A popular and successful artist And society portraitist in the late-19th and early-20th centuries, Henry Scott Tuke is best known for his impressionistic paintings of young men, boats, and/or the sea.
Unlike colleagues and friends John Singer Sargent and Oscar Wilde, Tuke was largely forgotten until (mostly gay) art collectors and art historians “rediscovered” him in the 1970s.
In recent years, Henry Scott Tuke has returned to popularity and his work is sought after by art collectors (including Elton John) and art museums around the world.

“While twenty-first century eyes are more likely to view them with suspicion, as covertly sexual, the success and popularity of these works makes it clear that the bathing boy or youth was a completely legitimate genre in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and many such paintings adorned the walls of exhibitions, galleries and homes not only in Britain but through Europe and beyond. For most artists and viewers this motif was about health, vigour and charm, a depiction of a childhood far from the evils and social problems of modern city life. Thus, the subject was innocent of any sexual interest; indeed, these works would have been seen as the very antithesis of the erotic.”

Who can make a fuss over the beauty and grace of the human form? Tuke presented it with dignity and grace. His sea and boat paintings were exceptional as well.

I have loved Tuke’s paintings for the last 50 years. I think my overall favourite is August Blue. It is good to see a younger generation appreciating the beauty of his art.
A dear art history professor pulled me aside after class one day and shared his work with me. She loaned me a book and encouraged me to read up on him. I'm forever grateful. And yet...I STILL learn more about him regularly. Just added a print of an etching he did of his older brother to our shop. It stopped me in my tracks. Etchings? I had no idea.
It's incredible that all those fabulous paintings were forgotten.
Not sure they were all forgotten, but they do seem to have fallen out of favor for awhile. With 1300+ works of this quality, it was only a matter or time before the collectors would find em again. History is like a clock pendulum...eventually it will be TIME. :-)
Where have these paintings been all this time and are now showing up?
@@ankhpom9296 My understanding is he did 1300ish paintings in his lifetime. Many are in museums. Many more in private collections. Like everything, styles and mores change and art can get put in storage until they change back. Luckily, Tuke's work caught on again in the early 1970s and has been regaining its rightful place every since. I live near the ocean on the U.S. East Coast and I love the feel his painting evoke by the way he casts the body, the ocean and light.
That's lovely. Curious if you noticed any difference as your "views" would be bookends in a sense. Him looking towards the US and you looking towards the UK.

Never have I seen so may beautifully painted ... vessels! By the way, if the vessel holds other boats it is a "ship"; "boats" do not carry other boats!

Hey Clint. As you know from my other missves I'm not into high art but I know what I like when I see it and this archive ticks a lot of boxes. So much of his seascapes and ships paintings are so etheral looking and look almost water coloured(english spelling 🤟) quality light and delicate not thick oil painting. I think he would have captured an excellent Poldark in those Cornish coves and boats 😎 Cheers DougT 🇫🇴
Glad you enjoyed Tuke. Seems like a right good guy. Talented too. And some interesting family ties to the Royal Family (way back when). He seemed to live his life and do his art without fuss or muss.

I'd only heard of Tuke in passing, an excellent eye and technique. I gather Elton John collected his work.
Magnificent.
In the nineteenth century and onwards, the modern artist had to find a way to present the naked body without recourse to the academic sterile nude. Tuke succeeded. If he had painted the female nude outdoors, he would have continued the practice of soft porn traditional to the presentation of the female body. Degas, Lautrec, and Bonnnard found ways to do it by looking at domestic nudity. Tuke found it by referring to naked male swimming typical of his time. It was a practice that took place publically even in cosmopolitan London parks.
It's amazing what context can do to understanding art...and history. Ain't it? Thanks for sharing and watching!

Most of the music from recent videos is from Epidemic Sound, a music library I subscribe. It makes these montages possible in my opinion.

Spectacular video montage. I knew little about Tuke prior to watching this, and once again you have educated me. I love his paintings. I've looked at the world market, and it seems non-existent. I see no originals for sale anywhere, but I'll keep looking. I've always loved Steve Walker's paintings--very different style, but I like them a lot. A few years ago, I started collecting. Again, not a lot on the market. And after he died so young, the prices increased phenomenally. Anyway, thank you for my reintroduction to Tuke.

As for Tuke, with 1300+ known works, I'm sure a few will come up for sale eventually, but I've heard Elton John has QUITE A FEW...so who knows what they'll be fetching when they do come up at auction. In the meantime, I've added a few prints to our shops. For those of us...on a budget. ;-p
@@CollidePress I think Steve Walker is awesome. I found a gallery in England with at least one of Tuke's paintings--one that I like. I've written to them. We'll see what they say. I'm not sure how they sell--fixed price or auction.

He mostly painted outdoors (and finished indoors), so I kinda doubt it. But for a formal photo, sure...he was from a posh family, so he was accustomed to dressing up for his closeup. :-)

At the time, pictures of nude bathing represented freedom.
Freedom and health. Forget what condition Tuke’s father suffered from, but sunbathing was part of his treatment if memory serves. So the roots were personal.

Sometimes the faces ate distinct and clear. Other times, they are barely filled in.

One word: Impressionistic. Don't think he considered himself an Impressionist, but the style definitely influenced him, like most artists of his day.
His work is nice, but still unable to show frontal men/boy nudity, not a sexual object, but as part of men/boys physical frames. I will repeat it, it is nice work....
He did show some, but I can't show on UA-cam for fear of getting another community guidelines strike. Even though they say artistic nudity is allowed, they mostly don't mean it. So...Tuke's work is shown in the best, most advertiser-friendly way possible. :-)
What has gay got to do with it, he loved the time of youth nothing wrong with that, since when has beauty had anything to do with sex.has the world gone mad?
There's nothing wrong with it, but he was gay and asshats have been "outraged" by us since at least the beginning of snake oil salesmen...I mean preachers. Yes, the world is completely mad. And mostly full of xit. Tuke's work is beautifull and innocent. But folks will make all kinds of claims, so I come prepared with facts: He was an artist who was also gay. He painted nudes and was never accused of anything. He and his work were highly regarded then, now, and hopefully forever. The end. :-)
You introduced me to so many Tuke paintings but, alas, the first one I ever knew was not there. Why no "Ruby, Gold and Malachite"? Apart from that a beautiful presentation. For those who don't know the painting, here it is
