Hey, thanks a lot for pushing the PFD. Many people don't realize that a kayak tipping over is a very unlikely event. In my opinion, being tipped out of the kayak, especially many of the. Sit-on-top styles, is by far more like!! That means the kayak still stays upright, and you were just kind of tipped out it almost feels like you got thrown out. So you're in the water, and the kayak in the process of tipping you out get shoved away from you,. And if there's even the slightest of wind the kayak will rapidly blow away from you. This can happen amazingly fast and swimming to try catch up with it may not be possible"( this is because the kayak is so light and sit so high in the water the breeze or wind can catch it and blow it at amazing speeds. If you don't have a good flotation device you are in real trouble. Your only hope is someone to see you or maybe be close enough to shore just swim there. If you are in an isolated area, it may even be wise to hook a rope, or lanyard or, a strap between you and your kayak. Orbi fishing on a real calm day. There is even a danger if your fishing on the calm side of the lake and the wind is blowing offshore. The water maybe calm but you don't realize there is maybe a lively Breeze blowing your kayak quicker than you realize. Bonus! This can also happen in a canoe, they are harder to get tipped out of, but if you do they sit so high in the air and Solo in the water they can blow away from you at speeds that people can't even imagine. @@charadremur333 I'm exactly the opposite! I'll fish in the heat all day. I'll fight through the cold to a certain extent, but once the air gets below 40, I'll probably stay in my boat.
In the market for my first kayak! I'm in my 30s and never caught anything other than trout in my life until this year and I caught white bass, a Smallmouth, and some Crappies for the first time and I love it! Looking to target some walleye and largemouth in the spring. Live in Utah so not as many spots to fish for those. 😂
picked up a 10lb anchor at a yard sale for $3. Milk crate has been a must since day one, attached four cut down PVC with heavy duty zip ties to hold my rods and net. Bungee it down to my kayak. Got leashes for my poles and I cover the hooks on the rod with pool noodles, just in case I flip in the surf....wouldn't want to catch a hook... Buy what you can afford, hit yard sales and Facebook Marketplace, etc.
Great information. I have found over the years that my mud stick is the most used item on my yak. In alot of situations my anchor wont hold and my mud stick/anchor pin have saved me alot of trouble.
Well done for a starter's needs. Some additional suggestions: for life jacket, I use an inflatable type - I have a high seat, and the only thing between me and the seat is the harness. BUT one needs to be mindful to change the cartridge per instructions after a long period of time. For an anchor I use the 4 leaf type; there are videos of how to rig it with a zip tie so it does not become stuck in rocks, tree stumps, etc. One objection to your anchor rope retrieval: if for some reason you could be in danger of being swamped, either have a sharp dedicated knife immediately available or find another way to handle the anchor line which can be immediately "unacnhored". Something which keeps the anchor line excess contained but can be tossed overboard and float. Coiled lanyards reduce clutter of multiple items tethered by 550 cord - and should go on anything you don't want to lose: fishing poles, non-floating nets, hawg trough, and anything else expensive enough you don't want to lose it. Great presentation - hope you don't mind the alternatives.
Exactly right. "Something which keeps the anchor line excess contained but can be tossed overboard and float." I sawed off a plastic 8"DIA orange Home Depot pail, injected foam into it, and put perimeter brackets on it to wrap the excess. Hangs from my anchor trolley with a carabiner that I can unclip quickly. Lets me go fetch a stuck fish or stuck lure.
A MUST for any boater is A PERSONAL AIR HORN. While the pole light is required in many states an air horn sadly is not. LOUD AIR HORN NOISE IS YOUR FRIEND when a wayward speed boat or jet ski comes at you and the boat's Captain doesn't see you. Keep it in your PFD pocket for quick reach. I have a commercial grade Pelican Peddle Boat and NEVER PUSH OFF WITHOUT MY AIR HORN.
If you're going to buy a PFD with the mesh lower back and the flotation all pushed up to the top, make damn sure it clears YOUR seatback. Some backrests are much higher than others. If the foam isn't quite high enough, your PFD will be pushed up around your ears and you'll be miserably uncomfortable. There are touring and fishing PFDs with thin, full-length rear foam which are also suiited to highback seats, and they work with all of them.
Love your work and hints mate. I'm more of a land based hunter than fisher. Good stuff Gene! I would also add a pair of cutters to the list. You never know when a fish will go nuts and stick you see with a hook in the wrong place of your hand...makes it really difficult to paddle!
Yak, thanks for making this video! All kayakers should practice self rescue and buddy rescue before they need those skills. Also, get some water safety training from your state DNR, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, Power Squadron or the American Canoe and Kayak Association. It could save your life.
I'd like to add: Be very careful when using the fish grips. It's real easy for a big bass to shake and they slip out of your hand. That would be really bad for the fish. If it's not tethered to the boat at least put the loop over your wrist or just be careful and focus on keeping a good grip while using them.
That just happened to my fishing buddy...needles to say the bass now has grips attached to it...no bueno, but he learned his lesson...I felt bad for that largemouth...

Something no one mentions is what do you do with the keepers. Its not practical to put a live well on the kayak. Do you carry a bucket and hope it fits without tipping you? Do you put the fish on a stringer? I wouldn't recommend this if there are large predators like sharks or alligators in the water. Do you tow a floating livewell behind you?
A lot of kayak tournaments will do length of fish, then release. Stringers down here in Florida are a no go like you said. Or if it’s a fish you’re keeping to eat many folks will use a cooler

When you pull it up, drain the water and you basically have a now weightless anchor

Thanks so much for your info Gene AKA "DA FLUKEMASTER" ;-)
Make sure if you get an anchor that you get a quick release...that way you can release yourself from the anchor of necessary...also get yourself a whistle and attach it to you pfd...
Knowledge time.... I’m a bigger guy and in process of researching yaks. My two biggest standards are it needs to be super stable and having some not do good knees something easy to maneuver around on....
I would add for those buying their first kayak, there is no measure of importance that you can place on a comfortable seat. My first boat wasn't bad for a first boat. It was a field and stream and a decent kayak for the $400 I paid for it. But it had one of those seat pads that sits on the hull itself. They are super uncomfortable after a very short amount of time, and inevitably you get water in the boat and since you're sitting on the hull you end up with swamp ass. I tried to find an aftermarket raised seat, but couldn't really find one for the shape of that boat. In the end the seat situation made me completely hate the whole boat. Within a few months I sold it and got a vibe seaghost 110 instead and I love it. Raised and framed seats are the way to go 100%.
I’d say reflectors and a flag are an absolute must if you’re on water where anyone runs boats, and a life or death item on big lakes with bass and ski boats. Kayakers are killed by boats every year, even in bright colored yaks.
Those retractable dog leashes you get at pet stores make the best anchor rope system for kayaks and they come in different lengths, so be sure to get a long one.
This video was perfect and perfect timing. Any suggestions on how to keep your kids close lol? Plan on starting them all kayak fishing this spring. Oh and I love your channel always great content!
I don't like the bar into my back . My pfd, throw cushion is behind me to cushion from the bar. I got the 106 Oldtown pdl for my first Kayak . I love it . I don't need an anchor.
As someone who is just getting into yak fishing and coming from a 16' boat...i gotta slim it down lol!!! Even with a 16' boat, we have the boat packed when we go out.
That is one of the hardest things to do. I have four or five 3600 boxes that I pack before each kayak tournament or trip. If my tackle doesn't fit in those then it ain't going with me.
I just found this video and I am trying to get into some kayak fishing. However- due to limited space- I am looking into an inflatable one. Any suggestions on that?
Thanks Gene! I'm looking into getting my first yak for getting into the skinny water. I'm a big guy (6'1 320 pound) with a budget of around $1000 what boat would you recommend. I've been leaning towards the big fish 120. Thoughts?
I'm 6' and 260 lbs and I use a Vibe sea ghost 110 and love it. It has in-hull storage, which several do not have. It also has a center console and comes prepped for mounting radar. The rudder has been useful even in directing the boat during windy situations on the small lake near my house. Just my thoughts on my boat. I will say that whichever boat you choose, do NOT go with one that just has a pad for a seat. They suck, bad. Been there done that, and it will make you hate an otherwise good boat. Get one with a framed seat that is raised off of the hull, which the one you've been looking at does have.
I have had mine for a year now and there is one thing that I really wished I had on it, A Fish Finder, not really let me know where the were but how deep the water was and where the drop-off were. So I would add that to my list, fingers cross that Santa brings me one
I got a pelican 100x Angler yesterday and I am going to use it for the first time on friday. I am so excited! I got everything ready that I would need most of what you mentioned and other misc stuff. I am 5'11 weighing 204 pounds with approx 20 pounds of gear. I hope it will be stable for just the lakes around here in nebraska. I am using my gf's car to get it around which is a chevy cruze lol but I dont want to scratch up my camaro :p I am just freaked out of touching fish I mean I got decent gloves and like pliers and stuff to remove the hooks but how can I get over this. I dont even know like where to touch certain fish etc
Of all the stuff you have I think the Georgia Bulldog hat is the most important!!! lol, HOW BOUT THEM DAWGS!! I subscribed and love the video, just bought my first fishing kayak!
So I want to get a kayak and most of the ones I come across with the seat are 12 ft. Some say 250-300 some say 400 and some I’ve see say 500. I’m a big guy 5’6” last weighed 300 lbs. what would be the best size?
Brother great video. UA-cam knows I’m looking at Kayaks! Perfect timing to show up and yes I know it’s based on the algorithms! Lol! But seriously thank you 👍
Fluke, you forgot one other 'must have' - balance - haven't flipped my Tuna yet, but do know the day is coming, especially if I start trying to stand and fish!! Merry Christmas!!
QUESTION: I am planning on getting one and have zero knowledge on one. I want one that is stable cause I’m 220lbs without any gear. I’m fishing for pike and walleye and should I get a paddle kayak or a foot peddle kayak? Thanks!
The one thing you didn't mention about the plano boxes......do they float? I've been looking for a good waterproof box like that, but one that floats. My keys won't do me any good if they are safe from water at the bottom of the lake! lol

Just bought myself a feelfree lure today! This is my go to video for info.
Awesome. Your gonna love fishing from a kayak
Awesome. Your gonna love fishing from a kayak
I’m so excited to start kayaking
Knowledge time.... I’m a bigger guy and in process of researching yaks. My two biggest standards are it needs to be super stable and having some not do good knees something easy to maneuver around on....
Jackson kayak big rig for a big man. I love mine.
just bought my first one after friends at work talked about how much fun it is to fish off of
I would add for those buying their first kayak, there is no measure of importance that you can place on a comfortable seat.
Awesome video brother great advise. I keep a whistle w me as well just incase on cold fall days
More videos about the kayak please and more fishing from a kayak
Thank you for your time and your passion. Great list. Subscribed
Thanks
@Flukemaster thank you for this video. I’m new to the kayak fishing scene so I’ll definitely be buying some of the items you recommend.
Go dawgs! And here for a list for my third kayak but first serious one. Looking at a bonafide rs117 or Jackson bite /nucanoe flint
Very helpful to a newbie kayaker. Or would be kayaker.
Harley Davidson-Hundred dollars.
Kayak accessories as listed in video- $90. Lol. Awesome video. Great tips! Keep it up. Safe floats!
That net is BAD ASS dude! Looks so cool
This video was perfect and perfect timing. Any suggestions on how to keep your kids close lol? Plan on starting them all kayak fishing this spring. Oh and I love your channel always great content!
Thank you, looking into getting into this year
I don't like the bar into my back .
Curious on your preference as far as anchor situations. Anchor wizard or micro power pole
I just found this video and I am trying to get into some kayak fishing. However- due to limited space- I am looking into an inflatable one. Any suggestions on that?
Great video. Just got my first kayak
Fish finder is helpful...if possible get yourself an inexpensive one or a pricey one ...I run the Lowrance Elite 9ti on my Native Titan 12...
I am using my gf's car to get it around which is a chevy cruze lol but I dont want to scratch up my camaro :p
I am just freaked out of touching fish I mean I got decent gloves and like pliers and stuff to remove the hooks but how can I get over this. I dont even know like where to touch certain fish etc
Velcro is my best friend on the kayak
do you have a video on what to look for in a first fishing kayak?
Of all the stuff you have I think the Georgia Bulldog hat is the most important!!! lol, HOW BOUT THEM DAWGS!! I subscribed and love the video, just bought my first fishing kayak!
I know this video is a little old but does the anchor wizard have a way to release and lose the anchor in an emergency?
My first kayak is the old town 106 powered. But still have a paddle clipped to side
Lol! But seriously thank you 👍
Just found you 30 seconds ago and all i gotta say GO DAWGS!!
Thanks man. Go DAWGS
Fluke, you forgot one other 'must have' - balance - haven't flipped my Tuna yet, but do know the day is coming, especially if I start trying to stand and fish!! Merry Christmas!!
Very helpful, i see you have a trailer, what can you recommend on this. I don’t want to car top so did you get this at same place you bought the boat
QUESTION: I am planning on getting one and have zero knowledge on one. I want one that is stable cause I’m 220lbs without any gear. I’m fishing for pike and walleye and should I get a paddle kayak or a foot peddle kayak? Thanks!
Nicely done. You covered items no one else covers...
Thanks a lot!
Looking to get my first fishing kayak thinking about the oldtown autopilot 136 for sait water offshore fishing
The one thing you didn't mention about the plano boxes......do they float? I've been looking for a good waterproof box like that, but one that floats. My keys won't do me any good if they are safe from water at the bottom of the lake! lol
I am curious about your kayak trailer. Who made it? And, where did you pick it up?
What’s a good kayak for beginners that’s not too expensive?
I literally just bought my first one lol. I appreciate the help
love the presentation great video. Great description of the net only you left out the name 😲 unless I missed it I went back several times and did not hear it please give name I would like to buy one it looks great thank you in advance and keep up the great videos 👍👍
What kind of fish finder or graphing system would you suggest?
Do I live in the only state with a rod limit
Nope, Ohio is only 2 in the water
Love the Red and Black Georgia fish grips! Go DAWGS! Where did you get those?
Don't have a kayak but great info to know for the future!
Great advice...what fish grips are those??
The Original Fish Grips. There’s a link to them in the description
How about a rudder? Most fishing kayaks don't come with them and they are needed under most conditions.
I don't own a fishing yak, kinda noob, only modified my boat to make it work, but what does a rudder do? Assuming a rudder goes for a non-pedal system
@@timvandoren2432 fishing kayaks are wider, slower and you usually sit up high. This causes issues with your ability to track in anything resembling a straight line especially with the addition of wind and currents. A rudder will help you get where you want to go. I have a 3 Waters BF 105. The rear end has a mind of its own without a rudder.
Great helpful tips. Thanks for sharing. Also Go Dawgs!!!!🤙🏻
Good advise and gear thanks for your time 💪🏻💪🏻😁👍🏻
How long did it take you to get used to fishing out of your kayak? I've only been out on mine 4 times so far and every time I go I think of something that I need. Lol
