As a person who always try to do everything by himself, this reality hit when I produced a docu-series months ago. I learned a lot from my team-mates and I can say it won't happen if its not because of them!
Crazy enough I was just talking about this with a friend of mine this weekend, you can't reach success without a team. Now it's time for me to find the right people, thank you for this great reminder!
Love that this channel focuses on skills like this instead of just gear. In my experience in a completely unrelated field, this is the sort of advice ("focus on what's in front of the camera, not the camera") that makes a career more than all the gear talk, as fun as it is. Thanks for all the great videos
I really needed to hear this. We just celebrated our 2 year business anniversary and I’ve been really apprehensive about the future. We’ve got some big goals, but I am just so unsure of how we could get there. Your video showed me my apprehension was the unspoken truth that I just can’t get us to our goals by myself. I need to learn to be a better collaborator with our small team and others in the future. Thank you so much for this video. Thank you so much!
Hello Mark, I cannot even begin to express my gratitude to all the high quality wisdom you have dropped here on UA-cam! I am so blessed to have stumbled upon your channel while looking to be educated on story telling for wedding film making. I love how you get right to the information and you give multiple examples while displaying your passion and character, it is truly a joy to learn from your videos! You have inspired me to try my hand at documentary style filming, and I couldn't be happier-- thanks a bunch, hoping for some blessings to come your way as you have to me!
Love these tips Mark! Your last few videos have been packed with so much great insight and information. Will definitely be implementing these tips/mindsets into my videos and creative process. Keep up the good work!
I always wanted to do things on my own and was always hesitant to get people better than me. This was eye opening. I needed to hear this. Thank you, Mark!
This is something I really have to work on. I struggle with 2 aspects mostly: I see others way better than me so I'm afraid they will not have a good time or even want to collaborate, and then I'm also afraid to lose control of my visions with more experienced people that may slowly grab the handles and make the project their own (and I realize that too late). And I know for sure that will not always be the case, it's just a shell I need to break out from. Thanks for the amazing content!
@@markbone Hahahaha, bro you are a busy man, I hope you can come back to DR, by the way, watching your videos is like having you talking in front of me. I really enjoy them.
Couldn't agree more with everything you said! One bit of advice my mentor gave me years ago was "I can teach anyone how to shoot but I can't teach someone not to be an a**hole." It's always stuck with me and I always make sure to be as pleasant, friendly and helpful as possible on set.
Mark, you have made so many very good videos. But this one, this one,; I will watch again, keep a copy of it, share it with many friends and family. This was some of the best advice I have heard in a long time, with an excellent presentation, from a really good guy. Thank you for all you offer.
Hi, I discovered you, your channel couple of days ago and watched most of your videos here and must say, I learned a lot!!! Your videos are really helpful for me nowadays, specially video about using natural light. Now I working on one video where I use that way of lighting. Thank you for your time to share your thoughts and experience. Hope one day I’ll be on same level as you are.
Some really great words in here man. It's definitely a temptation to try to go at this career all by yourself. But I certainly believe that the only way to grow is to try to grow others. Thank you for this reminder and push 💪
Maaaaan, this is really good Mark 🙏🏻, I’m now self reflecting and thinking how I can tell others my vision, I find it really hard to storyboard and articulate my ideas
Great advice about collaborating with others, especially in the field of filmmaking. I just watched your doc "No Country is an Island", I was impacted by their stories and circumstances. You did an amazing job!
I would love to hear about how you and your team do quality control. How many people review it when you let the clients see it, and what you do along the pre-production, production, and post-production process to ensure that you're hitting particular quality benchmarks along the way.
Omg, I was you ten years ago. I knew I was dyslexic and that I had both strengths and weaknesses. But my negative self confidence in my head told me lies to myself about how I was capable of making a fool of myself. So out of fear of not wanting to make a mistake in front of others. I collaborated with too limited of an amount of people and wanted to do all my own stuff. Which creates less opportunity and funds. So it is a round about bad circle one must break free from. Don’t do it! Believe in yourself and know you need others!
This is so true! I always wanted and tried to do everything myself :)) Because it's easier for me and I don't have to explain anything to anyone, but of course this is NOT possible all the time and it's really nice to have a good team and nice people around, that you can trust with your projects and work. Plus it makes it a looot easier to come up with new ideas and ways to do certain jobs.
Mark ~ this video is absolutely stellar. Sound advice and such a needed conversation, most especially in the world of YT. “Hey let’s collab” in many cases is - you’re more successful and I need your clout to carry MY channel to the next level… such a backwards and self serving approach.. love this video and it’s message. Great work man!!
I'd love to learn more about finding these people to work with. Should I reach out on social media to local people, or go to screenings, or post my reel on a local page? I think I know most of those answers, but I'd love to hear more about how you got into meeting people.
Great energy in this one! :) And the topic is spot on. Have been thinking more and more on this lately... but also taken action. Bringing people onboard to some of my projects (even though I mostly pay out of my own pocket) and it will definitely will be worth it in so many ways, in the long run!
All good tips for life really. Have played in several bands thru the years. Amazing how your own creativity can be inspired when you spend time around other's using theirs. One person in the band writes a cool song. Then others in the band are also inspired to write a cool song. Creativity feeds off creativity.
You totally got me with the overalls spill lol My business partner and I have noticed this to be the case. We both have different strengths as well as different weaknesses, so between the 2 of us, we are able to make a pretty solid team.
Hey Mark, thanks for this video. I don't know anyone around me that shares the same passion of making videos, but I continue to practice so that I can eventually have something to give back. Thank you and I'm a big fan of your channel. Cheers!
I may have missed it in one of your other vids but have you mentioned or can recommend anyone who has done a personal documentary? What is that called? Thank you so much!
Mark, thank you so much for this!! You're incredible. This information is utterly invaluable, thank you for sharing your knowledge - you're helping so many of us filmmakers on our journey. Another belter of a video 💥
Go find a tailor! Tailors are cool and can do so much more than making your suit fit better. Also fixes like adding a zipper fly aren't that expensive.
Enjoying your content. Question: While I know that it could be done, (because I can clearly see it in my mind), I’m more wondering if any other documentary has done it before… making a group of different people “the Hero” of the story, as they are all fighting for the same outcome. Thanks
This may seem weird, but can you do a video of you using storyblocks? I cannot for the life of me figure out how to put what I download from storyblocks into davinci, I asked customer support from storyblocks and they couldn't give me an answer. So would be awesome to see the whole process of using storyblocks and how you get it into Davinci and how you use it in your video! Thanks!
great video, absolute agree, having people around me with similar passion and different skill sets has been the biggest part of my career for sure, great to hear you talk on that fact that its people not products that make you better at your craft, and on that note since you were asking about what videos to make, would love to hear your thoughts on consumerism in the film and photo space about how theres always new gear to buy, seemingly pushed by every big player youtuber at the same time. i want to make a video on the topic at one point but its kinda a whole can of worms, would love to hear your thoughts mark, since i feel you bring a refreshing take about technique and ideas to teach people opposed to "buy this, buy that" sorta content. Cheers
My passion is documentary and story telling. However, I am considering starting a video production company to do other video work just to get started and pay the bills then start to tailor my work to what drives me. Does this sound like a decent path forward?
This is not a Coincident, I’ve been thinking about this for few weeks now because what I have in mind for my productions, I definitely won’t make it alone.
Hi Mark, on your channel you've promoted both Music Bed and Epidemic Sound, I'm not sure if you can really say which one you prefer, but if you had to choose one to subscribe to what would it be? ES monthly cost is cheaper, but MB may be worth the extra.
Can't wait to show you the film we've been working on now for over 2 years!
Can't wait to watch it
I’m pretty sure it’s going to look amazing Mark
Fresh topic idea: UA-cam scripwriting & the role of a script in production.
We can’t wait. Told you before, you inspired me to make a documentary. I’ve decided and currently getting ready to start filming it.

This is the single handed biggest mental hurdle i've been struggling with for years.. Thank you Mark.
