Hey John, You dovetail the end cap due to the pressure created from the vise on that end of the bench. The dovetail shape resists that pressure, and the joint tightens when the vice is in use (at least, as far as I understand). Hope I’ve explained this clearly.
i feel like me and john have similar stlyes. "Oh, im gunna do this part of the project all by hand..." 10 minutes later, "that band saw sure looks useful over there"
I love it when people show their mistakes and explain how they fixed it. Means your a real human. And as a long time wood worker I love seeing tip and tricks the tape for the transferring marks was a new one for me, gonna use that in the future. When I built my Roubo split top bench I put in traditional square dog holes, it is the one thing I regret about my build. Really wish I had done round dog holes as almost all modern do hole products are for round holes. Oh well ya win some ya lose some. Another great build. Thanks for doing what ya do bro.
One idea I have come to appreciate is that sometimes a good woodworker is not someone who does not make mistakes but recovers well from when a mistake is made.
Truly stunning table, build, vices, etc etc. John you could easily have done this one into 3 or 4 episodes with how and what/why and etc. REALLY great video! I'm buying that drill mate right now. I'll be gettting me a couple of those vices eventually. Thanks!
Who ever called you a smuck you doesnt know how to do wood working? One of my favorite youube carpenters right here ladies and gents. Leave the man alone and take your negative feedback to the mirror. Your doing great John, keep them videos coming.
Is it possible for you to upload a video where you go trough the steps of the clean up of your shop? I dont know why but i'm kind of interested in seeing you clean up your shop because I ask myself how long you do that :)
Hey John, I keep seeing you use the Milescraft drill kit, and went to purchase one for myself. (I don't yet have a drill press) The reviews on Amazon were not great. Lots of complaints of wobbling and lack of any sense of accuracy. Would you mind sharing a bit of your experience with it? I realize it will never replace a drill press. But for now, would it be a good way for me to get closer to 90 degrees when I need it? Thanks man! Great vid.
We're going to make it a little bit taller, since I'm a little bit taller, and we're going to make it a little bit longer since... Well... We're just going to make it longer.
that is the purdiest bench ive ever seen, the exposed gears in the vice and the black frame are beautiful. Love the traditional clamping points too. Simplicity is cool
Hey J, I like your channel I watch all the time. Great table and woodwork. You really inspire me to do woodworking too. It's great that you show your assist because everyone else don't show that(glimps) of them. Or not at all. It pisses me off. They try make it seem like they do everything by themselves? They suck!!!
Hi John, love the bench. Please don't go QUIET, if we want prim, proper and quiet we can watch Rob Cosman. Love your channel and the way you explain everything.
So john i showed my old man this video today and he was wondering what that blue paint is on the oak slab edges at the beginning of the video. My mom said that it could a cure. Why im so interested is because ive milled some pine, and i find that its just not as hard as the 2x4s from the local store. I was thinking that there is curing method that ive missed. Any advice would be great!
I like one of the opening comments, ..... "because nobody likes red oak in furniture." Agree wholeheartedly, oak is too porous and has too highly visible grain structure, looks like one of those optical illusion drawings that make eyes cross, or it starts moving when viewed. However, to each their own, just my opinion. PS: Nice bench.
I don't know why he said that. Obviously many people like it because I see shops full of nothing but oak furniture. It's also commonly seen in buildings on such things as handrails and naturally finished trim pieces.
Beautiful job, John! Looks really nice! 😃 Yeah, Andrew's great! He's vise is amazing! I only thing you need a bigger mallet. 😬 Anyway, stay safe there! 🖖😊
Yes I was also wondering. I found an article that said it gets overused as furniture and wall paneling in the US. So some (many?) woodworkers don't like to use it anymore. I guess that would make sense.
Ummmm something is off.. like really off... oh wait, John shaved his beard and is sporting a stash atm. Damn.... that vice is hella nice on the new bench.
I only hope to learn a fraction of your skills. One thing I learned with the Ryoba ( I think thats what it called) is to watch the reflection on the blade, it will give you a great level.
As a US Marine and part time woodworker I really appreciate your love for the military and woodworking. Any advice for putting a router table on the side of a table saw. I recently bought an old craftsman flex drive saw and i'm looking to put a router table on one side
I thank you for your service! The flag hangs to support hero’s like you! As far as the table saw wing, you can mount it like any router table top. Get a plate and route it in. I would buy a router table plan from someone to see how it works !
You might break about your freedom and you might also scream at the top of your lungs I respect any man who does not hide behind a curtain but you still can’t beat us out of war !😂🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦. Ps. love your videos John I’m only 16 and four the one that got me into making cutting Boards and so far I’ve made a couple really nice one and some wooden cake knives !🇨🇦
Oh I LOVE red oak! It makes me so sad that you say no one likes red oak furniture... I mean, I know you're right... I'm in the EXTREME minority :( but it still makes me sad (beautiful bench btw!)
Which side did you use up? I just flattened the top of my bench by hand and my buddy is gonna do the other side on his CNC at his shop. (I’m a lucky cheater too I guess) but I’m curious to know how the finish is on the CNC side. Since I want it to be as FLAT as possible, and this was my first time flattening with my woodriver #7 (and 6) I’m not sure it’s truly flat enough... which side of yours do u prefer?
This is a badass work bench!!! I just found your channel and I love it! I was looking up how to use epoxy resin for a table, which is how i found your channel, you have great info on that as well. Thanks for the entertainment!
Want this so bad. I was wondering if anyone would out two turbo vises in a bench and ya done did it. I've never had a traditional bench so I haven't seen the need for a leg vise vs what you have here. Looking forward to seeing how this works for ya!👍
ok. I've been watching a lot of your videos. Your editor does a fantastic job of keeping the videos fun and entertaining. You have a very nice and clean shop for what yall do. Hopefully I can save money and ask you to do a project for me. I'm disabled and have issues with lifting even a little amount of weight. Please keep them coming...You and your team do a great job! thank you!
I highly recommend the channel "worththeeffort". This guy shows you in debt how to saw properly, how to use a chisel, all about grains and mainly everything you need to know!!! go chekc him out! And I don't get any benefit of it...
What a “Speed Bore Bitch”? Is that what he said? I played it over and over and that’s what it sounded like? LOL! Thx John 😎👍 Oh it’s a Speed Bore Bit!! Got it!
There is no such thing as a “good person” when we are judged by God’s standards, the 10 commandments, every single one of us has broken at least one. If you’ve ever told a lie, ever stolen anything, ever looked at a woman with lust (committing adultery in your heart), or used the Lord’s name in vain then you are guilty of breaking His law. It doesn’t matter how minor you think it is to break God’s law, it is a big deal to Him because He is a perfect God and He is Just so to remain Just, He must punish sins. On judgement day if we rely on us being a good person, we would all be guilty because All of us have sinned and don’t deserve to go to heaven. This means that due to our sins we are condemned to Hell. The good news is there is a way out of this punishment. God sent His son Jesus to die on the cross and take up all of our sins. It’s like if you were in court for committing a crime and someone else comes and pays your fines so that you can legally be set free. All you have to do is believe in Jesus and believe that he died and rose again for your sins and you have to put your trust in Him rather than your own good deeds. Romans 10:9 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
Why would red oak be bad for furniture? Red oak is what we usually have here in Europe and especially up north in Sweden where I live. I already have 3 or 4 oak logs that I need to cut up and intended to use for furniture. MIght have enough to make a workbench though since I do have a furniture fabrication place nearby that does occasionally order some Jarah I was planning to do mine in that since it is really heavy and stiff and would make an amazingly beautiful workbench. I just have to wait until ha have used up his current supply that's unfortunately already cut up in smaller pieces and he needs to order some more.
I'm British, I also love the videos and the yelling..... but then I have eight kids five of whom still live at home, and compared to them (even on a good day) its like you're whispering...its also possible however that I've just developed selective deafness when it comes to yelling ;)
Taking an alternate attempt/guess at the end cap question (as opposed to the popular warping theory in the comments): doesn’t strike me that something like a vice that’s going to have bare all that vertical force should be screwed into endgrain? I mean lots of tops are successfully made without end caps, and you can alternate the grain in the component boards, etc. Like I said, though, definitely a guess on my part.
I know it's 6 months later but I'm dying to find that nick offerman painting (1:35) somewhere... I've spent several hours looking for it and another hour watching your videos to find the one (this one) with this moment so I could leave this comment. Can you tell me where you got it?
Killer bench John. Unfortunately it doesn't look right in your shop. I will email you address where you can ship it to dispose it.
wait that's what i did
I hope that by "dispose" you meant "give to someone where it would look right."
Michael Bujaki nonono hes gonna burn the bitch. its that awesome of a bench. it cant stay in the world the world isnt ready yet
@@michaelbujaki2462 Surely that wasn't the joke.
@@michaelbujaki2462 I hope you realise what he’s actually saying right??
If (when) I win the lottery, I'm gonna have a shop like this. I won't be able to do HALF the crazy shit John does, but I'll have the shop, dammit.
I’ll be happy with his old bench.
You should look at the shop tour for Fleets Wood Shop. Craziest most well thought out wood shop on UA-cam.
@@MustPassTruck You weren't kidding! I'm gonna need a bigger lottery...
The clamp section alone - that was impressive

Oh man if only Nick Offerman would collab with you!! That would be "Book a day off work" worthy!
Agreed

Awesome build man, thanks for showing off the vises and dogs, hope that bench serves you well for many years.

Nobody likes red oak in furniture. So instead I'll make a massive bench.

Which is a piece of shop furniture
The caps help keep the table from cupping because of the grain orientation
zander chiasson That’s true if you have face grain oriented upwards but not so much for edge grain.
Finally a cool channel!!! Amazing stuff dude. Your character makes my day👏
