On the two-year anniversary of Russia's launch of the "Special Military Operation" in Ukraine, I sit down for a conversation with my colleague and friend, Dr. Nicolai Petro, Professor of Political Science at the University of Rhode Island.
Topics discussed include the recent events following the Russian capture of the town of Avdiivka, on February 17, 2024; the West's apparent paradoxical position of declaring unwavering support for Ukraine amid dwindling international aid; the changing attitudes in US political positions for Ukraine in light of conflicts in Gaza; the repercussions of the death of Alexy Navalny; and the enduring political culture of Russophobia in the West.

31:39 - Putin's perception of the West as untrustworthy and the United States as an "Empire of Lies", as well as Putin's remarks to Tucker Carlson in the interview
49:11 - Where does Russia "fit"? Europe? Asia? Both? Neither? Is Russia leaving Europe or is Russia trying to provide an alternative identity for Europe?
53:33 - The death of Alexy Navalny

01:06:24 - Petro's comments on Navalny

As soon as I heard Petro say “I don’t know enough about military planning to comment on this [fall of Avdiivka]”, I knew it was going to be a well-grounded intellectual conversation worth watching. An honest discourse free from hyperbole and false bravado. Thank you both for your insights!
Great discussion and thank you for all the translations Professor Rossi you have given me the link to essential Russian primary sources
Many thanks Michael and Dr. Petro, you spoke on the duran and were amazing.
24:50 Putin said this in an interview. they asked him what do you think of trump? he said, I have been through 3 US presidents and they all have amazing ideas, the ideas don't get implemented because people don't understand how strong the American Beureaucracy is. when the people with the dark suits arrive and explain to him how things are really done his ideas will not come to fruition.
Thank you so much for this
Great discussion 👍
Thank you Professor Rossi for your restraint in moderating the discussion and allowing Nicolai Petro to speak at length in sharing his very insightful perspective and understanding.
I wish petro's audio was a little better, but thank you for your work on this channel mr rossi, its very invaluable! ps : there was a recent conference with mr putin post tucker , where an italian lady asked questions... do u know what event was this, do you plan on make it available here too? Thanks again! salute.
I would argue that Tucker's interview did convey some new information. Specifically, Tucker asked Putin if he was content with the lands he currently controlled. Putin answered that denazification is still a war aim. While Putin protested Zelensky's ban on negotiations, he made it clear that he will continue to prosecute this war until his war aim of denazification is achieved. What that actually means is hard to understand.
Great discussion!
Love the real New York accent. Dr. Rossi and Dr. Mearscheimer both have it...with slight differences. Guess there is something about the environment that is conducive to clear thinking.
Hello
why cannot we be friends? - that's the key question, a trillion dollar question. and the answer is the trillion dollars in the pockets of US military industry.
...as is russophobia of course. it's been cultivated for 500 years in the West.
Ukraine has lost and has no chance of victory what ever.
I’m really interested to hear how others interpret the history lesson during the Putin/tucker interview. Was Putin making a plain old historical territorial claim? Why would he focus on this while speaking to a western audience, offering validation to his critics claims of Putin’s imperial conquest and therefore ‘Hitler must be stopped at all cost’? Putin in this interview was almost dismissive of nato in Ukraine. I was very puzzled by his approach… especially since there are many in the west that believe Russia has valid security concerns, or are open to the argument, but are not accepting of war for the sake of historical claims.
Let your guest speak, Sir.
"Special Military Operation?" Let's all drink the kool-aid now and then whatever happens, we shall see. ROFL
Are you calling it "SMO" because you prefer that term or to cater to your audience? Thanks for the discussion and many translations!
Because its not technically a war? SMO is much more limited in operational terms than war.
😂, if the Russian Army had warred on the very former ukraine, it would have been over a month after they rolled across that old Soviet frontier with about a million troops. It's a SMO. Change your "news" sources, Booster.
He calls it so-called SMO at one point here. Hardly a term an apologist would use.
navaly part is horrible
What a fascinating discussion. Why is it that our world leaders have a distorted, cloudy idea if diplomacy and respect for other lands. You don't have to agree. Yet, you must sit down and discuss.
It will never be so. So long as I'm alive. I'll never be witness to it.
Thank you both for your enlightening discussion of our world today. 🙏
