    My favourite thing about forest is that it has a feature that doesn't let me open other apps. So it pretty much (along with do not disturb) completely mitigates the problem of getting distracted by your phone. I use this with a chrome extension on my laptop that stops me from opening distracting websites, and I'm pretty much isolated with what I need to get done. It's kinda crazy how much entertainment can distract you nowadays..

    Habitica also has other features besides the to-do lists. Dailies (which are habits you do regularly) punishes you by taking away HP if you don't do them. I think its biggest strength is in joining parties, where you defeat bosses together. It increases accountability because this time, if you don't do your dailies, you also damage your partymates' HP. Also, the more you accomplish, the more damage you do to the enemy. Habitica also has a social component in parties and guilds where, as you said, you can get to interact with like-minded people.
    But you're totally right - I don't really care or root for my character, so the gamification isn't quite established well. It also takes a bit of a learning curve.

      On top of that, after leveling up one of the pets in the game, I expected it to transform into something epic, but it just disappeared. Now, I'd have to re-hatch an egg IF I get it again, just to go through that same process. Habitica DEFINITELY doesn't know what it's doing with the gamification aspect. I cared more about that pet than my own character, but I don't find pixalized games appealing in the first place.

      Habitica isn't without its flaws but you're right he missed many of the important features. Adding to the social components and damage you mentioned; the coins you receive you can set up to 'spend' on *real-world* rewards such as a cheat night on your diet or a new pair of shoes, happy hour with friends -- or whatever. Ranking Habitica two points lower than google calendar as a habit-building app is an absolute joke.

      @@KevinMcDaid81ye and apart from social its been around for 10 years with almost no changes...i wish it could have some graphical updates...pixel games are already kinda niche in gaming, let along those who trynna be productive..they are highly unlikely the type of people who are into pixel RPGs(except programmers) . I felt a tiny bit of mis targetting when they did market research. ( also all kinds of mounts, are all good and cute but do no damage in combat? and scrolls are all the old quests coming back over and over. ) I dont know the party just died out at one point and thats when its game over, i dont have the will to open it

    i've used habitica for a bit, and i did care about my character and the quests, but i found myself often ticking off tasks i haven't done yet, and then NOT doing them. i didn't lie on purpose, i just... overestimated my willpower. i guess my brain wanted that immediate reward more than the actual purpose of the game

    I really dont get how your are an alleged expert on habit building, make a video on said subject recomming apps, rating some apps 9/10, and still saying that that is not the way to go, because "tracking your habits is adding an extra habit which add an extra layer of compelexity". Do you have a magical device that can track my habits, so that I dont have to that that myself?

      Yeah I got the same feeling. I feel like the only app that really made a lot of people create a new habit, was Pokémon Go (and it's predecessor Ingress). That's the only app I would rate 9/10.

    • @thecreativemastermin
      @thecreativemastermin 3 місяці тому +3

      Exactly. If you want to be better habits, is there a better way than tracking them? It's so stupid to recommend a bunch of apps and say they all complicate things.. if they're going to complicate things, why suggest them?

    • @nickeni3050
      @nickeni3050 3 місяці тому +2

      The more confusing one is him rating habitica 3/10 (while skipping alot of habitica's other important features) and then rating an app that has no really special trait as 9/10. Like really?

      @@nickeni3050I'm late to this but I've been using Habtica for over half a year and it's great. Very motivating and it has genuinely changed my behaviors. I don't know how he can rate it a 3/10

    5/10 Google calendar -does not create new habits
    3/10 Habitica -gaming no character connection
    9/10 Fabulous -focus positive behavior
    9/10 Focus Plant -Focus on avoiding negative behavior
    8/10 Charity Miles -Physical activity
    4/10 Sweatcoin -Physical activity
    4/10 Habit Rabbit -Track your habits (Very nice looking)
    9/10 Forest -Responds to both positive and negative

    I live for the Habit Rabbit app! I used to not do anything productive but when I started the app I was really motivated to move through levels. Eventually the tasks just became routine for me and became actual habits! I think the cuteness did it for me, idk!

    • @ramonr3921
      @ramonr3921 11 місяців тому +4

      what I don't understand is why the habit rabit app got 4/10 because of "extra layer of complexity of having to record doing the habit"... umm literally every app require checking off habits because thats how apps work so im sorry but that is not a fair rating. its actually a really great habit app and is defintley way better than 4/10

    • @nickeni3050
      @nickeni3050 3 місяці тому

      @@ramonr3921most of his ratings didn't seem fair to me either. While the video makes it seem like it's expert advice, it sounds more like his personal preferences were doing the talking.
      Habit rabbit and habitica are two apps that have helped not just me but thousands of others due to the very features he dissed as unhelpful, yet he ranked them poorly. What annoyed me more is how he missed several featuers in habitica, so it feels like he gave a quick glance and dropped a shallow review

    Late commenter here.... What about someone with ADHD? I could use one of those app, but i feel that by being the first without an idea of what a good habit is, I'll need someone else to help me setting my goals. Also, I need a real stimulation to get my habits to continue, and by being an app i don't really care about it to put real effort on it..

      Hi, timmo and habitica are the two best apps for Nerodivergent people. If u find u need to customise it more, try bullet journalling and making it all from scratch on paper.

    What’s the best one to help us track habits that we want to perform daily?
    Particularly with Siri or shortcut integration.

    I'm looking for an app for my ADHD husband. For my husband, I'd like to have something that pops up when he's been on his phone for a bit, and acts as a reminder like :Hey buddy can you take out the trash instead on endlessly doom scrolling?? I'd also like to have larger projects that he needs to schedule. I'd like to be a barrier for him so he can't use his phone without committing to picking a time to do these things. Then reminders that pop up. Hey buddy, you're fixing the fence on Saturday. Do you need supplies?? It needs to be something I can admin since he isn't fully on board with upping his productivity. I just need to reduce my invisible load of keeping all the tasks in my mind and I'd like to stop feeling like a nag. Is there something like this??

      It's the kitchen sink of habit trackers.
      It wants to be a life coach, your best friend, a guru, a habit tracker, a source of inspiration, a day planner.
      AAAARGH. Just shut up already and let me add a Habit!!!!!!
      Really, really overdone app. It's like they're trying to justify the price with a zillion unneeded features.
