when you were setting up the dial indicator, the exact word is tangent, like a line that's intersecting the circle in only one place. As if you were holding a straight edge on top of the gear and it's perpendicular to a radius line from outside to center. Perpendicular was close enough for me though! I saw a video about the chevy axles from the 50s which had fine thread things that you screwed in and out to move the ring gear instead of shims, then there were caps to pinch them down once in place. I don't remember if it had that for the pinion also or not. Probably cost too much to machine all that.
