I use FF plugins, but I'm addicted to cytomic the glue for the 2bus and usually the drum buss. I found out though that a lot of times on the drum bus if I combine cytomic with the "open sounding buss" setting and Pro C with the "Deep field" setting it seems to work well

So many compressors on the market that's crazy. Love how every comp will sounds so different. I personally like on the 2bus the SPL Iron, Shadow Hill, SSL x-comp, Vertigo VSC2 (wish so much I could have a hardware one) and Elysia xpressor
Back when I was working in a "big" studio mixing 12 hours a day on the 9000J...>>> I was at my assistants place mixing after work "in the box". I pulled up the Waves SSL bus comp and I was able to get the snap like on the desk very close. Good call man!

I was actually testing Chandler for Console 1 whole day today lol I love it on this vintage mix you had there 😍😍😍 Never thought of some of them to be used on 2bus 🤔 might as well try it. I am however huge fan of Vertigo VSC-2. This is my go to compressor on 2bus. Absolutely brilliant! Someone from the industry recommended it to me a while ago and the first time I heard I was like damb.... 😱😍 I think Im obsessed with it 😂😅😜 but I guess we all have our favourites. Really cool video! I’ve been using it on my 2 bus almost exclusively since i got it for Console 1. Also been using the American for my drum bus. They seem to work quite well together for me.

Thank you for sharing this. The LinMB was surprising. And the API, that’s an interesting one. Really want to check that out for more than smacking. I’ve had it for so long. The MJUC I call the glove when I find the right signals for it. It smoothly wraps around whatever I put in it. Think I‘ll try as many as I can tomorrow. Have the SSL buscomp 2. Analog Obsession Specomp. It’s free. I shot it out, exactly level matched, against 30 others. Including several on this list. It won with flying colors. Punchier, thicker, more dimension and more open highs. Softube VCA gets an honorable mention, too.
what exactly do you mean by your 2 bus I just want to make sure I'm fallowing that correctly , also with all these options (i thought i had to many plugin options) how do you decide which one to use not just this type of compression but all plugins aside from your Outboard gear .
I haven't hear a Farchild emulation that actually sounds like a Farichild but, the Vari Mu I guess is the only one I'd use for mastering purposes. Mu are very specific, definitely NOT a go to for mastering, not for me
If more traditional style reggae I'd say Successor, more modern, dance hall stuff, Wes NG. If you mean plugins, you can't really go wrong with the LinMB coupled with MJUC just for color. API 2500 for more modern stuff
Lmb has been my favorite for so long now. i'm loving it after upward compression on the c6 these days! Lets not forget low and broadband eq, bit off topic but q3 can't compete with that, stereo bands or not.
Funny you asked, I made a video on 2bus compressors and I wanted to include it but this version apparently has some issues (with my system), but it's a great plugin!
It's better, usually, in mastering (which is not your master fader, that's your mix) because more transparent. I'm not a fan of mixing into a multiband compressor, but that's just me, many do it successfully. I'd prefer other multiband comps to C4 tho', Drawmer 1973 for example (Softube) or McDSP or PSP Oldtimer are all better choices depending on the style

I use the Klanghelm Vari Mu exactly as you stated, for colour, hardly any, if any needle movement Threshold (usually) between -6 and -12, Just adds a little glue and sees to fatten the low end nicely too. Between -6 and -12 I can use the threshold almost like a fatness control, above -12 and I tend to get pumping that does not fit what I do (but would be great on some 50's style rock n roll, or even a trashy old skool punk band, I make Proggy Groove metal, so it does not really fit my sound). I use the free version so you cant control the saturation, but it colours it even if you leave all controls at 0

What if i don't want my Music to be compressed. It's messing with the overall analog mastering. I prefer proper headroom control and leave the mix to go through the hardware SSL when i send the mix to trusted Master Engineering

I have tried the TG very very briefly, so take my words with a grain of salt or two. It seemed way to heavy handed to me for 2bus use, both behavior and color, and the Zener is already there almost so yeah. Zener saturation tho' is better on basically everything
The best bus compressor is Ssl Bus Compressor 2. I did a comparison between waves ssl g compressor which I use often on master and I was surprised how clean and analog Ssl bus compressor2 sounded. I bought instantly with uc1 that comes with ssl channel strip 2 I thing ssl plugins are the best sounding plugins in general.
@@WAERedthunder I think you may be confusing mastering as a process with the master fader. Master in terms of the fader is just the main one that controls all others if you will. Mastering a stereo track once mixed down is a separate process, typically done by someone other than the mix engineer on a different system. Usually this would involve bringing the track to commercial level, making any minor tonal adjustments, and if applicable making sure the tracks balance well with each other, for example in the case of an album. Hope that makes sense and helps a little bit.

2bus comps and mastering comps are very different, I made a point of not mentioning mastering comps because I hope slowly people will realize the difference
You cant get the pluin to do the same thing because you have the hardware so you are not going to invest the time. With plugins you can have the same results, but with diferent paths and methods. Never with emulations.

The C1 version is actually better than the standalone, because you can have the THD and the comp in the same instance 👍

I've been really digging the bx townhouse on my mix bus but the waves ssl has been a work house for me for years.
townhouse is too fuzzy and hairy for me - its like why do i buy fancy hardware to just fuzz it up at the master stage. Just my thooughts

Tried the Sonible compressor on two bus? Very transparent and pulls everything together sweetly.

Yeah, I find that to have plugins tied to an interface is pretty dumb, especially when the interfaces are not better than what I have and cost more

You can't compare the channel because they are modeled after two very different consoles. But yes the new SSL bus is a good plugin.

It’s another term for the master fader. Your main stereo output typically. Also called mix bus as well, i.e. MixbusTV….

Logic Pro X default compressor is imo among the best. The division into various kinds of compressors as one of the key benefits.
