I Don't Want to be Lonely Tonight - James Taylor -- piano version

- This James Taylor song is one of my favorites. It fits so well in a jazz idiom, I wanted to record it. Johnny Mathis's version on his album 'Me and Mrs. Jones' is my other favorite version of this tune. I played to a metronome set at 64 bpm and then added the bass afterwards.
I am using a Trillian sampled bass for this. I use a Roland Octa-Capture mic preamp with an Apex ribbon mic (modified by Mike Joly) on the bass strings and a couple of B&K omni's just outside the case. Sorry I didn't get a good overhead view of the hands. I'll work on that. Thank you so much for taking the time to listen. I hope you find something of value in it.
I stand by my contention that you are not human for 2 reasons : (1) that piano must have been moved a dozen times in the past two years (2) God will never unfairly bestow this much talent to one man.
Great job, non-earthling !
Great stuff. Love the jazz treatment. I can almost imagine Marian MacPartland playing this on her show Piano Jazz. Cheers from Tokyo.
Wonderful!
Nice and mellow.
wow!! just beautiful
Probably the best pianist/arranger on here. You're a cool bloke for sharing
very pleasant to listen
Nice job bud, Thank You for all that you give to us.
A pleasure as always!
This is awesome..it seems like I am in a 5 star hotel lounge just relaxing and listening to a great music. Please...Please ... look forward to watch your tutorial for this song if you have the time .. Once again...thanks so much for playing this song...
A favorite, and your rendition give the perfect piano solo jazz twist. I listen to this over and over trying to simulate it myself. Thanks so much for posting.
have to comment twice! so peaceful and beautiful, makes me immediately, right now, start working on doing this song. highest kudos! thanks again!

SOOO good
Wonderful, just wonderful!
always love your videos
Wonderful. Stay blessed.
You have really captured the beautiful sound of your piano on this one Tom - wonderful recording quality! And of course the playing, as always, is outstanding.
Great sound, inspired and sensitive playing.
Another fantastic piece :) Thank you
You have a lot of talent, and I always enjoy listening to the things that you put up.
@7notemode yes you MUST! it's Nils Landgren (not Landren) Baltica 2003 with "Pat Metheny and Friends". If you have any trouble finding it, I'll send it to you! Thanks again for your GORGEOUS recording and post here! You really hit the groove here!
Wonderful piano sound and playing - thanks a lot!
Keep swingin´
Bruno
Bravissimo ... Belle réalisation et toucher pianistique remarquable !!!!
Very nice, really enjoyed listening to this!
@bemaniac2 I've played piano most of my life. Learning jazz is about finding a way to take pleasure in the process. That's encouraging! :-)
so nice , man , i like ithis ! GL !
beautiful touch and syncopation.
Delicious!
simply awesome:)
very beautiful!!!
@PianoWorks3, An acoustic piano is such a personal thing. My advice to anyone who wants to buy one would be to play as many as you can before you make a decision. I've played some Yamaha uprights that were great but there's nothing like the sound and feel of a baby grand for me, but you have to find one that inspires you to play.
Your bass player is a killer! ;-) This piece is one of my favourite performances by you. Respect!
Plamen.
nice playing , nicely done. I'm a little more sold on that Octa Capture now too.
Wonderful
You are marvellous.
Nice! That sampled bass sounds really good.
There is always something of great value in your playing: beauty. -Klav
Nice and that ribbon mic really works well with the piano.
Thanks!
Thank you.
Wow, you are so very good. I wish I could study with you. Nice job!

@vocalchords88 Thanks for noticing. I just had it tuned and the hammers resurfaced (I wear them out!). My piano tech tours w/Paul McCartney and has worked with most of the names in the classical/jazz world. I'm fortunate he lives nearby.
Man this sounds amazing. Keep up the great work. I'm thinking about getting the Roland Oct.
Thanks!
3rd (final) comment - props for mentioning Johnny Mathis, but have you heard this by Nils Landren ? INDELIBLE.
i hear you AND in the very back of my mind i hear bill evans and scott lafaro at the vanguard and cash registers and glasses and distant conversation!
@jazz2511 I was really pleased with the sound. Now I have to remember how I did it! :-) Thanks Doug. I appreciate it.
@Lot2learn Thanks Roger.
ah! piano! more beautiful than Nord!
@tongatz28 Haha. 1) don't get it. 2) don't claim it but many thanks!
@predoje Thx. Equipment listed in the description.
@wadecottingham ha! Thanks!
@cop39out Check out the description section.
@wadecottingham I'll look it up.
@klavier1us Thanks Klav
How long have you been playing? Did u struggle with jazz when u first started, especially improvising! this is a loaded question I want encouragement lol!
+1 to everyone else's comments but I will add a big bravo to whoever tuned your piano. Do you tune it yourself?
What software are you using? I'd love to get such a rich sound. Ever think of doing a tutorial of just your setup? Thanks, I've been listening to your wonderful playing on u tube for a long time.
Mark
Great,but I've some to expect nothing else when you post.
Cecil
Great performance, I wonder what to take to play jazz?
what double bass sound software are you using?
are you playing augmented 8 in ur left hand!?
Would you be so kind as to share your recording equipment/technique with those of us who aspire to achieve such great sound?
