Silverado-Sierra ,Automatic Transmission Shifter Cable Replace

  • Silverado-Sierra ,Automatic Transmission Shifter Cable Replace. If you are having issues shifting in or out of park or L ,your shifter cable may be getting bad.On Silverado-Sierra trucks the automatic shifter cable comes up through the floor and is under the carpet on the drivers side.Because the drivers feet is always on the cable they seem to go bad a lot on Silverado-Sierra trucks. Tried to instal a aftermarket ,Automatic Shifter Cable on this Silverado-Sierra truck but could not get the truck to shift in to low gear. I needed to have this Silverado-Sierra going again so I used the bottom half of the original shift cable. The hardest part is getting the shifter cable through the wire retainer ,that is over the steering column near the firewall. It is not to bad of a job to do but just make sure to remember how the shifter cable is routed before removing the old one. I will use only AC Delco Automatic Shifter Cables for Silverado-Sierra trucks from now on.

    WOW!!! How AWESOME!!! I just had an issue with my 2000 Chevy Silv. 1500 not wanting to go into park, or past Neutral!!! My Shifter was loose so I fixed that problem. Put it all back together & still no Park or past Neutral!!! Then I followed the Shift Cable & under the floor grommet. ( Not far from yours!!! ) So I came inside to look up on You Tube To see if I could do this job too... Your video ( & comments) Helped me to see where/how everything gets disconnected, reconnected & Adjusted!!! Thank you!!!

    Awesome video!! Highly recommend using AC Delco replacement. If so be sure to hold both cables together while mating until spring on cable from cab is completely compressed then release only cable from transmission to lock down clip and slide collar back over. Cable is already adjusted if done this way. I don't know if aftermarket is same, but trust me use OEM as this is not a job you will want to tackle anytime soon after.

    There are two cables for your truck.
    Identical except for the length.
    One is about 7” longer.
    The front half is the same length the second half is longer. Probably why you had to use old “second half”.

    Very well done! Followed this and had very little trouble. Main problem for me was getting the tab to align with the slot at the steering column end. It kept being 180 from where it needed to be and I couldn't get my hand or any tool in to turn it. Finally removed the junction box and holder and easily put it into place. Still having an issue getting into first but all back together. The video says to lengthen to get 1st but it appears the rubber "O" ring that seals the cable is showing when I do that. I'll keep trying. Again, thanks for taking the time to put this video together! Eldon

I have a Haynes manual that shows using a pair of needle nose pliers to pull down on the center tabs to remove it. I can not get this procedure to work. Wonders if un hook cable if it goes into park . probably does . sometimes the cable gets frayed inside and will restrict movement with no out side damage . Please let us know what you find as it may help another sometime . Thanks for stopping by and commenting

      @@wtbm123 I replaced the complete cable with OEM . working good now. there was no visible damage on outside of the old cable . but I was unable to see where it snaps together in the middle of the cable . so I am thinking the upper cable was the one that was bad. maybe ill cut it open and see what happen .

    I have a 1995 gmc serria and it won't go into gear. at the steering column you can move the shifter and you can see it move underneath but no drive or reverse it won't move. so it's internals on the linkage that is the problem;? I think. what do you think it might be?
    I was driving when the problem happend I lost power on my take off. I came to a stop at light went to go through and u heard a poping noise and it would not go.

    @ 0:57 When you said they pop off sometimes, mine has just popped off. But when I try to connect them back together, it seems that I can just pull it off again.. like its missing a bushing or something to lock them together.. What is this called? I need to get my truck fixed before monday for work. I cant find any parts online that have this item

    FYI, pull the old one out and measure the full length of it first before ordering the replacement cable. They come in different lengths for standard cab through crew cab. I'm waiting on UPS to bring my second one. I broke the connector on the first one trying to make it work. It was too long🤦‍♂

    • @wtbm123
      @wtbm123  6 місяців тому

      Correct .Hope the second one goes well

    • @erichutchins2360
      @erichutchins2360 6 місяців тому

      Thanks, but the second was an ATP. I wouldn't put it in cuz it was absolute junk. I found a genuine GM in town at the GMC dealership that was a return. Finally the right one and it's in and adjusted properly. Spent a small fortune. Forth time's a charm I guess. Lesson learned is make sure your getting a cable for the Allison transmission in your Duramax. Chevy must have put their own transmissions in some the earlier diesels, not sure. Mine is an 2002 LB7. @@wtbm123

    I just need the bottom cable replaced. Do yiu know if i connect a new lower cable the the old upper cable will that work since there is a little retaining pin that holds them together? I'm trying to avoid replacing both if i don't have to. I just didnt know if i could add the new upper one later on or if its a pain to get them disconnected once they are locked together

    Can you help with AC Delco part number? 2000 Silvy 4.8 2wd ext cab.... I'm pulling up too many different parts that don't really look like a match. Plus Chevy has apparently changed the part number.... Just need someone to confirm part before I buy one. Thx. Video is helpful.

    I did this yesterday I can't get the grooves from the transmission end of my cable to feed up enough to the other (female) cable to attach that cuppler to lock it in place. Why was it so easy on this video and yet on mine I still couldn't get it to feed in deep enough to lock it in. As of now I am driving with it zip tied together to have enough tension to shift but its not actually fixed until I can get it locked in place. This problem occurred after taking it in to have my rear main seal fixed in which I know the transmission was removed and placed back in.

    I have the same exact damage on my cable and the floor pan is rusted out and there is no way to secure the cable to the floor pan.
    Wondering if I'll have to fabricate some sort of floor pan to secure the cable or will it work just going through the rust hole and hanging there loose ?

    • @wtbm123
      @wtbm123  Рік тому +1

      It would still work , just make sure it does not rub through on a sharp edge

      Hell, as usual I didn't open the box when I bought the cable and of course it was the wrong cable. I hooked it up anyway and just pull and push on the cable where it hangs out of the dash below the steering wheel to change gears.
