I was there, it happened a few meters before the tribune I was seated in. At first didn’t really grab what had happened. I took many many pictures. Still with a photo roll in that time....

2 factors prevented a worst scenario: That corner make the cars almost stop and it was raining so the cars were not going very fast

@@FormulaJuan75 I said nothing about preventing the crash in the first place. I named two factors that may explain why it wasn't worst... You have accidents from other years, however, on this same corner on dry asphalt so yes, this could have happened anyway. A chicane after a low speed corner with no runoff area on the right is a bit asking for it...

Georgie Boy I was no fan of Schumacher when racing, I thought he was an arrogant cheating bastard. However I was saddened when he had his accident and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone. Sadly I don’t think we will ever see Schumacher again

Shumacher's actually at fault, but hey that didn't stop him from wanting to punch DC's lights out :P I think Shumacher just assumed that if he crashed the other persons fault because they should have foreseen the future and got out of the way :D
It was actually more Coulthard's fault. He slowed down on the racing line and Michael had zero visibility and so crashed

After the first corner: Mika Hakkinen, Jacques Villeneuve, Michael Schumacher, Alexander Wurz, David Coulthard and Damon Hill has passed safe.
Coulthard maybe had slipped and hit the leftwall, after that his car was sliding to the other side of the track until hitting the other side wall.
Meanwhile, Irvine slowed down to not hit Coulthard, and then the confusion begun:
Herbert strikes Irvine, keeps driving and then spins;
Fisichella hits Irvine;
Salo hits Fisichella;
Verstappen hits Salo;
Diniz hits Verstappen;
Trulli hits Diniz;
Panis hits Trulli;
Alesi hits Panis;
Barrichello hits Alesi;
Takagi hits Alesi;
And after that Rosset hits Barrichello.
Summing up, 13 cars crashed:
1-David Coulthard, Mclaren
2-Johnny Herbert, Sauber
3-Eddie Irvine, Ferrari
4-Giancarlo Fisichella, Benneton
5-Mika Salo, Arrows
6-Jos Verstappen, Stewart

While Coulthard was sliding until he hit the right wall, Hill passes nearly touching the Mclaren car.
Ralf Schumacher passed the border to avoid being hit (keep looking into Coulthard's car and maybe you'll find the Jordan).
Esteban Tuero was the last car to pass after Nakano, he made it to avoid everybody.

Wow great prophesy that is exactly what happened in the rainy Singapore race Sunday 09-17-2017. Max Verstappen went between Kimi R. and Sebastian Vettel crashing both on the first lap. Which also caused both Max and Kimi to plow into Fernando Alonso going around the corner. it's Looking more like Lewis Hamilton's going to win the championship. RIP to Sebastian Vettel's car :(

Bullshit Stephen. Nobody was even injured in any serious way. F1 cars are super safe for at least 2 decades already now. Only very rarely do drivers get seriously injured or killed, and only in freak accidents.
All the safety measures of the last years are completely overdone and kill the excitement of the sport.

Looks to me like an optical illusion because of the camera angle and the tire was not that close
This brings back memories! This was the year I became an F1 fan. I still remember as a young boy taping this race and watching that crash over and over. Each time watching a different car just to see how it all happened. The drama between Schumi and Coulthard. That Fisichella-Nakano crash. And the fairy tale 1-2 for Jordan with one of my old faves Alesi rounding out the podium. You couldn't have scripted a more dramatic and memorable race.

Eddie Jordan must have been the happiest man in F1 of all time, when they finally scored first victory for the team, and it was 1-2 as well!
so envious of my uncle who was in that grandstand on the right when this legendary F1 Spa crash happened. could probably pick him out of the crowd with a close enough view. awesome track Spa & always my favourite in F1, Project Cars etc. fantastic times for F1 during the Mika Hakkinen, David Coulthard years.

Murray Walkers commentary throughout this race was priceless, it's miraculous how no driver's, stewards or spectators where seriously injured or worse in that pile up at the start what with so much bodywork and tyres flying about everywhere!

I was 18 when that happened. My dad and I (huge F1 back then) were watching it, as Spa-Francorchamps was always one of out favourite tracks. The carnage was completely MENTAL that day! When the race ended, my dad said something like, "Holy S--T....what the hell did we just watch?!?!"

WaifuRacer V8 vs turbo hybrid is not the fucking problem though. I watch on TV and idgaf about engine noise. The racing was fantastic 20 years ago. The cars were so different from each other but still were competitive because they weren’t clinically conceived. They need to infuse some aspects of spec racing. F1 is supposed to be all about innovation, but all the real exciting innovation has already happened. Now it’s just diminishing returns, little gains for big dollars and boring nerd fests. Make it cheaper for new manufactures to enter (Toyota, BMW, Ford) and include some spec aspects and it will be very interesting.

When you weren't born at these awesome times, but first watched Formula 1 when Vettel was dominating with Red Bull :'(
unlucky you =(.....for me the 1998 season was the first full season I watched, before that I hadnt paid much attention...for me as a Finn it was the perfect time to start following the sport as Mika Hakkinen n finally had a car that was able to fight for (and win) the championship. And I have been following the sport ever since.
Althought Red Bull might have dominated, I still think some of the years were amazing. Just think of 2010 or 2012, where the final race still was a decider in who'd take the championship. Alonso came very close those two years. Not just that, there were many, many more random drivers who won races. Think of Kimi, or Rosberg back when Mercedes were OP, hell, Maldonado even won a race back in 2012. The real boring years are now. Absolute snoozefest.
Harry Verolme yea, these times when Hamilton, Alonso and Vettel could fight for the wins were great, but compared to the Snna's years, and with today's domination of Mercedes, it's pretty boring to watch most of the time

If this crash happened with today's absence of spare cars and the obligation to return to the pitlane by yourself, we'd had an 8-9 car restart after that, because after Hill, only Ralf Schumacher and Esteban Tuero made it undamaged. Jos Verstappen managed to bring his car home, but sustained massive damage.
Those were the days. I remember watching this race live in utter disbelief. I was a Häkkinen fan, so i kinda enjoyed the Schumacher incident.
Hakkinen owed a lot to Coulthard at 1998... ;)
