I still run 7 for 2 games That don't support Linux. Speaking of Linux, have you heard about it? I'm going to assume that you're a running with a low end pc. If that's the case, I would reccomned Linux Mint. It looks very identical to Windows 7 and would run better on any pc. If you are worried about Microsoft spying on you, that issue is fixed with Linux, since it open-source. And all software it up to date, I would recommend giving it a try.

Applying patches in memory like that seems horribly inefficient. Since the memory is wiped when the PC is shut down, won't those patches have to be reapplied on every reboot?

Yeah, I'd rather just run some third party tools to lighten a Windows 10 install or use a forked ISO of it like GhostSpectre. Band-aid patches being done in memory, instead of editing Windows files like Microsoft does, would leave you with vulnerabilities during boot and shutdown. Virus makers are gonna latch on to that.

I think 0patch inserts itself into the end of the part of Windows that loads executables into RAM. It's relatively efficient since the patches are fairly small. I see the main disadvantage as the fact that the patches may not be tested as thoroughly as Microsoft tests its patches.
