please do better.
Oh one more thing re: the names, you’re absolutely right about this film trying to gaslight you about who is the “good or bad” one. Moose-big, dumb, lumbering animal? Hunter-clever man with sharp sight and deadly aim? Gross.
sometimes it's scary to be autistic. we're either represented as superhuman geniuses, as childish and infantilized, as brutal aggressors or as the butt of a joke that doesn't seem to end. it's honestly so disheartening
Honestly… My stalker and my friends’ stalkers were perfectly sane. No mental disorder or illness. No neurotype. Nothing. Just a bunch of assholes with no respect for other people’s boundaries. I’m tired of TV and movies using a mental diagnosis as a way to give a character motive. Like, if you lack the ability to write a well thought out story, just stop. Please.
One thing about people assuming that is how neurotypical people are all assumed to have similar upbringings, with the same values, social cues and behaviors taught to them when in reality that is not the case. Not all people have the same knowledge, resources to that knowledge nor the same interpretation of said knowledge
I think it’s because there’s a lot of men making movies in Hollywood and they don’t wanna admit that most stalking cases are entitled men. I know women do it too, but it’s usually men that are told by society that they are nice guys that just need to convince the woman of how wonderful they are. By using a mental illness I think those creators can ignore that very uncomfortable truth.
Same. My stalker was in theater and had a bunch of friends, and he didn't stalk because of a mental illness. He did it because he was an awful, entitled person.
As a certified Autism™ I can confirm my favorite passtime is going extremely out of my way to have a social interaction with a neurotypical stranger I admire who is likely to reject me. I especially like doing this when they clearly do not want to talk to me and don't like me and very explicitly threatened to punch me in the face. Famously, autistic people love this.
Ah, yes, we, autistic people, famously disregard what others tell us, especially threats of violence. It doesn't make us stay up at night convinced we'll get killed at all, no ruminating on it ever! Our favourite type of interaction, we just can't get enough of it! (But actually for real, my favourite celebs generally seem like they have some nd tendencies. Neuro-typicals are more difficult to relate to for me lol)
I certainly do not nearly pass out when having exerted too much social energy because daily life demands it and am perfectly fine with sneaking into a party and later finding out where somebody lives and breaking into their house. Things that are very objectively Bad Things to do, the latter actually factually illegal by law. I,as an autistic person, am infamously known to not follow clear set boundaries to social interactions like this. Probably because I am a baby child with no agency or concept of right and wrong.
I know that one time I did have a crush on someone that I was too pushy with, but it was more that I was coming to terms with the fact that I was just different. I have always felt remorse about it as I know that no one should have to put up with that kind of behavior. However, I feel like it had more to do with the fact that I was in a new job and felt extremely awkward so my mental health did actually go downhill. But even then I wasn’t full on stalking the person I was just losing it. Because what happens when I get under extreme stress and pressure is I get terrible insomnia which will make you ill. Also I didn’t blame the person afterward I just felt extreme remorse. In reality it’s just really selfish and self absorbed people who would purposefully stalk someone who keeps rejecting them.
It’s why I tried to do everything I could to hide the fact that I had an IEP and my autism in high school. Took a long time to undo the trauma and shame I used to have surrounding my autism and how people treated me. Good to know another generation of autistic kids and teens will have to deal with this unending bullshit 🙄🙄🙄🙄
@@gabbyabbott4965 I'm so sorry you experienced that. And yeah it's heartbreaking to know this harmful misinfo is still being spread to influence more people who don't have any contact with actual autistic people.
@@rachellme77 I’m just so upset for the kids and adolescents that are still dealing and growing up with the same harmful stigmas I did ten years ago as a 14 year old. It’s just disappointing that we haven’t progressed enough.
I'm autistic and this movie is ridiculously offensive. Usually, our community is all about #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs (looking at your Sia) but I am glad this movie didn't hire an autistic actor to humiliate themself with this trash portrayal. I am obsessive about things for sure, that's common with special interests common with autism. I still respect people's boundaries and definitely would never break into anyone's home, as would the vast majority of autistic people. Of course there are bad people that are autistic (Elon Musk doesn't even have the decency to use the current term Autism Spectrum Disorder instead of the name of a Nazi that had children gassed for being autistic). Bad people exist in every demographic. Most autistic people are good people that just happen to have brains that work differently.
Um. Lol, you realize plenty of people were diagnosed with Asperger's before "woke" culture had it thrown out as an official medical term. Considering Elon's age he more than likely was diagnosed with Asperger's. People can refer to their diagnosis if they want. He isnt doing anything wrong by going by his proper diagnosis and plenty of people with Aspergers have stated they feel more comfortable going by that diagnosis.
@@JessieP07 Yeah, I do realize that people were diagnosed with Asperger's before because I was diagnosed with Asperger's originally. I personally find it extremely tasteless to want to identify with with a nazi over the word "autism." It's not some insane "woke" culture thing to be against nazis, given that being against nazis has been the the opinion of the general public since the 30s and 40s. The label was originally created to separate out the "useful" autistic people that could work for the nazis. Those who were deemed incapable of working for the nazis were gassed. They changed the name in the DSM-5 for a reason and people need to update their vocabulary.
Fellow autistic here and I agree. Just seeing the few scenes Kennie added to the video made my blood pressure rise. Like- yes, of course there are bad people that are autistic but if they're going for that, they could at least have given them malicious intent. Something about this "accidental" evil that results in so much harm with zero regret feels incredibly dehumanizing. Like yes, we do love what we love and get really deep into what interest us, but I'd say most of us would pause at the sight of a dead body.
I'd absolutely take no representation over this kind of trash representation. It's upsetting to think that there are people that think us to be this way, and this kind of portrayal will only cement these (wrong) opinions This movie feels like an anachronism, like something I would have expected to come from the 70's and not 2019
Good post. I don't think there's a problem with showing that a fixation can go too far and SOME people on the spectrum choose to disregard boundaries when it comes to an object of their fixation when that 'object' is a person. It happens and can be extremely scary for the fixation-ee. ...however... given the state of asd representation... if people are going to make movies about one of us who has that kind of boundary issues, it might be possible to, say, also include a protagonist or a likeable supporting character who is on the autism spectrum. Imagine that. Or even to explore the fact that people with ASD are often victims of stalking rather than perpetrators. Or maybe it would be nice to have movies showing people with ASD who aren't criminals, stalkers, or degrading stereotypes before we see more movies about those who are. Because right now it's not even remotely proportionate.
Also! Kennie, Moose is indeed supposed to be portrayed as someone with Autism, and the Dead Meat Podcast's Chelsea made kind of an analysis on how many levels of offensive bs The Fanatic truly was to people in the spectrum, because her sister is a psychologist that specializes in the area :)
...my sister is a bank manager. Doesn't make me an expert on managing banks. Yeah, the movie is awful, but Chris-chan exists, and he's far more offensive than anything in this movie to autism.
Admittedly I had a stalker in high school who was on the spectrum, but it was nothing like this, and his stalking wasn’t to do with his autism, but rather the fact that he was seemingly never told the word no in his entire life so he did not understand (or didn’t want to) someone not wanting him to follow them around all the time, or go through their backpack, or find their home address, just to name some of the highlights of his actions towards me.
Yeah it's wild how often stalker-ish behavior comes down to "they know if they keep asking you'll eventually say yes," but Ye Gods Forbid we deal with that aspect of people who push boundaries instead of just blaming it on the one thing that's "different"
@@cam4636 exactly! It's like the mass shooters who are described as mentally ill when no, they are entitled misogynistic/racist/homophobic etc. men throwing tantrums. It's the oppressive structures that are sick, not the individuals who fall for the propaganda and cause violence through their conditioning. Most mentally ill and neurodivergent people are victims of violence not instigators, and those who are, it's nearly always environment that causes it, not their intrinsic traits etc.
Things Hunter will do: Keep a shotgun near his bed Shoot someone’s hand off Gouge someone’s eye out Things Hunter won’t do: Buy a camera Call the police Listen to women
I cannot get over the fact that this movie is about a stan (stalker fan) and the guy playing Hunter Dunbar (Devon Sawa) is the SAME GUY who plays Stan in the Eminem music video.
This movie was dragged when it came out, and is still being dragged to this day. Don't worry, I don't think anybody walked out thinking "people on the spectrum are stalkers!".
characters like this always give off the vibe that the writer googled a list of symptoms and talked to approximately zero autistic people before deciding they had enough information to carry a whole movie. im so tired of hollywood interpreting "has a hard time with social cues and/or communication" as "basically a ten year old."
As an autistic woman with two autistic teens, I have a lot of big feelings about this one. First and foremost, thank you @kenniejd for putting out there how fucked up it is to use autism as a plot device, and how poor the representation has been for us in media. I think a this film fell somewhere between an anxious fever dream of all my worries about what could happen when my 6’2 son gets pulled over by police and his sense of logic or panic take over-and Hollywood trying to have a good ole time with “us vs them” pot-stirring fun. I don’t want to get into everywhere I agree or disagree with you, but I just really want to thank you for recognizing and pointing out a lot of the ableist bullshit. 💖
"Magical knee grow" is a figment of Moose's imagination. He never actually existed. 😂 This is terrifying thinking about celebrities this actually happens to. Yikes. Being famous must be a nightmare.
On the topic of naming someone Moose, my friend has dated multiple guys with animal animals (Moose, Bear, Tiger, Mouse, just to name a few) so yes, Moose is a real name
As their actual names on birth certificates or nicknames? Cause I've heard Moose as a nickname but never a legit "Here's your baby, ma'am! Awww I'mma name him Moose 😭!" and I live in Florida. Well maybe it's a northern thing :/
Hey Kennie! Found a movie to add to your list: "Never Too Young to Die" (1986) is an action-adventure comedy starring John Stamos, Vanity and Gene Simmons. "A top secret agent is murdered, so his estranged son, a high school gymnast, teams up with his dad's attractive female partner to stop the psychopathic hermaphroditic gang leader who killed him." Edit: I don't have a Twitter account but if you do feel free to tweet Kennie!
Oh lordie when I saw the community post I was excited to see you drag this movie. Also it’s kinda ironic that Devin Sawa is playing a celebrity being stalked when he himself played Stan in Eminem’s iconic music video Stan where we got the slang term stan from. Even more funny that the movie is directed by Fred Durst who had beef with Eminem back in the early 2000s. If you wanna watch a good stalker movie that isn’t horror but it’s still entertaining I would recommend Ingrid goes west which has Aubrey Plaza and Elizabeth Olsen. Edit: also the fact that Fred Durst wrote and directed this movie just makes me cringe and sigh even more because he is the worst so it makes sense that his movie would be the worst (but that first limp bizket album was still a banger)
Hol' up, FRED DURST?! OF LIMP BIZKIT?! That man wrote/directed a movie and got JOHN TRAVOLTA TO BE IN IT!?! This just make me feel movies are money laundering fronts cause even with it being a failure how did the Nookie guy get this far? Mind you I used to be a Limp Bizkit fan so I'm not just being mean, I'm genuinely suspicious of how we got here.
ngl it's kinda weird because they could have made a conversational piece about when fans or a fan crosses the line or when reality/fantasy is blurred but instead they made whatever...this is.
Makin autistic ppl (or anybody with a mental illness) the villains in horror/thriller films is disgusting, they wanna be treated as human beings like everyone else but instead they get portrayed as psychos in these types of movies, which does a huge disservice to those types of ppl IRL. Moose is a funny name tho lmaooo 😅
...I know what you meant, but "psycho" is literally an insult aimed at people with psychotic disorders (and people with other disorders that end up getting thrown under the same bus) to dehumanize them as "crazy and dangerous."
I think it would be ok to have an autistic villain (I am autistic myself) but when their whole character is being autistic and autism is used as almost a “reason” for why they are a villain is when it’s not ok
its really sad and frustrating to watch lazy horror screenwriters go from mental condition to mental condition because the scariest thing they can imagine is "what if my fear and disgust of neurodivergent people was justified" (or in a broader way sometimes just "what if i were disabled :o ")
I can't believe Devon Sawa is in a movie about a stalker fan. Cause he played Stan in the Eminem video where the term "stan" comes from. So Stan has a stan now. Stanception.
Honestly as someone who has autism and also works with patients that have autism. I don't think we'll ever get a movie that doesn't use it as just a plot device. (Unless it's made by those in the community.) People don't wNt to deal with us since we make them uncomfortable. Even in my unit certain staff don't want to work with the neurodivergent people due to this. It's beyond aggrevating.
I recently watched the new "Heartbreak High" on Netflix, and one of the main characters is an autistic girl named Quinni. Now I'm by no means an expert, but from what I can tell, the series avoided all the biggest stereotypes (straight cis white adult manchild who's insensitive, weird, emotionally cold and isn't interested in relationships) - Quinni is cheerful and creative young girl who likes fashion and wants to make her own comic book one day, she's VERY emotionally intelligent and loyal to her friends who in turn love and support her. Also, she's a lesbian (and definitely not an asexual), and a huge chunk of her storyline is devoted to her and her neurotypical girlfriend Sasha trying to work it out and understand each other.
Fuck this whole premise!! I had a stalker and I am still traumatized from it. The cops don’t do anything. When you call a stalker a stalker in my experience they DO get upset like this. And to let the victim go to prison with the stalker free was a sick and horrible ending 🤬 But I love your videos LOL
As a librarian I 1000% agree with this. My coworkers and I have all had to deal with patrons borderline stalking us at work, some with some form of disability and sometimes not. For us its just as real and scary, especially when its hard to get patrons banned from a public place. We all do our best to keep each other safe, especially if we find out a patron has fixated on one specific librarian. We've also been urged to call security if we feel threatened (its happened to me twice in the last year alone). Stay safe everyone.
thank you for your point about this portrayal of autism being offensive - as someone with autism, it's so hard to find representation that isn't being played for laughs, demonised or treating us like we're all savants. i just want an autistic character who is relatable and "normal" without being creepy, a super-genius or used as a tool to progress a plot without having their own thoughts and feelings. it's weird how conflicting depictions of autism can be - we're either treated as useless burdens or have literal superpowers, no inbetween.
As an autistic person I just cannot imagine being so bold in the ways that moose is. Being obessive? absolutely. But taking initiative to track a guy down and sneak into places I'm not supposed to be? I would be so anxious about being caught or about the person I was obsessed with not liking me. If I got snubbed in the signing line like Moose was, I might cry or ask an employee if he was coming back but I wouldn't follow him. Us autistics are anxious creatures especially in novel social situations so his actions absolutely baffle me. But then he's NOT bold in the ways I would be, like with Todd bullying him. Autistic people tend to have a strong sense of justice and can't stand being wronged or treated unfairly (or watching other people being wronged or treated unfairly) so again it baffles me that he doesnt do anything much earlier. Like todd is doing illegal stuff he could literally call the cops on him. Instead he just complains behind his back which is more of an allistic thing to do. Basically he's confrontational in all the wrong ways which makes it clear to me that no autistic person was consulted here, although I think that was already apparent. I also hate the fact that he does not care about the woman he accidentally killed. It's a common and harmful myth that autistic people don't have any empathy but in my experience its the exact opposite. I cry about accidentally killing bugs you would not catch me leaving a woman to die when I could do something to help (like idk calling 911???).
I heard a psychiatrist on UA-cam describe two components of empathy which are cognitive and emotional. Psychopaths, and Narcissists struggle with emotional empathy. Emotional empathy is the ability to feel another’s pain, for example being sad because your friend is sad that her grandma died. Autistic people have emotional empathy and often times are extremely empathetic emotionally. However autistic people in general do struggle with cognitive empathy. Cognitive empathy is the ability to tell what others are feeling. As an autistic person myself I very much struggle with cognitive empathy but have a lot of emotional empathy. This movie unfortunately misses that distinction and portrays autism horribly.
The funniest scene for me is when Hunter asks his son if he likes Limp Bizkit. A band his small child has probably never heard of because they haven’t been big in twenty years but you figure is probably a very important question to the WRITER/DIRECTOR OF THE FILM, a Mr. Fred Durst the frontman for, you guessed it, Limp Bizkit. Absolutely wild.
“Keep rollin, rollin, rollin, rollin” was probably Fred Durst’s mantra during the film’s production. He didn’t care about the film being good or not, he just did it for the nookie. As a result, this is one of the worst films of my generation.
I'm gonna be honest I have no idea where the stereotype of people on the spectrum being "dangerous" even comes from. Every autistic person I've ever met is just... normal. Just normal and nice and probably so good at masking you can barely tell. As someone (most likely) on the spectrum myself, the most I'd do to you is try to talk to you about my favorite dragon quest sequel.
My grandma nicknamed me Moose when I was a little girl. I didn’t think it was an odd nickname until I got older, then I wondered, “Why Moose?” I was told it was because I was a particularly sturdy baby, whatever that means. That’s all I have to say about that.
Ngl, as someone who's Autistic themselves this kind of Media makes me super uncomfortable. It's honestly of hard to watch, even in review form, because the message feels like it's saying "look how dangerous these people can be!" . Media like this also often just feels... unintentionally cruel to these Characters. Also in how aspects of Autism that may be Neutral to Positive for the Autistic Person get connected to the terrible things they do, thus framing everything as harmful. Funnily enough the first time I saw a Movie mess it up like this was in one of those Airbud spinoff centered around his Children, in which the Puppies go to Space and encounter a Cosmonaut driven crazy by isolation. The worst part is probably the ending where they just... leave him on the space station and take the dog that was previously with him back to earth. That terrified me as a kid.
I’m begging you to review The Dirty D on Tubi. It only has 3 episodes at the moment but it is chaotic but quite interesting. This is the type of carrying on we need on this series
As someone finally diagnosed with ASD this past month, this movie makes me feel so viscerally sick and I point blank refuse to watch it. BUT will I thoroughly enjoy watching Miss Kennie rip it to shreds and talk about it for half an hour? You betcha
I couldn't finish this Kennie, as someone in the spectrum it triggered me. Like sure Autistic people can also be bad people, but man if neurotypicals get mostly good or neutral representations in media why can't we have that too.
John Travolta actually had a child on the spectrum that passed away years ago. Surprising he would choose to do a role like this. Additionally, he recently lost his wife/the mother of said child :(
They both believed that their son’s autism was caused by chemicals in food and his wife claimed to be “curing” him with organic food etc. so I’m sadly not surprised at all that John Travolta would lean into problematic and harmful stereotypes about autism.
I can't believe the person in charge of casting read about a timid, awkward, geeky man & thought "Y'know, John Travolta is perfect for this.". 😂😂? Him being taller and beefier than his own bully, but trying to seem scared just threw me off. It's way scarier when you hear news of a small, scrawny person killing someone larger than them or several people at once, as it shows how changed you can be when you snap.
Oooooh the ableism nooo 😳😳 now I’m autistic and even hearing about this movie made me mad! Like you said there’s not lots of good autistic representation and then you have this which demonise autistics people, which can be not only a little triggering but also leads to people thinking autistic people are bad and forces even more sterotypes which is literally a constant battle that autistic people face, like again you said it was used sympathy which is UGHHH 🤦🏻♂️ I don’t know this makes sense but thank you for talking about the ableism in this movie, it’s just annoying to face this constantly
I've seen it. I also hated it, especially the ending because of the reason you covered. I don't know how true this is, but I read that Moose is John Travolta's favorite character that he's ever played and that he based his portrayal of Moose on his son Jett. Jett was autistic and died some years before this movie came out.
It always wilds me out to see how neurotypical ppl tend to write autistic ppl because it truly makes me think they have never seen let alone talked to a person that's autistic. Like the two Autism tm tropes seem to be super genius asshole or permachild with no ability to understand the world. Like I'm autistic, most of my friends are autistic, we arent identical to a neurotypical person yeah but like we are just kinda normal dudes that like maybe act a little odd sometimes. Like it feels almost like ppl want it to be a distinct difference, that you can't treat autistic ppl the same because theres an innate difference
Also it gets my goat that to be a creep or a stalker there has to be a Thing that makes them not "normal" and that it's almost always some form of neurodivergence. Cause the guy that borderline stalked my husband for several years, dated anyone he could to get closer to him, made fake accounts to message him, and choked him unconscious on his own house only to tell it as a funny story the next day in class, was neurotypical. The only thing wrong with him was that he had a glass ego, a 4chan account, and the ability to convince himself that he somehow the most fuckable person in a room. Idk maybe it's the idea that it could just be anyone has the ability to do bad shit in equal measure that squicks out people so it makes it easier to just signal neurodivergence as the cause
Just started watching this video and had a good laugh at your response to the name Moose. My dad's fraternity roommate was nicknamed Moose and he still goes by it to this day, 60 years later.
As someone who has had a stalker who was definitely not on the spectrum and knew exactly what he was doing, that is the story that should be told not putting people with mental conditions in the role of a nasty terrible person
Yeah in a way it also gives people who do that an excuse in a way, saying that no "sane" person would ever do this or even worse but "sane" neurotypical people have done and still do fucked up shit
"Hotter than Satan's coochie" Any other month, I'd be just laughing my ass off But being June, I laughed and also clapped at the idea that Satan could be a woman 😂 Representation is key! Happy Pride yall 🏳️🌈
As the mom of 4 children on the autism spectrum I can wholeheartedly say there isn’t much positive representation of people in the autism community. They’re either portrayed as savants or violent… I’ve seen several horror movies lately depicting people on the spectrum as evil and it’s extremely offensive and quite honestly the complete opposite of the majority of people on the spectrum. My children are sweet, loving, and non-violent….🤦🏾♀️ do better Hollywood. Side note: if I remember correctly didn’t John Travolta have an autistic son who passed away after falling off of a boat or drowning? I vaguely remember hearing something to that effect…edit: I was off about the boat, his son passed away after having a seizure and hit his head in the bathtub 😢
Where's the movie where tourette's is villainized,,, since we're going into neurological disorders Honestly, as someone w tourettes, it'd be a breath of fresh air to be treated as a villain in a movie rather than a joke
I wrote a short review on letterboxd about this movie in 2020! This was it: Was it kinda funny in a lame, cheesy kind of way? Yes. Was some of the violence brutal? Yes. Was it offensive? OH yes. Sorry, but the portrayal of people with autism is just... No. It’s like the director googled “autism symptoms” and handed the printed off page to Travolta. And frankly, it’s what made some of the violence so hard to watch. I literally watched what was supposed to be an autistic man get stabbed in the eye. And something about that doesn’t sit right with me.
I'd just like to say,,, thank you Kennie. Thanks to you I got my shit together and bought my first five squishmallows and honestly they are so lovely. Ty queen
Don’t feel bad about laughing at doodoo and boo-boo. I literally said the other day that my country gravy was thick like Rihanna so it was perfect. And there was a tiktok where a guy saw lights out on a pep boy’s sign and he laughed saying “pp boys” over and over.
I have multiple autistic cousins. Some born with clef palet and with heart outside of the chest. Only one hurts himself/others very violently because he doesn’t know his own strength but he also bites. He loves maroon 5 through his headphones. He loves his family but he literally cannot control his anger. They have triggers. You will not see them unsupervised. They will not commit murder. It is the ppl that have hatred in their hearts that would pull off something like what this movie portrayed.
Obviously “Moose” is short for “Moosestaphies”. 😂😂😂 The only time I’ve heard the name Moose is from the Archie comics. I always thought it was a nickname….

As someone with grad studies in the field of psychology and that has a brother and best friend within the autism spectrum, this movie is INFURIATING. I can’t believe people put actual money into its development.
Tried to watch this movie with a group of friends. One of them is disabled. The movie upset her so much she went to lay down and take a nap waiting for it to be over. We shut it off and watched the 90's Godzilla instead. Infinite improvement.
i can't watch this video bc i'm autistic and i can tell i'll get too pissed but thank you for speaking out against offensive rep of ppl on the spectrum
THANK YOU SO SO SO SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO OMG!! I have autism and I'm so happy to see someone without autism(I assume) talk about this. No one listens to us and I'm just so happy that you are bringing attention to this problem!
I'm autistic and have gotten a strong interest in people as well as sometimes not understanding boundaries and I've met fellow autistic people like me a few times. All of our boundary breaking usually came down to not understanding non obvious cues that people did not want to hang out or be friends and occasionally missing cues or mistaking them for jokes that my friends didn't want to hold hands or hug. Pretty uncomfortable for the people and I still feel bad. Nowhere near stalker level, no one becomes a stalker because of autism just by itself. That's not how autism works, to really stalk someone you have to be conscious of what you are doing and the moves you are making to get there. Blaming it on autism is a great way to ensure that the stalker doesn't have to take responsibility for their actions.

Stalker movies using actual mental illnesses, that don’t always correlate with stalking, as an explanation for said stalking is so extremely uncomfortable. Stop it, please and thank you
Right they'll be like he was a stalker but he also had psychotic depression so pls cut some slack 🥺
Like these two things do not correlate at all💀
Yes, if he had somethings like erotomanic delusions, then this would be an explanation.
Facts! I love your take on it very well said my friend ❤
Omg literalllyyy!!!!!!!!!
Honestly, same
@@grumpysphinx4911 oh goodness I was kinda obsessed with Kevin's content too lmao. not to that extent, but yes, as a fellow autistic person, I FULLY RECOGNIZE that developing an obsession with a youtuber/streamer/whatever is purely because I like their *content,* and they have no idea who *I* am, and I would never be a psycho stalker. infuriating we're portrayed like this. ugh

Crazy people aren't always mentally ill. I know someone who admitted to stalking people and he's just an obsessive weirdo.
A lot of stalking is related to partner abuse, that seems to be the most common narrative we never see. Instead they take those w mental illness and make them into a villain for no reason and in the end do more harm than good for both nuerodivergent ppl and those who are victims of stalking.
@@Kawaiicarly Exactly
It's usually assumed that we all have the same knowledge so we should all know not do do bad things but obviously we don't, some assholes justify their shitty actions while others know that what they are doing is wrong but they don't care
the infantalization of people with autism is gross and abelist and this movie plays right into that
It kinda feels like a cop-out to me.
@@broomhilder agree. Very lazy writing
Oh one more thing re: the names, you’re absolutely right about this film trying to gaslight you about who is the “good or bad” one. Moose-big, dumb, lumbering animal? Hunter-clever man with sharp sight and deadly aim? Gross.
HOW did i not catch that omg

sometimes it's scary to be autistic. we're either represented as superhuman geniuses, as childish and infantilized, as brutal aggressors or as the butt of a joke that doesn't seem to end. it's honestly so disheartening
Please.
Right! There are enough just plain assholes in the world, but apparently professional writers can’t figure out what to do with that.
One thing about people assuming that is how neurotypical people are all assumed to have similar upbringings, with the same values, social cues and behaviors taught to them when in reality that is not the case. Not all people have the same knowledge, resources to that knowledge nor the same interpretation of said knowledge
@@devonmunn5728 o.o
In reality it’s just really selfish and self absorbed people who would purposefully stalk someone who keeps rejecting them.
as an autistic person, I gotta say I'm so exhausted by how the majority of media about us is so goddamn infantilizing.
Same. And it's like, have any of them ever met an autistic adult? Like, someone in their twenties or thirties??
It’s why I tried to do everything I could to hide the fact that I had an IEP and my autism in high school. @Sharp Cheddar That is actually a good bio film.
It's upsetting to think that there are people that think us to be this way, and this kind of portrayal will only cement these (wrong) opinions
This movie feels like an anachronism, like something I would have expected to come from the 70's and not 2019

Boohoo
its really sad and frustrating to watch lazy horror screenwriters go from mental condition to mental condition because the scariest thing they can imagine is "what if my fear and disgust of neurodivergent people was justified" (or in a broader way sometimes just "what if i were disabled :o ")
I was NOT expecting that maid twist, because I was really wondering where she went and how no one called the police.
I can't believe Devon Sawa is in a movie about a stalker fan. Cause he played Stan in the Eminem video where the term "stan" comes from. So Stan has a stan now. Stanception.

I just noticed it too 😭 sorry guys
i'm neurodivergent & recently saw my fav band live - spoiler alert i did not feel the need to stalk them whAt a SurpRise :)
Honestly as someone who has autism and also works with patients that have autism. I don't think we'll ever get a movie that doesn't use it as just a plot device. (Unless it's made by those in the community.)
People don't wNt to deal with us since we make them uncomfortable.
Seems to me if you're part of a religion who doesn't believe a disorder exists, you shouldn't be allowed to portray someone with that disorder.
Agree 💯
AMEN
Fuck this whole premise!! I had a stalker and I am still traumatized from it. The cops don’t do anything. When you call a stalker a stalker in my experience they DO get upset like this. And to let the victim go to prison with the stalker free was a sick and horrible ending 🤬
But I love your videos LOL
@@nicolepenners9198 that makes a lot of sense. I often have a hard time figuring out what other people are feeling which adds to my social anxiety.

The funniest scene for me is when Hunter asks his son if he likes Limp Bizkit. Absolutely wild.
As an Autistic person I can say, I've never broken into someones house nor do I have any desire to.

“Keep rollin, rollin, rollin, rollin” was probably Fred Durst’s mantra during the film’s production. He didn’t care about the film being good or not, he just did it for the nookie. As a result, this is one of the worst films of my generation.
Ok that made me audibly laugh hahaha
Spittin facts! I was shocked to learn it was "inspired" by an experience had by Durst
Holy fuck ar eyou telling me Fred Durst is responsible for this shite?

The fact that some man can be in my house under my kids bed stealing toys 🧍🏾♀️ I hate that 🧌
I’m begging you to review The Dirty D on Tubi.
You betcha
Honestly the whole maid subplot was extremely uncomfortably reminiscent of 'Of Mice and Men'
I couldn't finish this Kennie, as someone in the spectrum it triggered me. Like sure Autistic people can also be bad people, but man if neurotypicals get mostly good or neutral representations in media why can't we have that too.
the "neurotypicals get mostly good or neutral representation" made something inside my brain click and I already agreed with this take. thank you sm
Is it even a saturday without Bad Movies & a Beat? 💆🏽♀️💅🏽🥳
Yes
But we all know she makes it Better
John Travolta actually had a child on the spectrum that passed away years ago. Surprising he would choose to do a role like this. Additionally, he recently lost his wife/the mother of said child :(
They both believed that their son’s autism was caused by chemicals in food and his wife claimed to be “curing” him with organic food etc. so I’m sadly not surprised at all that John Travolta would lean into problematic and harmful stereotypes about autism.
@@charliebrown1796 Don't forget Travolta's also a Scientologist--they believe psychology is evil brainwashing and neurodivergence can be 'cured.'
I was waiting for this one, imagining Kennie’s reaction to all this bullshit!
This movie is very scary. To think that something like this happened in real life to Rebecca Schaefer because of an obsessed guy is disheartening
"GBF! It's like Mean Girls, but gay."
you mean to tell me Mean Girls ain't gay
You're always gorgeous but you look so cute in the adroll. Must be the combo of that tan and that pink or something but you are 💫glowing💫
Same I know a guy nicknamed mouse but the fact that people have those at their government names is kind of hilarious
As someone who has had a stalker who was definitely not on the spectrum and knew exactly what he was doing, that is the story that should be told not putting people with mental conditions in the role of a nasty terrible person
But also this is giving of mice and men vibes ???
Yeah in a way it also gives people who do that an excuse in a way, saying that no "sane" person would ever do this or even worse but "sane" neurotypical people have done and still do fucked up shit
"Hotter than Satan's coochie"
Any other month, I'd be just laughing my ass off
But being June, I laughed and also clapped at the idea that Satan could be a woman 😂
Representation is key! Happy Pride yall 🏳️🌈
i always imagined satan as a woman, with a lot of male christians hating women and all
😂😂😂
I don't think that necessarily implies Satan's a woman lmfao 💙💕🤍💕💙
@@starchilde8698 I think Satan is probably all of the gender spectrum all at once...
Autistic people in Hollywood movies: obsessed creepy stalkers
Autistic people irl: Sonic The Hedgehog merchandise collector
So the same thing *rimshot*.
Kennie never ceases to make great content out of the worst movies, she's truly the bravest of us all
Thank you so much for your defense of autistic people. There's so much bad representation of autistic people and it really sucks.
CMON TAN!! my sisters been catching some sun iktr
Choked when Kennie said "flying negro"
Where's the movie where tourette's is villainized,,, since we're going into neurological disorders
Honestly, as someone w tourettes, it'd be a breath of fresh air to be treated as a villain in a movie rather than a joke
I wrote a short review on letterboxd about this movie in 2020! This was it:
Was it kinda funny in a lame, cheesy kind of way?

Don’t feel bad about laughing at doodoo and boo-boo. I literally said the other day that my country gravy was thick like Rihanna so it was perfect. And there was a tiktok where a guy saw lights out on a pep boy’s sign and he laughed saying “pp boys” over and over.
Yeah I have the sense of humor of a 12 year old as well haha
I have multiple autistic cousins. Some born with clef palet and with heart outside of the chest. Only one hurts himself/others very violently because he doesn’t know his own strength but he also bites. He loves maroon 5 through his headphones. He loves his family but he literally cannot control his anger. They have triggers.
You will not see them unsupervised. They will not commit murder. It is the ppl that have hatred in their hearts that would pull off something like what this movie portrayed.
Obviously “Moose” is short for “Moosestaphies”. 😂😂😂
The only time I’ve heard the name Moose is from the Archie comics. I always thought it was a nickname….
Apparently Moose's real name was Marmaduke lol.
@@ImmortalBroken ……………………….I see why he went by Moose.

Thank you for calling out the ableism in this movie.
As someone with grad studies in the field of psychology and that has a brother and best friend within the autism spectrum, this movie is INFURIATING. I can’t believe people put actual money into its development.
Don't get yourself to riled up. This movie was directed by Limp Bizkit. Yes you read right. Fred Durst. I laughed all throughtout this mess.
Excuse me? Lmfaooo
See this is what happens when you split away from Samuel Jackson and try to do your own thing.
This made me choke 😂😂😂😂
Thank you kennie! Myself and my youngest kiddo fall on the autism spectrum... This movie seems so clueless girl 🤦🏻♀️
John travolta is what sends me about this movie like sir you aren’t blending in shit you’re JOHN TRAVOLTA 😭😭😭
