- Will Calhoun, the widely acclaimed drummer from the band Living Colour, graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston where he received a Bachelors degree in Music Production and engineering. He was voted the #1 progressive drummer three times by Rolling Stone Magazine's critics poll, as well as Best New Drummer by Modern Drummer in 1988.
In addition to his vast work with Living Colour, Will has recorded and/or toured with diverse artists including B.B. King, Mick Jagger, Jaco Pastorious, Harry Belafonte, Pharoah Sanders, Jack Dejohnette, Paul Simon, and many more.

Will Calhoun is no secret to drummers - maybe non musicians were not that familiar with him. But I can remember being a metal kid in the 80's and then hearing Living Colour, and instantly hearing the difference between what Will was playing, and what metal drummers were playing. Legendary backbeat/pocket player, killer time, killer chops with creative and fresh ideas; inspiring - that's how I have always thought of Will Calhoun.
Big Will is a genius and a legend, man. Great snag gettin' him in there. Definitely one of your coolest Drumeo lessons. :)

This is true genius of drumming. Will Calhoun is a beautiful mixture of the cerebral with the visceral, similar to that of Billy Cobham. If you never heard him play live, please do so. Calhoun understands the art of drum tuning with virtuousic playing.
This one was one of my favourites so far. And this that he said "Drumming is a very liquid art form, when you can flow between time and space" really struck me as the best definition of drumming that someone could ever come up.
What I really enjoyed about this is that he has the background of playing with traditional instruments. He decided to learn playing with loops, DJ's and modern music rather than hating on it (as many of us have including myself). He's used it to improve himself as a musician and drummer with modern and traditional instruments!

This man is a legend. My all time favourite band drummer beside Mike Bordin. Every drummer should watch this lesson. Will's drumming work with Living Colour is fantastic.

I had the pleasure of attending a drum clinic here in Tucson, a couple years back. Wil's intensity could be felt through the whole building. Phenomenal artist to say the least. I have seen Wil with Living Colour as well. Wil inspires me to be a better drummer. Looking forward to his return to Drumeo! Excellent guest drummer folks!

Layers of musicality... There arent drummers of this heavy caliber that can play chops musically with rhythms quite like Will C. . Amazing.

Living Colour is one of the best kept secrets in the music world...you don't know about them or Will Calhoun because the music industry and the powers that be didn't want you to know. They didn't get a fair shake, especially when their 3rd album Stain was released, which is still hailed by most fans as their best. Radio stopped playing them and Sony wouldn't support them. If you haven't seen them live, you are in for a shock...you will not believe what you see and hear. Their new album Shade will be out this fall.

No doubt!!! When I bought their 1st album, "Vivid" in 1988, I was 14 or 15 and was mainly into bands like Rush, Yes, Metallica, and Led Zeppelin. I was on the brink of a major musical awakening when I bought, "Vivid." I just didn't know it.
As a kid I had always liked Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, and Prince. But as adolescence came along, I also wanted to rock. So I put in the first Living Colour album and, because I was a drummer and had been for about 4 years by then, my ears were immediately tuned into what Will Calhoun was doing. I noticed that he liked to play his hihat on the upbeat with his left hand when he was playing his ride cymbal with his right hand. He did that a lot on songs like, "Middle Man," "Funny Vibe," and in the intro to "Desperate People." So I immediately started doing that and it's still something that I do today, almost 30 years later.
After Living Colour, I got turned onto other black rock bands like Fishbone, Bad Brains, Urban Dance Squad, 24-7 Spyz, and others. It's sad that those bands never achieved the level of fame that some other bands with half their talent did.
Didn't mean to write such a long comment. And I didn't even say anything about any of their other albums. Their EP, "Biscuits," is a killer collection of covers and live songs. Calhoun's drumming on their version of "Burning of the Midnight Lamp" is like nothing else. Then there's the song, "Money Talks." There's a section of that song where Will and Vernon just go off the map for a couple of minutes. Aw man, I gotta go hear that after I finish watching this video.

I hate having two comments posted back to back, but I just had to say something about what Will says at about the 37:00 mark. So funny. When giving advice to young drummers, he says, "Practice is mandatory. Piss off your parents while you're young. Piss off your neighbors, piss off everybody, because when you get to be 25 or 30 years old, you'll be glad you did." Well Mr. Calhoun, I checked that one off my list right around the time Living Colour's first album came out, if not sooner. It just so happened that I got my first drum set in the summer of '87. My apologies to the Lewis family.

The correct spelling is Sleishman ; the Sleishman total suspension system. I Namasta ve playing my stage one kit since the 80,s, still sounds fantastic .Don actually invented the twin pedal system, an amazing drummer & a very generous human being .

As awesome as creating something Intressting and playing fast chops may be, will never thinks as a drummer, everything he does is from a musicians point of view, he tries to be so musician and adapt to the song, it's just glorious. Will is far more than an awesome drummer, a top shelf musician~! I gigged through those 11 years age 15 to 26 . No great drummer really, but I made a living because I could listen, keep time, and control dynamics.

What a breath of fresh air. I am so very happy that today I listened to Cult of Personality for the first time in a while. Will Calhoun is a magician. Thank you for the time you spent teaching about Frequency and Rhythms. I will absolutely start to use my left hand for normal tasks on a daily basis now.

This is my second time watching this clip, I enjoyed it the first time watching it , but this time it seems a bit more interesting, I am listening to what he's talking about, the different dynamics of playing along with other instrumentalist, how not to get ahead of everyone while maintaining your own space in the music, using different syncopation and other timely features of drumming, I was not aware of how knowledgeable he is playing drums, apparently he is not your soul hip-hop funky, let's give the drummer some...it's so refreshing to see and hear someone play the drums and can explain exactly what's going on. Thank you Mr. Calhoun...peace.

Wow, Thanks so much for sharing this lesson video with Will. It is great to see him talking bout Frequency and Space in regards to drumming and sound... advanced concepts that we as drummers aren't usually taught to be aware of. I also love how he has progressed and kept up with technology in regards to his own musical expression. As a side note, I was a student at Berklee College back in the early 80"s and had the pleasure of being in a couple of group lessons/workshops with him while he was there (pre-Living Color). I have to say he was exceptional even back then, and it's a pleasure to see that he's still sharing his creativity and talents!

And for those who don't know he played a Pearl CZX back when that was the flagship kit. I still want one . Probably of one of the best kits ever made to this day. If you know then u know.

It's the very first time I see someone calling Mr Gavin Harrison "the guy from Porcupine Tree". Anyway, TheBeatSmith meant the first model of the WaveDrum. I don't know which DeJohette has, but I'm sure Harrison has the latest one. Quick added-after-edition note: the Korg "Global" WaveDrum (the latest model I was talking about) is at 339$ on amazon.com. I've tried it once in a drumstore in France, and, I must say it's worth it. Much more interesting than just Roland or Yamaha pads - the only reason for which I didn't get it is the Oriental China Trash that was in the store the same day. 😜

I saw Will do a drum peformance for Drumtek here in Melbourne,Australia,apparently he was pissed off because he wanted more time for his slot,he came on and fired shot gun shits from his snare,the angry made the performance better,I was blown away.
