I’ve watched a few videos about how long development took to construct the Grand Egyptian Museum and it’s a feat it’s with us today. Also an immersive four-part special with Joanna Lumley about the origins of the Nile, traveling all the way to where the river starts. There are so many amazing nuances to Egypt and I didn’t even know about Dendera and what a hidden gem it is. Beautiful video.
@@ManWhoLovesTheMary Yes, the GEM is a whole incredible story in itself. We really couldn’t do it justice and trying to convey the sheer size and magnificence of it was impossible. And being so near to the pyramids too makes it an absolute MUST visit. Incredible! 😍
Fabulous video ! Every few days, my wife asks me “Anything from Rich and Helen ?” We both know it will be worth watching if there is. This one was no exception. Beautifully photographed and narrated, we enjoyed every minute !
What an absolute lovely trip. Always wanted to do Egypt and a Nile cruise. Had a chance many years ago - it was a choice of that or another destination and we chose the other. And it’s never come up again.
You have really outdone yourself with this video, Rich, just amazing. I had never really had an interest in doing the Nile, but, now I absolutely must go with Viking. Thanks so much for sharing.
Well done guys! This is your best vlog ever. The videography was nigh professional. You've definitely cemented a trip to Egypt and the Nile at the top of my travel bucket list 👍
What A incredible video and experience, may be one of your best videos to date Incredible to see how far this channel has come and developed of the years. Just that little bit jealous
We are just back from the Viking Nile cruise on the Sobek. It was a remarkable trip. Viking offers a well designed itinerary with excellent service both on and off the ship. The ship is well designed and as we passed some of the other river ships, the Sobek stood out from them. Viking has secured their own dock space in most ports allowing them to avoid double docking. They have also added a visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum to the itinerary. One note, the hotel Viking uses in Cairo for this cruise is the Sofitel. Jim
Fabulous Jim! Thank you so much for your 'mini review'! We can't lie when we say that these ships are phenomenal compared to others on the Nile. Viking really have hit a home run on this river. Good to know about the 'double docking' assurances too. thank you again! :D
Thank you so much! We seem to be in a small bunch of those that like to stay positive and enjoy every minute. We certainly don't like to moan if we can avoid it. :)
Thank you for watching. For detail on the included excursions, I would refer to Viking's website because they can be prone to little adjustments every now and then. Most of the main things are standard though. :)
I recommend the Jordan extension to Petra and the Dead Sea to anyone looking at this Viking cruise. I went on it with my mum and it was wonderful not having all the usual crowds at Petra, it is normally 7000 people per day and was down to 700 a day when we were there in October 2024 due to the Gaza war. Obviously things have changed again with Syria, but that's some distance away and shouldn't affect a stable country like Jordan.
You didn't get to Aswan, that's such a shame it was a real highlight for me on small boats through the nature reserve and cataract. We were on MS Antares which is Viking's oldest Nile ship in October 2024 and we saw Viking Sobek and Viking Hathor in Luxor still being made ready.
It was only a shortened cruise but the actual full length one goes to Aswan. We did that last time we were here with afternoon tea at the Old Cataract. A fabulous day! :D
Hello Helen and Rich. I was going to ask if you went inside the pyramids, or were they off limits ?? I wonder how many days and nights it is going to take to see ALL of the GEM ?? One probably needs a real pep talk and strategy to plan that excursion when it finally opens. I've seen videos of the backstage Tut restoration areas. It is quite amazing at just how meticulous the restoration team is in making sure everything is just perfect. I cannot begin the fathom the time it took to decorate all those tombs/temples across Egypt. And how they managed to decorate the ceilings of all those areas. I think you and Helen have Cruised / River shipped all the major "Bucket List" destinations now ?? Egypt is just amazing.
Hi Jeremy! Thank you for watching. :D There was ticketed access to the Great Pyramid but unfortunately we queued for ages without realising we needed a ticket lol! Yes, with the GEM only partially open, we can only imagine how huge it will be when it houses everything! It's an incredible building and it's not surprising it's been years in development!
That special Luxor dinner, was that only that one time? Or is this something anyone on Viking ship could do as maybe and excursion? That hot air balloon ride magnificent!!
Great video. May I ask you a few questions regarding the package offered by Viking, I'm assuming the city tours and accommodation were arranged by them? When we went with A&K 25 years ago the things that disappointed us most were the tourist trap attractions that we were led to like the Papyrus Museum, carpet-making lessons, etc which were aimed at selling stuff to us. Did Viking have these or did they sneak them in as well?
Thanks for watching! The Cairo section of the voyage is always included, but best to check which hotel is there ususal prefered one because they do change every so often. Tourist traps like the papyrus shop and carpet factory are a fact of Nile cruises unfortunately. Egypt likes to selll you stuff! At least you don't have to buy and can choose not to go on those excursions. :)
There's always that element whenever you go on a Nile cruise, so you have to factor that in. Avoid eye contact or starting a conversation is the way to minimise the hassle. Believe us, they are absolute PRO's at persuasive selling techniques.
Every vlog and person I’ve talked to in person says a Nile trip is great but at some point you’re going to be tied side by side with a flotilla of other ships running their diesel engines and stomach issues are super, super common
Docking alongside other ships is a fact of life for all river cruises wherever you are in the world. You have to accept this will happen occasionally. :)
Ahhh memories of my visit to Egypt, I will never forget…spectacular! However, never have cruised down the Nile…maybe in the future? And thats the way i would love to go..Loved the video and the kitty Too THX🚢🙂
Dear Richard and Helen, we did a similar trip through Egypt incl river Nile cruise to Aswan. It was our most amazing holiday ever til now. All our best regards from Austria, Gerhard and Irmgard
I enjoy your vlogs. I saw there was raw salad bar at one of your lunch stops .... I was under the impression that a westerner should not drink the water, ice cubes, or any raw item. How did you fare and is this true? Thanks.
I think the one you were referring to was at the Mina House Hotel, which is one of the most luxurious hotels in Cairo. Eating prepared salads in a five star hotel is absolutely safe, but you're right, avoid street food sellers or anything outside the hotels or ships. It's a big risk!
Sorry about your acrophobia, as the balloon ride looked amazing. That said, I get fear of heights, but "globophobia" is a bridge too far. If you have that, seek help.
Thanks for watching! I'm not acrophobic, I'm just not fond of balloons. I'm similar with cable cars but with those I mostly have to grin and bear it! 😂

One of the best travel videos I’ve seen. Great job!

I know. Part of me is a bit regretful, the other part is totally relieved! 😅

The dinner at the Luxor temple was a special one off to celebrate the Christening of the two ships. Goodness only knows how much that must've cost! 😲
