  • When it rains, it pours, and that goes double for winter in Lloydminster!
Snow removal is about neighbours helping neighbours. It takes a big team to clear the roads for safe commuting, and with over 250 kilometres of roadways to plow, or the same distance as driving to Edmonton, there’s a lot of work to be done! So, how does it work?
Firstly, let’s talk about snow clearing vs. removal. Snow clearing means pushing accumulated snow and ice off of the roads or to the side for safer driving. We don’t start snow clearing until there’s a minimum of five centimetres on the road. Snow removal means removing all snow from residential streets. This process begins when it has been assessed a full residential snow removal is required, and consideration is given to the packed depth, or after freezing and thawing causes uneven roads.
For both, our first priority is Lloydminster’s busiest arterial roadways. Next are Collector Roadways-or, the connections between arterial and residential roads.
The order of residential snow removal alternates each year to ensure fairness, and removal operations follow the curbside collection zones. To maintain regular curbside collection, snow removal crews will not be in your neighbourhood during your curbside collection day.
During the removal process, windrows may be left overnight on residential streets and will be removed the following day. The best efforts are made to not leave any windrows over the weekend to allow more navigation room for drivers.
Live or work in the downtown business district? If 10-15 centimetres accumulate on our downtown streets, crews come in overnight to remove the snow.
We know how frustrating snowy roads can be. That’s why we are grateful for motorists maintaining 8 metres of distance between themselves and snow-clearing machinery. This helps keep crews safe, minimizes equipment damage that can delay snow clearing, and ultimately, keeps other motorists and pedestrians safe.
We’re in this together. Remember to keep your sidewalks clear, so we can all get around and enjoy the winter wonderland. Don’t forget, the Community Standards Bylaw prohibits snow from private properties from being displaced onto our roadways.
